Does This Really Work

Yes, but dont just take it from me. There are many people who have been doing this type of preparation for years.

Take Kelly Stamerra, a senior hospital pharmaceutical sales representative, for example, who says, It started out as just a way to look and sound more credible when I was just starting out, but after a while I realized not only was it keeping me on track, but it directed the conversation. I felt so comfortable discussing the information I had put in there because I had taken the time to think about it, so I never went down a rabbit hole.

The result?

I call it my lucky presentation, Stamerra explains. Hands down I would not have gotten the jobs I did without it. As I continued to apply for promotional positions, it made me sound polished and professional and I quickly moved into specialty positions. It is my security blanket. Honestly, I would feel naked going into an interview without it!

Next, compile your best work. Make sure it pertains to the type of photography job for which you’re applying. For example, if you hope to land a portrait studio position, don’t show the interviewer your artistic travel photography. Although beautiful, it isn’t the type of work you’ll be doing for the employer. Plan to burn the images to a DVD or set up an online portfolio accessible via the Internet. While showing the slide show of images, talk about what techniques and special effects you used.

Did the pictures you took stand out in some marketing campaign, on a cover of the magazine? Or did they attract huge engagement on social media? Did you employer make a big profit with the help of your pictures? Try to refer to these things in your answer. Create Your Portfolio Based On Application Requirements

Youâll likely be applying to multiple schools, universities, or employment opportunities at once, and each of these portfolio submissions will have unique requirements.

Start by creating a document in which you lay out the requirements for each submission alongside the school or company and due dates. Once youâve done this, look through all of the requirements to identify commonalities between applications, like how many photos each submission requires.

From there, curate a selection of your work to fit the highest number of photos required, and then narrow down your selection for portfolio submissions asking for fewer examples of your work.

This way, the same main themes will be present throughout your applications, making it much easier to remember your talking points, rather than having to come up with a new angle for each individual photography portfolio for university.

Some portfolio requirements may leave the themes up to you and dictate only the technical requirements, while others may ask you to respond to a thematic prompt in your submission. While you should always respond directly to the specific prompt and follow every direction closely, you can save yourself some time and anxiety by finding a way to link the same main group of photos to different portfolio requirements.

    Pay Attention To The Details

How to Create a Career Portfolio

Have you ever submitted a project you thought you rocked, but gotten a much lower mark than expected because you forgot to read the rubric?

When submitting your photography portfolio for university, make sure to read through every single word carefully to avoid making that same potentially disastrous mistake.

Chances are that youâre applying to multiple schools or jobs at once, and each of those submissions will be looking for specific requirements in your portfolio.Make sure you understand exactly what each college, university, or job application is asking for in their portfolio submissions, including details like the format of your images and the number of images you need to submit.

Should your photography portfolio for college be a physical portfolio delivered in person, a zip file of images only, or a website portfolio? Are you expected to include an artistâs statement, a pricing guide, or any other information along with your photographs?

These details can vary greatly between applications, so make sure that youâre fully aware of the specific requirements for each portfolio submission.

We find it helpful to create checklists for each of your application requirements to use as a guide when compiling your portfolios. This way, you check off your items one at a time to ensure that youâre not missing any details.
