Be Prepared To Ask Questions

Just as in an in-person interview, youll want to make sure you have questions for your interviewer. The good thing about video interviewing is that you can have them written down, just out of sight of the camera. Heres a few good ones to start with: What does success look like for you? and What was the best feedback you ever gave to someone on your team?

With remote work, asking questions may actually be more important, since you will not be walking through the office space and meeting the team at the end of your interview. Consider asking, How does the team work together if they are all remote? and What technology do you use to manage projects?

Tips To Prepare & Dress For Your Video Job Interview

Skype and Zoom have made it so easy to video chat over PCs and mobile devices that more employers are using video to replace some in-person interviews, especially with the pandemic.

It makes sense: From the companys point of view, a video conversation can save both time and money, very similar to a phone interview but providing a view of the candidate.

And, of course, the Coronavirus pandemic dramatically increased the use of video interviews, making video interview skills more important for job candidates.

Video interviews provide a convenient way for hiring managers to have an initial conversation with a candidate, before committing to the time and expense of tests and additional interviews.

Also, recruiters say that, as the competition for talent becomes more intense in technology centers like Boston and San Francisco, companies there are becoming more open to the idea of hiring remote workers in secondary markets. Clearly, the pandemic has increased that interest.

Video interviews are an invaluable tool for screening those candidates.

As a substitute for a usual suit, wear a white slim-fit button-down shirt and throw a navy blue vest on top. Of course, the shirt must be tucked in, and just let the vest do the job of covering it. You can roll up the sleeves if you want, just do it the right way above the elbows or above the wrists. Avoid leaving any crumples as you do so.

Check The Technical Equipment And Test The Sound

The last thing you want is to have technical difficulties when youre being interviewed so it is important to make sure that your microphone, webcam and sound settings are all in working order. Test the sound and reduce or increase the volume accordingly. You might want to call upon a friend to perform a sound test and also perhaps to help you practise to act out a role-play of the interview. When I did this, my friend noticed that I speak quite fast and so I have had a chance to work on this. Its a good idea to do a test run of the interview with someone to not only test the equipment but to gain feedback on how you present yourself. If you, like myself, speak fast when nervous then it is important to remember to speak slowly as there may be an online delay.

How To Dress For A More Casual Interview

When the workplace or the job is less formal, the dress code may be more relaxed. If you’re not sure what to wear, it’s fine to check with the person scheduling the interview. However, it’s still important not to dress sloppily. Learn more about some casual options:

  • Business Casual: You can leave the suit at home, but dont get out those jeans just yet. Business casual means no jeans, no sneakers, and no apparel that would be more appropriate for the gym or the club.
  • Startup Casual: Jeans may be OK for an interview at a startup, but make sure theyre clean and free from holes or ragged seams. Youre going for stylish, not sloppy and its still a good idea to dress up a bit more than the folks who are already working there.
  • What to Wear When There’s No Dress Code: Not sure what to wear? When theres no real dress code, keep it professional and err toward business casual.

Clothing Thats Too Big

If your interview outfit hangs off of you like a wet potato sack, that isnt going to make a great impression. When youre clothing is too big, it almost makes it seem like youre playing dress-up in your parents clothes. Thats no good.

Take the time to make sure each part of your outfit fits correctly. If a piece is too large, either have it tailored to fit or choose something else.

Background Matters A Lot

Your background is just as important as your outfit, and the two go hand-in-hand, according to Rosenfeld. Your Zoom window shows only a small frame, so everything stands out. Keep your background tidy.

Background has never been a part of personal style as it is now, said Rosenfeld. Now that youre broadcasting from the comforts of home, it is important to set up your background properly so that its a proper representation of your professionalism.

You can use the composition to your advantage and create an interesting, conversation-worthy background, as long as its not distracting.

If you play a musical instrument, why not have one out so people can see? It makes sense that you should be surrounding yourself with elements of the best of you, said Rosenfeld. Theyll see that youre an interesting, multi-faceted person.

