Find Open Record Label Internship Positions
First, determine when labels typically offer internships. Some companies look for summer interns, while others accept applications in the fall or spring. You can usually find open internships online, or you can meet with your school’s career adviser to learn about potential internships. If you’re interested in interning at a label that doesn’t have internship postings, you can call or email the HR department to see if they would consider accepting internship applications.
When reviewing internships, review the requirements for applying. Some labels might accept resumes through email, while others have a dedicated application portal. Using the right process ensures intern managers can easily accept and review your application.
What Is Expected Of Me In A Meeting
For you to be exactly who you are. Wear attire that is on brand. Turning up in sweatpants is not the best move unless your band is called The Sweatpants. Be who you are personality wise, and dress in a way that matches your brands look. Respect the others in the room and answer the questions thrown at you. If you are in a label meeting you will probably have an agent or manager with you, they will help you out and guide some of the meeting. Sure there are many a story of rappers and rockers making a ruckus in meetings and then being signed. Please dont do this if this is not absolutely truly your personality AND if you dont already have millions of followers, as it could backfire spectacularly. Plus, these crazy personality artists put it on for the world and behind closed doors, they are often well mannered. Besides Lil Pumppossibly.
Come prepared with a booklet filled with high res photos and some published articles . Take your music on USB and also have it ready to go on your laptop in case they ask to hear it. Bear in mind they will have heard your music if they granted you a meeting but its always best to be prepared. Think about having a wireless speaker on hand as laptop speakers are less than wonderful for showcasing music. Did we mention to have it ready to go? Faffing around with a speaker or searching for tracks on a laptop is poor form A& Rs are busy so when you show them you are well prepared, they take notice.
Unsigned Artist In Negotiation
An unsigned artist in negotiation for a record deal may provide demo recordings to demonstrate the value for the record label in signing them. This could be to drive a record label in making an offer they have been hesitant in making. This could also be to increase the value of the record contract in favor of the artist. Its rarely the instigator of label interest.

After sending your resume, you can follow up with the company’s HR department, which shows your interest in the internship. You can usually wait two or three days before following up, or you can check for an application deadline and reach out after that date. Check the internship posting to see if there’s a specific phone number or email that you can reach to speak with the right person quickly.

What Do Record Labels Do
Many artists assume that getting signed is the key to getting famous, but this isn’t the case. Labels exist to take care of the business side of things so an artist can focus on their music, and these days, they prefer to make deals with artists who already have an established following.
Much of what record labels do can be accomplished independently. This doesn’t mean that getting signed won’t help you, it will. Signing a deal with a record label allows you to leave the business stuff to them so you can focus on your music.
Early on in your career, things that labels normally take care of – like radio promotion or publicity efforts – will need to be handled independently until you reach a level where your music and fan base is attractive enough for labels to want to sign you.
Do They Approach Development Holistically
Developing an artist takes a multi-pronged approach, spanning traditional PR, digital marketing, distribution and live shows. As a result, youll want to see that the label has ideas about booking agents, touring schedules and PR and marketing.
While there are some labels that do a very good job of combining all under one roof, this is an exception rather than the rule.
Right from the very start, the A& R should be able to give you a good idea of the strategy they have in mind for your career, from release schedules to which booking agents they would want you to partner with and how theyll approach distributing the album and servicing it worldwide.
Youll want to see that they already have a good idea of your existing fanbase and see opportunities to grow it.
A lot of labels take a speculative approach to signing acts – theyll sign up a bunch, do a basic release with poor marketing and artist development and then use the profits from the few bands that do well organically to offset the cost of signing the rest.
Growing your career takes much more than a cookie-cutter one-size-fits-all PR push, so you should expect the label to be able to demonstrate this within your first few meetings.
Build A Fan Base And Build Momentum
Record labels today take more interest in an artist or band if theyâre already demonstrating a level of success. Play lots of shows, develop a social networking presence, put your songs on YouTube, and get your fans excited about what youâre doing. The more momentum and excitement you can build around your act, the more likely the label execs are to take notice.
Whats Their Track Record With Similarly Sized Bands
A labels roster is likely the first thing youll look into at the beginning of the relationship. While it may be exciting to see a roster full of the biggest artists in your genre, it is their smaller, less established acts that are the best indicator of what the label will do for you.
The methods used to grow a small bands career are very different to those used to market and promote big artists. Many major labels are excellent at using their resources to do large scale, globally serviced releases for bigger acts, but they dont necessarily have the time or tactics needed to build up the profiles of smaller artists.
They may be able to open the door to big booking agents and have excellent in-house PR, but building a bands profile requires a lot more than simply building a good team around them.
The best way to gauge this is by looking at the artists that signed to the label when they were a similar size to you. A healthy label will have many bands who have grown since signing and youll want your A& R to be full of stories about how they signed small bands, growing them to success.
This success doesnt necessarily mean selling truckloads of records and selling out 1000 cap venues, but you do want to see that the majority of their artists are playing good festivals, getting relevant support slots and quality coverage in outlets that appeal to their fanbase.

Understand The Music Internship Golden Rules
Send A Cover Letter!
NEVER send a resume without a cover letter that is customized and mentions why you would be the perfect intern! Its totally unprofessional.
Include the NAME, ADDRESS, COMPANY NAME, and INDIVIDUALS NAME on each cover letter, and customize each letter for that specific company. Yes, this will take longer but it will also get you results.
Note: Out of the 150 resumes I just received on my last round of hirings, only three people put my company name on the cover letter and wrote Dear Ms. Hyatt.
100% of all of these letters mentioned in the first paragraph that the candidate had excellent communication skills. If you are so excellent at communicating, how come my name was not mentioned? The letters that really annoyed me and made me never want to meet the candidate were the letters that said Dear Sir or Dear HR Dept or even more gross: Dear Hiring Committee .
Mention some things that relate directly to the company you are applying to the names of the artists, your passion about what it is they do, how you became interested in music, etc.
Do not write any of the following lines in your cover letter:
I have excellent communication skills.
I have loved music for as long as I can remember, since the day I was born.
I believe I am the perfect match for your company .
My extensive background in music Sorry to tell you this but if you are under the age of 25 you DONT have an extensive background .

Set Up Auditions With The A& r Manager Through An Agent
If you can find a good agent with contacts in the biz, that can help you get a foot in the door.
A good agent will know who would be most interested in your music and can use personal contacts to arrange auditions.
If you can find such a person who is willing to take you, thats great!
Just be wary of scams and dont sign anything before a lawyer has a look at it.

How Much Does A Record Label Pay An Artist
Getting signed to a record label is not like being hired for a job.
You are the artist and they are the record company. Each of you are companies with your own interests but have decided you can help each other. You will not be paid a wage. You wont be paid based on how hard, or how much, you work.
A typical financial relationship between a record label and an artist is based on recoupable advances.
This sounds complicated, but its actually a simple concept. The record label will make a loan to the artist they think will pay off. The amount of this loan depends on the record labels confidence the loan will be paid off . Because the record label is taking a financial risk with the loan, their incentive comes from structuring the deal so the record label will keep the majority of the profits when the artist or album are successful.
Many independent record labels with limited resources structure their deals more like partnerships with the artist and wont include advances. In this scenario, the profits will be shared equally, or nearly so. And many record labels will negotiate deals where they take little risk but still take the majority of the profit.
Getting a better deal from a record label depends on the work and success you have before you get signed.
And then having enough success as a signed artist you can renegotiate a current contract or negotiate a subsequent contract with the current or future record label.
