First, not being prepared for everything that may go down is a big no-no. Ideally, you want to have several copies of your resume ready. Also, you want to wear proper interview attire.

If there is going to be a paper application, it doesnt hurt to bring your own pen along, too. After all, theres always a chance that pens will slowly disappear throughout the day, so better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

Another one of the biggest mistakes candidates make during open interviews is showing up near the end of the allotted time window. At this point, the hiring manager or recruiters are usually exhausted. Plus, in some cases, a hiring decision may have already been made.

What Are Your Biggest Strength And Biggest Weakness

As this question has become more common, I have noticed that interviewees are usually prepared for this answer.

Im going to focus on talking about weaknesses because thats the part people usually have difficulty with.

The past answer , is to say you are a perfectionist. Even if you are, its such a commonly advised answer, that I would encourage you not to use it. Its become a textbook answer that honestly comes off as fake and a bit deceptive. It doesnt sound like your real answer. It sounds like the answer the internet told you to give.

Theres also the often-used advice to turn your weakness into a strength. That seems a bit dishonest, and I think professional honesty goes a long way. Within reason. Its usually better to state what your weakness is, and then how you deal with that weakness within a professional setting. Our students/clients need accommodations, and sometimes we do too.

Id encourage a dash of vulnerability and a hefty dollop of professionalism . For example:

  • Do you have trouble with spelling and need to use Grammarly and Spell Check to make sure your reports dont have errors? Fine.
  • Are you a new grad, and thinking your biggest weakness is that you are a bit green, but your strength is that you know you are going to need to seek out a mentor and look things up? Great!
  • Are you great at articulation therapy, but want to learn more about autism to build your skills, and are you willing to take classes to learn more? Say it.

What To Include In The Message

Why You’re Writing: Lead off the email with the reason you’re writing. You can start by saying, “Thank you for the opportunity…” or “I’m writing to confirm the interview details…”

Thank You: Be sure to thank the email’s recipient for the opportunity to interview.

Ask What You Should Bring: You should always bring several copies of your resume to your interview. However, some companies might want other documentssocial security card, portfolio of work, etc.on hand during the interview. Others might want you to send a sample of work prior to the meeting.

In your email, you can ask if there is anything that you should bring to the interview or if there is any information you can share prior to the interview.
