How Good Does My Writing Have To Be What If My English Level Seems Low In My Writing

How To Crack Amazon Interview? | Amazon SDE Guide 2021

This isnt English class in tenth grade where you had to write an essay with a five paragraph structure and perfect syntax and grammar.

Your language doesnt have to be perfect. If your English is above average or average, you should be fine. If your English is below average, you can still get the job , but you may be asked to take a writing class once you start working there. They want to make sure your emails and reports are good enough for your colleagues to understand you.

Does this sound like Im not being strict enough? I used to be an English teacher, so I actually have pretty strong opinions about language. However, Ive also worked in corporate America enough to know that, the truth is, your language doesnt need to be absolutely perfect, including your written language.

The important thing is to use the PAR structure to keep your answer organized and clear and use the best English you can. Dont obsess about your spelling and grammar. You want to think about the question like a behavioral question. Does your answer make sense? Did you say too much? Too little? Are you actually answering the question?

Amazon Solutions Architect Assessment

After you pass the initial resume screening for a range of Solution Architect roles at AWS, youll be given the Amazon Solutions Architect online assessment. This assessment takes about 75-90 minutes to complete and is divided into five different sections:

  • Hiring Simulation with several real-life scenarios
  • Amazon Work Style Assessment
  • Technical Indicator Assessment

Whats included in the Solutions Architect online assessment?

First, youll be given a proficiency interest survey, in which youll self-rate your proficiency in four areas of technology. After that, youll work through technical modules designed to assess your knowledge against the rated proficiency you provided in the survey.

The general technical assessment focuses on system design, compute, cloud migration, and cloud design. Assessment questions are a mix of multiple choice and objective/situational questions. Note that there are no coding questions.

What Does The Compensation At Amazon Look Like With Numbers

Hereâs an example of a hypothetical offer to help you get a sense of the numbers: :

  • Year 1: $120k base + $40k Sign on Bonus + 5% RSUs = $165k
  • Year 2: $120k base + $40k Sign on Bonus + 15% RSUs = $175k
  • Year 3: $120k base + 40% RSUs = $160K
  • Year 4: $120k base + 40% RSUs = $160K

You might have noticed that in this model, total compensation is down after year 2. This is unlikely to happen in a real-case scenario because stock prices are assumed to go up over time.

âDonât worry about the stock going down. If for whatever reason it does, Amazon will make sure that your salary is fine.â Shelli reassures us. Also, keep in mind that in this example, an employee could receive a raise on their base salary over time.

Interview With Hiring Manager

SDM/TPM Interview Systems Design

This portion is either in person or via a phone call with the hiring manager, who would be your direct manager. The hiring manager is on your side. They have the biggest pain point, meaning that they really need to hire someone. Itâs in their best interest to be nice to you, and they usually are. That doesnât mean you wonât get tough questions. However, I ï¬nd that this ï¬rst meeting with the hiring manager is going to be one of the main chances where you get to ask speciï¬c questions about the role.

For this interview, you should be ready to sell yourself. Prepare fewer questions about the company culture, and more questions about what kind of goals the manager has, what projects you would work on immediately, and their expectations for the role. The hiring manager will usually be the âeasiestâ interviewer you come in contact with. Your conversation will likely be about the role itself and your career goals, along with what relevant experience you have for the job. You should use this meeting as a chance to learn as much as possible about the job. You want to ï¬gure out: What would I be doing on a daily basis and what will it be like working with this manager? Here are some good questions to ask them in the first meeting:

  • What are the three most important leadership principles for this job?
  • How do you define success for this role? What metrics are you using to measure my accomplishments?
  • What specific tools will I be using on the job?

What To Be Careful Of When It Comes To Salary Negotiation

Amazon Software Engineering Manager (SDM) Interview: Managing Performance

Given that the compensation structure has been well-developed with fairness in mind, you might be wondering if there are any negotiation tactics that could compromise how valuable you appear to the company.

The only scenario in which negotiation can be challenging is when candidates donât look at the big picture total compensation and only focus on the base salary. Sometimes, candidates â especially junior candidates â wind up comparing their base salary with what their friends are making or what companies are paying for similar roles in other companies, and this can cause them to emotionally over-negotiate their base. Shelli shares,

âWhat are your long term goals? Keep in mind that your future boss is going to see your compensation structure, and be mindful of the impression you are leaving.â

Tactics aside, thereâs one more thing to look out for: while most hiring managers and recruiters are trained to start base salaries at midpoint, that doesnât mean that all of them follow this protocol. Be sure to check that the person you are corresponding with on salary negotiation has not started your salary below midpoint.

âIf youâre working with a recruiter, then the more you discuss compensation beforehand, the better. Be on the same page. Donât wait til the end of the hiring process to have this conversation,â says Shelli.

Can You Describe Yourmost Difficult Customer And How You Were Able To Handle Their Needs

Amazon rose to greatness partially because of its commitment to customer service. It made the shopping experience better, even when something didnt go right.

If the job is even remotely customer-facing, you should be ready for this question. Dealing with a disgruntled customer isnt easy, and Amazon wants to know that youre up to the challenge.

    SAMPLE ANSWER:

In my previous role, a customer was upset that a product they ordered was put on backorder unexpectedly after they made their purchase. They needed a functional version of the item as quickly as possible, and the possibility that that wouldnt happen increased their stress levels, leaving them just shy of hostile. To resolve their issue, I began by listening to their concern, rephrasing what was being shared, and asking clarifying questions to ensure my full understanding. I then reassured them that Id work with them to find a solution. Together, we discussed alternative products that were in stock that could meet their needs. As soon as a substitute was identified, we canceled the old order and initiated the new one. I applied a free shipping upgrade to expedite delivery, ensuring it would arrive before the customers deadline. In the end, they were fully satisfied with the solution.
