Remember though that its perfectly okay to take the time you need, and that its also okay to pace yourself when answering questions.
I mentioned already that I did a bunch of interviewing earlier in my career, and I can tell you that I personally had zero issues with a job candidate giving my questions a bit of thought before answering!

Youll Be More Prepared
Consultants do their homework before that first meeting, taking a deep dive into the company and the people who theyll be meeting with. Job seekers tend to be less focused on learning the ins and outs of the company a Glassdoor search is all the prep some job seekers do, being focused instead on how best to articulate their own skills, experience, and know-how. Turn that around and go in ultra-prepared. Research these areas:
- Company history, goals, and mission. Who is the CEO? Is the company private or public? Any scandale du jour to know about? Hows their stock doing?
- Company brand. Search Glassdoor and other sites, and also the current news. Have they been named a Best Place to Work? What do employees say about working there? Whats their culture?
- Current industry big-picture info, such as trends, challenges, and even buzzwords everyone is using.
- The 4-1-1 about your interviewers. Look them up on LinkedIn. Maybe you went to the same college or have other similarities in your backgrounds.
- Anything else specific to the company.
Researching beforehand doesnt mean you shouldnt ask questions about any of this in your interview. Youll just be super informed going in.

Explain Why Youre Interested In Interviewing With Them
After walking them through your resume, youll probably be asked why youre looking to make a job change, and/or why youre interested in their company in particular. This is where the research youve done pays off. You should already have two specific reasons for wanting to interview with their company.
When explaining your reason for job searching in general, I mentioned one example of how to turn a negative into a positive in Part I. Here are 2 more examples:
If your current company has no room for upward growth, say that youre looking for a job with more room for upward growth. If you dont like your coworkers, say youre hoping to find a team thats more collaborative. See the difference? Youre saying the same thing without sounding negative.
Whatever you say youre looking for, be prepared for them to ask why you cant get that in your current company. Just answer by saying that you dont think theres an opportunity to get this, and you considered this before starting to look externally. Simple and easy. That should end the line of questioning.
Don’t Make Up Phony Weaknesses
“As a person in charge of hiring, it gets old hearing that you are a perfectionist or that you volunteer for too many opportunities,” said Jesse Wright, Vice President of Recruiting and Delivery at Adecco Engineering and Technology. “Those qualities are actually strengths and do not fool the interviewer.”
“Instead, admit a technical weakness or true personal weakness that you are working to improve that is not critical to the job description,” Wright added. “It is a bonus if you can also show a way in which you’ve already grown or steps you’ve already taken to begin overcoming this weakness. For example ‘I have basic Adobe InDesign skills, but I am working to advance those skills by taking training classes.'”