Your background color and lighting will dictate what you should wear.

Review Your Tech Setup

Review and ensure all your technology is working before the interview. First, ensure you understand the software that is being utilised for the interview. Some video conferencing programs require you to create an account before you can use the software. Make sure you have an account and that you update your software before the interview begins. You then want to check your hardware. Test your computer or phone’s camera and audio. If you plan on wearing headphones during the interview, make sure they are compatible with the software you are using.

Right before your interview, check your internet connection and sign in to the meeting. Just like an in-person meeting, it’s a sign of professionalism to be a little early to the interview. Test your sound and video and ensure everything is in working order.

Dress Up Your Bottom Half

How to Dress for an Interview – I.T. Interview Tips #003

What Colors To Skip For Your Video Interview

Though no color is technically off-limits in an interview, these colors have more negative connotations associated with them. Choose wisely, or skip them entirely!

  • Brown: makes people think youre reliable and dependable but also old-fashioned
  • Orange: unfortunately, orange has been voted the worst color to wear in a job interview
  • Red: associated with power, energy, excitement, and courage, but also hostility and defiance
  • Yellow, Green, and Purple: youre fun

While its OK to include some color in your interview outfit, think small. For example, consider adding a splash of color to your outfit and still make a statement without overdoing it.

Alternatively, you can think soft and choose light or pastel tones. For example, if yellow is your color, and it makes you feel confident and strong, by all means, wear it. However, choose a shade of yellow that is more like soft sunrise and less neon banana

Prepare Your Outfit Well Ahead Of Time

We also recommend preparing your outfit a few days before the job interview. Try your entire outfit on well ahead of time to avoid any unpleasant surprises or changes of heart ahead of the interview.

Theres every chance your mind will be focused on what you want to talk about at the interview. Having to track down a belt, with the clock ticking, isnt conducive to attending your interview in a relaxed state.

Don’t forget to also consider the shoes and accessories you’ll wear, along with how you’ll style your hair and makeup. Aim for a complete polished and tailored appearance. It’s also a sensible idea to pick out a blazer or jacket, if you haven’t already, in case the interview environment is cold and you need another layer to keep warm.

What Is Business Casual

If your interviewer specifically states a business casual dress code, they may just be saving you the hassle of getting a suit or they may be judging your ability to fit in. You need to hit the right mark for the company. Inside info is a help here. If possible, aim to dress slightly smarter than the person interviewing you.

The key rules:

  • No suits. Its fine to wear a jacket, but it should be the light, stylish kind, paired with a non-matching skirt or trousers.
  • No jeans, trainers or t-shirts. If youd wear it to lounge around at home, its not the right look.
  • For the guys, you absolutely must wear a collared shirt. Add a light wool sweater, jacket, tie, or all of the above as you like.
  • Women, pair a nice blouse with formal trousers or a skirt. If you go with a dress, you can get away with something more flowing than youd wear to a formal interview, but avoid anything strappy.

Tip #: Dress With Comfort And Confidence In Mind

With that being said, I know a lot of people might think its ok to wear yoga pants down below, but I want to advise against that. What you wear allows you to feel a certain way, and you will definitely feel more confident, prepared, and embody the role youre going for more if you are dressed in the full ensemble, from your dress shoes all the way to your cologne. And finally, you just want to make sure that whatever youre wearing is, of course, wrinkle-free and stain-free, because small things get picked up on camera. Ladies, that means no disco-ball sparkly earrings, excessive or distracting makeup, or noisy jewelry. Nobody wants to hear your bracelets clinking during the whole interview! There wont be a desk and room in between you and the interviewer, so theyre going to be able to see and hear everything very clearly. Just make sure that you just check all of those details because you want to make sure that whatever youre bringing forth is going to be the best first impression, whatever you need to do to make sure youre properly fitted, tested out before you actually hit go live.

I just want to caveat, by the way, that I am not a fashionista by any means or any stretch of the imagination. These are just some of the tips and tools that I picked up along the way. I hope this helped, and I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming video interview!
