MI was developed to help people consider changing their behaviour and increase their motivation to change . It doesnt show people how to change but motivates them to want to change.

The theory that underpins MI is the Transtheoretical Model, which is also known as the stages of change . In this model people show different levels of motivation at different stages of behaviour change. The stages are shown in the figure below:

When reviewing motivational interviewing training programs, we considered the largest and most well-known training programs in the United States. Then, we evaluated how their training programs are delivered, their accreditations, their affiliations, and their costs. We also looked for programs that offer continuing education or continuing medical education credits, because many professionals are required to earn credits on a regular basis.

Because finding the ideal training program is often based on personal preference, as well as your employer’s guidelines, it’s important that you evaluate the merits of each program against your own set of needs and requirements. This step is especially important if your employer is paying for the training or expects you to earn CE credits.

What Mi Training Involves

Motivational interviewing in brief consultations: role-play focussing on engaging

To begin your training journey in motivational interviewing, Miller and Moyers suggest that an openness to the collaborative, evocative, and client-centered âspiritâ of MI can be important to how easily you learn it. Trainees need to be willing to explore the perspective that people are experts in their lives and will typically move in a positive direction when given the right support .

Gaining competency in client-centered counseling approaches is central to MI, including accurate empathy, reflective listening, affirming, reflecting, and summarizing .

The next steps involve learning to pick up on change talk and sharpening your perception of elements of clients speech that show a willingness, need, or motivation to change. Once youâve mastered this, you can learn to reinforce and elicit change talk, while also responding in ways that reduce counter-change talk .

Rolling with resistance is another key skill youâll acquire. Rather than challenging or opposing resistance, which can actually generate more pushback, youâll learn to roll with it. This could involve affirming the clients autonomy and reflecting their resistant speech with empathy .

When a change plan is in place, the therapists next job is to help cement the clientâs commitment at the appropriate time, paying close attention to and eliciting the clientâs commitment talk .

When To Use Motivational Interviewing

MI is a useful tool when discussing health behaviours. Health behaviours are any behaviour relating to health, for example exercise, smoking, food and alcohol consumption.

The reason we are interested in health behaviours is because they can influence health for better or worse.

  • Smoking is related to lung, throat and stomach cancer, coronary heart disease , emphysema.
  • Alcohol consumption is related to liver cirrhosis, pancreatic and liver cancer, hypertension and memory deficits.

Examples of beneficial behaviours:

  • Exercise is linked to reduction in weight, increased longevity, protection against osteoporosis and improved self-confidence.
  • Reduction in weight, through diet and exercise, is linked to enhanced wellbeing and improved blood pressure, along with a reduction in CHD and diabetes risks.

Health professionals can help people by telling them about healthy food choices and motivating them to change.

Individual Study And Self

Individual study and self-training offer the most convenient method of learning how to do motivational interviewing. This method typically uses study materials, such as books, workbooks, and online reading along with training videotapes. While convenient, much of the learning process for MI happens while youre doing motivational interviewing. With self-training, it can be difficult to develop the real-world skills needed to be an effective interviewer. However, you can still obtain a motivational interviewing certificate through self-training.

Motivational Interviewing Certificate University Of Maryland School Of Social Work

    Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based treatment that can help people resolve ambivalence about change. Specifically, it is a âcollaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for changeâ .

    A core part of MI involves eliciting spoken motivation for change to help the client tap into their intrinsic motivation. MI is typically a brief intervention and can be combined with other forms of treatment .

    MI began with a model of behavioral treatment for alcohol dependency developed by William Miller . As a clinical method, motivational interviewing has the following characteristics:

    • Empathetic and person-centered practice centered around reflective listening
    • Involves paying close attention and responding to client âchange talkâ
    • Reinforces the clientâs spoken motivation for behavior change
    • Meets counter-change or âsustain talk with empathy rather than resistance

    MI has proven to be an effective intervention to resolve ambivalence around change for substance use issues and health-positive behaviors, such as HIV testing, medication compliance, and healthy eating .

    Theres more than one way to get certified in motivational interviewing. Online learning, workshops, classroom-based settings, and even self-training can all serve as training options. However, the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers recommends workshop settings that allow for hands-on skill-building as the most effective way to gain proficiency.

    What Are The Benefits Of Motivational Interviewing Training Programs

    Because this approach to treatment is evidence-based and effective, it is an important skill for you to add to your repertoire, especially if you work with people who struggle with drug use or addiction. Likewise, people in health care as well as those who work in the criminal justice system have found these training programs provide them with skills that prove useful in their day-to-day work environment.

    For instance, a review of 72 studies indicated that motivational interviewing had a significant impact in approximately three out of four of them, with an equal effect on physiological and psychological diseases.” Meanwhile, another study found that this approach to treatment is 10% to 20% more effective than no therapy and is on par with other treatment approaches designed for addictions and risky behaviors. Thus, it’s important for clinicians who work in these key areas to know how to use these treatment methods.

    • Establish rapport by being friendly, relaxed and actively listening.
    • Set agenda collaboratively, where the client can prioritise a behaviour to address.
    • Assess the importance, confidence and readiness to change.
    • Explore the importance of change further, by probing the pros and cons of the behaviour.

    Building confidence is a key aspect of motivating people and them ultimately being successful in changing their behaviour.

    Clinical Conversations Training Program

    This program offers MI as one of seven conversation topics from the Network of the National Library of Medicine. While the training program is geared towards those in a clinical setting, its intended to support training efforts around health literacy and related concepts and can be relevant in a WIC setting. The program is structured to allow trainers and training managers to embed brief trainings on conversation topics into regular meetings or training sessions, with each module under a topic designed to take about 10-15 minutes to deliver.

    Each conversation topic contains a facilitator planning guide, pre- and post-assessments, PowerPoint slides with speaker notes, printable quizzes , and sample follow up email messages to continue engagement beyond each session. The MI conversation topic includes 8 modules:
