Expect Significant Renewal Delays
Global Entry membership lasts five years before it must be renewed, and it always expires on your birthday that fifth year. However, Global Entry renewals are temporarily closed to new applications and renewals due to coronavirus. In mid-2018, many members began experiencing excessive delays associated with renewals, with cards taking more than two months to arrive, or no email reminders or updates being sent.
In fiscal year 2019, CBP enrolled more than 1.1 million new members into one of the four Trusted Traveler programs: Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST, according to its annual travel and trade report. More than 9.2 million members enjoyed the benefits of expedited processing as a Trusted Traveler in FY2019, with more than 6.7 million being Global Entry members.
TPGs director of travel content Summer Hull waited about a year for renewal. In the meantime, her PreCheck expired even though there was supposed to be a year-long grace period . Delays can sometimes be avoided by doing one key thing: Applying for renewal well before your Global Entry expires.

How Do You Know If Its Time For Global Entry Renewal
All United States Trusted Traveler program memberships like Global Entry & TSA PreCheck are good for five years from the date your membership is issued. And if you arent exactly sure when you received your membership in Global Entry, there are two quick and easy ways to figure this out.
First, you can check your Global Entry membership card which is issued to each Global Entry member. Your membership expiration date will be printed just below your birth date.
Thrifty Tip: This card also will also work as an alternative to Real ID for domestic flights starting in October.
You can also log in to your Trusted Traveler Program account on the Department of Homeland Security website. Once logged in, there will be a box on the dashboard that lists your program membership number, your program expiration date, and the date at which you are allowed to renew your membership.
You can start the renewal process up to a year before your Global Entry membership expires.
And an important note: If your renewal is in process, Global Entry members can continue using both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck for up to another year after the expiration date. Thats a generous grace period, and its up from the previous window of six months.
Expect The Following During Your Interview
Once youve completed your Global Entry application, the interview comes next. Depending on where you are, it may take a while to schedule an interview. CBP told Afar magazine the agency was experiencing historic increase of new applications and renewals, going back to a partial government shutdown in January 2019, then the global pandemic in March 2020. At one point, enrollments were suspended through summer 2020, but they resumed in September of last year.
When your interview day does arrive, be sure to arrive on time and bring:
- A print-out of your letter of conditional approval
- Valid passport or permanent resident card
- Evidence of residency
If things are backed up and your scheduled interview time seems like forever away, you can always try getting a walk-in interview. Many TPG readers and team members have had success showing up for an interview without an appointment. Or, consider seeking out an interview upon arrival at a participating airport .
Once at the facility, you may have to wait a bit if the CBP officers are busy. I waited about 15 to 20 minutes for my interview on a Friday morning at the Chicago enrollment center, but one former TPG editor didnt have to wait at all for her interview at a center in Los Angeles.

There is also an option to schedule a Zoom interview for renewing applicants.
New and renewing applicants who have to complete an interview may also be able to use Enrollment on Arrival. Conditionally approved Global Entry applicants can do their in-person interview when returning to the U.S. on an international flight at any of the 60 airports that participate in the program. New applicants now have more than a year from the date of their application to complete the enrollment process, including the interview.
How Long For Approval Of Renewal
The approval process could take anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks, but times can differ depending on how backed up they get. There are even reports of people getting approved in a matter of a day or two so you never really know when it comes to our government.

How To Use Global Entry
Using Global Entry is a very seamless process. Once you have gone through the application and approval process, all you will need is your Known Traveler Number. This is commonly referred to as “KTN”.
To make your Global Entry experience, it is best practice to add your KTN to all of your frequent flyer programs. Once you do this, your ticket will prepopulate with your TSA Precheck/Global Entry membership, and you can breeze through airport security. If you dont do this, you will need to manually add your KTN to each flight you purchase, or manually add it at the airport with an airline representative.
After this, your membership is ready to go. Your boarding passes will say TSA Precheck/Global Entry on it. When you approach security, show the attendant your boarding pass, and you will be on your way.
Renewing Global Entry Online
To begin the renewal process, log onto the Trusted Traveler Programs website.
When you log into this website, You will be able to see your membership details. If you are currently not eligible to renew you will not see anything allowing you to process a renewal.
However, if you are able to renew you should see a button allowing you to initiate the process.
When you renew your membership, you will be expected to input all of the same type of information that you put with your original application.
So for example you are going to need to enter things like:
- Citizenship or residency documents
- Job changes
- All countries visited in the last five years
You will also need to make your fee payment.

How To Pay For Global Entry Membership Renewal
Whether youre applying for Global Entry for the first time or renewing your membership, the application will cost $100 and your membership will be valid for five years. But if you hold the right travel rewards credit card, you dont have to pay that $100 at all.
There is a growing list of credit cards that offer up to a $100 reimbursement credit for either TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. And that benefit can be used every four years to pay for your membership. If you already have a membership, you can use your card to pay for a friend or family members application.
Our favorite option is the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. The card has a $95 annual fee, but that is completely waived for the first year of card membership. That means you can get your Global Entry membership for five years before having to commit to the card long term.
On top of that, it offers 50,000 Venture Miles after spending $3,000 in the first three months of card membership. These miles can be redeemed for up to $500 towards any travel expense.

Families Need To Enroll Kids Separately
Parents cant bring their babies or children through the Global Entry kiosks with them unless the children also are enrolled in the program. This means youll have to pay the $100 enrollment fee for each child youd like to enroll. Youll also have to schedule and attend an interview with your minor. This makes the enrollment upon arrival service extra handy.
TSA PreCheck benefits, however, do extend to children 12 years of age and younger in your family, so you can use the expedited lane together when traveling domestically. The Mobile Passport app allows you to create additional profiles for family members, and up to four people can submit a single customs declaration form. If your family doesnt leave the country often, that may suit your needs better than Global Entry.
Extra fees arent required for children who use NEXUS with their parents, or for children linked to the parents SENTRI profile.
How Does Global Entry Work
After you apply, attend an interview, and you get approved, you will be issued something known as a PASSID which is also called a Known Traveler Number. This number will be automatically attached to your passport.
When you arrive back in the US, you will be able to bypass the main immigration line and head over to a kiosk area where you can scan your passport and biometrics. After verifying your travel details and making any declarations, you will be issued a receipt and often you will show that to an immigration officer who will quickly wave you through immigration.
Its a very efficient process that takes the pain out of international travel to a large degree.

You Can Enroll Upon Arrival
If youre having trouble booking an appointment or dont live close to an enrollment center, you can enroll upon arrival at various airports within 25 U.S. states, plus Canada, Ireland, the Bahamas, Abu Dhabi , Aruba and Bermuda. Keep in mind, many of these extra arrival spots were shut down during COVID-19.
If open, this service allows you to complete your Global Entry enrollment interview as part of the immigration process when arriving at the airport after an international trip. In order to do this, plan to follow signs in the airport for the Enrollment on Arrival lanes and be sure your flight arrives during hours when interviews are being offered.
A CBP agent will complete your Global Entry interview during your admissibility inspection. If you dont see any signs for this, ask a CBP agent.
