Something They Can Touch And Keep

When you have your best works on paper, it is easy to show the portfolio to the interviewers. What is more, you can leave them a copy for their consideration, especially if you didnt manage to show them the portfolio during the interview. On the top of that, leaving them a copy of your portfolio is a great excuse for a follow-up call.

You will call them to collect your portfolio, and, just by chance, you will use the opportunity to ask them whether they still consider hiring you. If the answer is negative, you can at least use the call to get a valuable feedback on your performance, trying to understand the reasons why they chose someone else for the job.

Why Is A Career Portfolio Important When Looking For Work

Business Portfolio & Job Interview

When someone types your name into a search bar, the displayed results are called SERP . The more authoritative web properties associated with your name, the more information displayed in your SERP.

Here is the SERP for Kris Fannin as an example:

Why does your SERP matter? Because I guarantee people will search for you while looking for work. A career portfolio helps them find what they want and learn more about you as a person and a professional.

Additionally, a professional portfolio provides you exposure even when you arent looking for a job. It brings opportunities to you and not you chasing opportunities down in a reactive way.

Choose An Online Portfolio Platform

You can create a website to showcase your online work portfolio or use a third-party site such as LinkedIn. You can upload videos, graphics, and images. You can also create an article on your LinkedIn page showcasing a specific project or work you completed for a past employer.

If you have them, be sure to include any photos of yourself working on specific academic projects or in previous internships. Perhaps you have a video of you doing a presentation or an interview on your college TV station.

If you are currently doing community service, completing an internship, or volunteering for a company, be sure to take some photos to show employers what you’re doing right now.

Be sure to include your work history and timeline, especially if you have previously worked for a prestigious or successful company. Show any of the projects that you worked on, but also any measurable results due to your involvement. If you’re a college student, it might be helpful to include what you learned or the skills achieved as a result of your work.

Make It Visually Appealing

Job Interview – Creating a Portfolio

One of the main benefits of creating a work portfolio is the ability to show visual demonstrations of your work. This is especially helpful for roles in software development, where you can show original code youve written, and UX/UI, where you can show graphic improvements you made to the user experience. Making your portfolio visually appealing is especially important for any candidate in the arts or design fields. You should organize and design your portfolio in a consistent way that displays your aesthetic, personality and work style.

For physical copies of your work portfolio, use a binder, folder or portfolio case to make the pages easy to flip through. You can use section dividers, tabs and color-coding options to make finding information as easy as possible. Protect the pages with clear page covers.

The Real Deep Dive: Nitty & Gritty

  • What challenges can you navigate?

  • What skills are you really bringing to the table?

  • How much of the design process have you been exposed to?

  • Your portfolio projects are all with a team, but how do you think as an individual?

These are the types of questions that every job interview digs into, but design portfolios rarely represent. To address these underlying questions, I have written up a list of the nitty gritty details that I have never seen visualized in a portfolio, but I feel couldnaySHOULD be visually present per portfolio project.

Save Your Files In An Accessible High

Certain files can be challenging to open on different computers, so it’s important you send your files in a universal format that’s available to users on all sorts of devices. For example, if you send your documents in a Microsoft Word format, your recipient may not be able to open them as they may not have the Word application on their computer. However, saving your document to a PDF is typically a safe choice because most users have Adobe Reader or another program that can read and open PDF files. This ensures your document’s text and structure remain correct.

It’s also important to save your files as high-quality pictures so recipients can see your work clearly. An ideal file type for detailed, high-contrast digital art is PNG as this form supports millions of colors. It also has lossless compression, meaning it maintains quality no matter how many times users open and save an image. However, to keep up with the quality, PNG files are much larger than other forms like JPG. Whatever file formats you choose, be consistent as this can keep your portfolio organized and understandable.

Our advice is to put samples of your work or case studies front and center in your portfolio along with a definitely not-touched-up-at-all photo of you.

Create a headline that gets attention , and include links to satisfied clients.

How To Format Your Professional Or Creative Portfolio

OK, now that youve got all of the right stuff in order, the last step when you create a professional portfolio, is to get the format right.

Heres how to make it easy for us to love you and sign you to a contract.

  • Make a : Put a table of contents first so we know where to skip to if we want to find the best information.
  • Make tabs for each section: We pore over hundreds of these things, so make it easy for us to flip to the section we want, please.
  • A title page with an intro is nice: We always love these. Write a short, creative intro about yourself and stick it on the title page. Itll make us laugh or intrigue us a bit.
  • Content Is Organized In An F Formation

Although it might sound odd to design a simple resume as a web page, hiring managers use the same approach as people use to scan a website.

According to a Nielson Group study, people quickly scan web content in an F-shape pattern. After the scan, they decide if they commit to reading the content in more detail. Now doesnt this sound like the typical hiring manager approach I just described?
