How Many Candidates Are In The Second Interview
Reaching the second round of interviews is a big deal. It means youve made it as a serious contender for the open position. But how many candidates end up making it this far?
There is no concrete number because various factors come into play.
The first is the job itself. Different positions have distinct interview needs. Weve already covered how more demanding jobs require more scrutiny, increasing the number of candidates who go through to the interview round. But some jobs also require different types of interviews.
We wont get into the specifics here, but some companies will separate the hiring process into several stages that analyze unique facets of your employability. For example, some might dedicate an interview about your work history and skills. Then, they move on to the behavioral interview that puts your work ethic and values under a magnifying glass!
In those cases, hiring managers usually remove people from the running as they learn more. So you might start with a shortlist of ten people. But as you move through to the second interview stage, you may only remove one or two.
It all depends on the job.
Other considerations include how the company conducts interviews and how many open positions are available. For example, perhaps the company has several openings for the same role. It makes sense to interview more candidates, given the multiple positions available.

Finally, always send a thank-you note or email after the interview and then follow up with the employer if more than a week has passed without a response or feedback.
Hiring managers are busy and do forget to get back to you sometimes. Its always worth sending a follow-up.

I am job-hunting right now, and I understand that employers want to treat the recruiting process carefully to make a good hiring decision. I don’t blame them for being choosy. I have been in the business world for a long time and I know that trying to recover sunk costs will kill you. If I stayed in a broken interviewing process just because I’d already wasted hours on these people, I could easily win the battle and lose the war by landing in a horrible job.
The recruiter was shocked when I called him. “You’re a finalist for this job!” he said, as though being a finalist for a job were the greatest thing that had ever happened to me in my life. “Then presumably lots of other employers could use my abilities,” I said. Organizations that are talent attractors have determined that less is more.
They have a concise process. They move quickly. They get it right more than they get it wrong. If we get they do get it wrong, they dont take long to make the correction.
The reality is that 99 percent of your interviews should never need to go beyond three interviews. It looks like this:
- First round This is your pre-employment screening/assessments and phone interview. Perfect placement for video screening tool .
- Second round Face-to-face with hiring manager and any other key stakeholders .
- Third round Face-to-face or video phone interview. Executive sign off. Really only needed if your line executive doesnt have faith in the hiring manager.
How The Interviewing Process Has Changed
It used to be true that companies might wait until they had at least ten suitable CVs before compiling a shortlist. Once they arrived at a decision, they would progress through a three-round interviewing system to find the best candidate. The recruitment process they follow might typically look something like this:
- Telephone interview
- First face to face interview
- Second face to face interview
However, the recruitment technology available now means that candidates can apply for jobs much more quickly. Consequently, once their CV becomes available, they disappear from the market much quicker than they used to. This means that hiring managers have to progress much more quickly to interview.
While the three-round system is still widely used, hiring managers will rarely wait to find ten good candidates any more. Instead, the moment they come across a good CV, they will try to arrange a telephone interview with that individual as soon as possible.

Before scheduling interviews, speak with the hiring team at your company to determine their availability to interview candidates. You can ask for their work calendars to see what days they’re available. How Many Candidates For An Onsite Interview
After conducting phone interviews, the average hiring manager will invite 2-4 candidates for an onsite interview. However, if they only felt that one candidate from the previous round of interviews is qualified, then they will invite that one person while continuing to search for new candidates at the same time.
If they liked more than four candidates, they may invite a higher number of people to the second interview over the course of a few weeks, but theyll usually do it in phases to keep the process organized and manageable.
Example scenario: A hiring manager conducts six phone interviews and likes five people. Hes open to speaking to all five, but he feels three of them are better-qualified than the others. He may invite those three people for an onsite interview and keep the other two candidates waiting.
If those three onsite interview goes well, he may choose to just move forward with one, two, or three of those candidates into the final round of the process. However, if hes not satisfied after talking to those three people, he can reach back out to the two that were waiting.

The Request For The Unnecessary Meeting Arrives After A Month
Ive facilitated this kind of sit-down after a month went by. And the last time I did, it was because we had basically moved on from the applicant, but didnt want to reject this person outright because we did like her. That is, until the hiring manager wanted to backtrack and re-interview this person. I was a bit surprised when she accepted our invitation for another meeting, but it did tell me she really wanted the job.
That doesnt mean we didnt interview her too many times.
If this happens to you, its not a bad idea to be a bit more direct in your response. Stay professional and as friendly as possible, of course, but you deserve some answers.

But, you shouldnt be flexible to the point where youre in the sixth or seventh round of meetings. Be gentle, but dont be afraid to let someone know that enough has been enough.

27. The current unemployment rate in the US stands at 10.2%.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 1.8 million in July. To break it down using demographics, the rate stood at 9.4% for men and 10.5% for women, while it was at 19.3% for teenagers. The African-American population had the highest unemployment rate at 14.6%, while the white population had the lowest at 9.2%, with the Asian and Hispanic population somewhere in the middle with 12% and 12.9% respectively.
28. The average number of annual work weeks increased to 46.8 in 2015.
In comparison, the number of working weeks in 1980 was 43. Additionally, the number of positions that required average to above-average education, experience, and training rose from 49 million in 1980 to 83 million in 2015, or by 65%. So, in simple terms, people work more and are expected to be more qualified nowadays compared to 50 years ago.
29. Current job satisfaction statistics for American workers.
As statistics show, 49% of Americans are very satisfied with their jobs. In comparison, 3 out of 9 employees say that they are satisfied, 9% are a little dissatisfied, while 6% are dissatisfied.

How Many Interviews Are Too Many Interviews
Like most things in business, there is no magic number of interviews it depends on the organization. Nonetheless, four appears to be an important threshold for both employers and candidates to avoid interview fatigue.
Google, where candidates were formerly subjected to more than a dozen interviews, has become a trailblazer in interview efficiency.7 Googles research found that after the fourth interview, interviewers had 86% confidence in the candidate.7 Afterward, confidence rose by less than 1% with each additional interview.7 Furthermore, 94% of the time, the hiring decision remained the same whether the candidates were interviewed four times or 12 times.7
This research suggests that exceeding four interviews is likely to lead to interview fatigue. Google learned from these findings and now follows the rule of four for interviews, only passing this benchmark on rare occasions.7
When You Let It Go On Too Long
But theyre not really garbage. Theyre still the really good person you initially interviewed. You just let it go too long and discovered they have opportunities and we dont want to hire anyone with opportunities we want perfect.
This is what happens after round three of interviews in almost every organization Ive ever witnessed . It might be the biggest misconception of candidates, who feel the longer they go in the interview process, the better the chance for an offer.
Its untrue! If you dont get an offer after the third round, your percentages of getting an offer falls exponentially for every round after that!

What Is The Purpose Of Multiple Interview Rounds
There are many reasons why hiring managers conduct multiple rounds of interviews.
The obvious primary goal is to determine the best fit for the open role. A single 30-minute conversation only provides so much information. You cant explain your experience and capabilities in that short period.
Consider yourself lucky to get several interview opportunities. It gives you multiple chances to talk about your achievements and learn more details about the job and the company.
Hiring managers might also want multiple opinions. When thats the case, you may have a panel interview. Panel interviews allow multiple people to meet with you at the same time, all hearing the same information.
This saves everybody time while allowing them to hear the same information from candidates and weigh in with their opinions and thoughts.
Regardless of the reasons, its about being diligent in choosing the best candidate possible.
