The Real Deal: Letting Go

How To Overcome Interview Anxiety With This One Tip

Yes, you guessed it right. This is my favourite technique, the one that helped me overcome my anxiety, back pain and other physical symptoms.

Let go of trying to control your anxiety and negative feelings.

Acknowledge the fear, the frustration, the anger, the hopelessness.

When you do that, you allow the negative feeling to wash away.

With practice, this can happen in seconds!

You may also call it forgiveness: You forgive yourself for not being able to control your emotions.

And when you do that, your consciousness rises. You are back home. Because you stopped fighting yourself.

When you let go, your thinking brain and your survival brain become allies. This is a signal to your nervous system that you are safe and there is no need to activate any more stress.

When you stop striving and genuinely say to yourself: I know you want this job so much and I understand why youre feeling like that. Ive been pushing you to feel something else. Ive been fighting you and wanting you to be someone else. Forgive me. Take as much time you need to process these feelings.

These words can shift the situation in an instant. They can also have the power to switch off physical pain and tension in your body in seconds.

To put it in different words, what would happen if you gave up on fixing your interview anxiety?

Its not an easy thing to ask for, especially when it comes to Type-A, ambitious and goal-oriented hardos like you and mebut it works.

Exercise The Morning Of The Interview

Setting aside some time the morning of an interview to get some exercise is a great way to clear your head and ease any jitters. Try to wake up early and go to the gym, go for a run, or, heck, even just take a walk around your neighborhood.

Getting a little exercise takes a bit more effort than simple breathing exercises, but some fresh air and a burst of energy is a great way to ease your mind and shift your focus on your upcoming interview.

Most of the nervous reactions our body undergoes when experiencing stress can be negated or at least mitigated with exercise. When you excercise, youre using up all that extra, unnecessary adrenaline and cortisol coursing through your body, and youll feel less stressed as a result.

9.Practice self-compassion. Focus on these words: Wisdom. Strength. Warmth. Nonjudgment. Repeat them to yourself while you breathe. Try not to critique yourself as you go through the process. Remember Youre Interviewing Them Too

One actionable tip that an interviewee can use is adopting the belief that the company also has to impress them, as finding the right fit in a new position is a two-way street. When the interviewee is exclusively focused on only the impression they need to make, rather than having the viewpoint of this being a potentially mutual endeavor, this can fuel anxiety because the stakes become internally higher. How Can You Overcome Interview Anxiety

Interview anxiety can seem like a huge obstacle to get over. Here are some useful, proven lessons that we can learn from Stranger Things to get over oneâs fear of interviews.

  • Accept that interview anxiety is common
  • On the unfortunate night of November 6th, 1983, Will Buyers was abducted by the Demogorgon and taken into an alternate dimension. Although he was eventually rescued and then returned to normal life, Will struggled to accept that he still had a mysterious connection with the Upside Down. Finally, he reveals his apparent flashbacks of the Upside Down to Mike.

Interviews are no different. The first thing you need to do is accept that you have interview anxiety. With so much riding on your performance, it’s not surprising youâre bound to experience anxiety about everything in the processâfrom not answering questions “perfectly,” to looking unpolished, or perhaps, your worst fear, getting rejected. Even exceptional engineers and senior employees in the tech space feel the same. With interview anxiety, itâs counterproductive to pretend to be okay.

  • Prepare yourself
  • We all know that Steve Harrington liked to be prepared for the unknown at all times. He rode with a spiked bat in his car, which he was incredibly proficient with. When the vicious Demogorgon was attacking the Byers house, Steve used his spiked bat at the junkyard where he would have been overwhelmed in an ambush by the demodogs, if not for defending himself with it.

Consider the following methods for reducing stress and anxiety:

    • Talk to a friend. You can call a friend before your interview for a distraction and encouragement.

    • Write down your thoughts. Writing down your thoughts can help you process your emotions and may even provide healing benefits. Consider keeping a journal the week leading up to your interview.

    • Listen to music. Music may improve your body’s response to stress. While you are getting ready and on your commute to the interview, consider playing music that energizes you to help you feel ready for success.

    • Laugh. Laughing can help combat anxiety. Listen to a funny podcast or watch your favorite comedian before your interview to help take some of the pressure off of yourself.

    • Relax your body. Just before the interview begins, relax your shoulders and unclench your jaw to release muscle tension.

Writing some notes to prepare you for the interview can help you overcome any negative feelings you may have. Before the interview, do things like review the job description again, familiarize yourself with the position requirements, plan your travel to the interview and remind yourself of your greatest professional accomplishments that you want to make sure to share with the hiring manager.

    Before The Interview: Be Prepared

The time between receiving an interview request and taking part in the interview can be very stressful. Anxiety may creep in as you think about what may happen, wonder how you will perform, and develop questions about the job, interviewer, and company. The easiest way to start overcoming job interview anxiety is to prepare before the interview.

Tip 1: Research the company and industry.

Get as in-depth as you can. Explore the obvious, such as what are the companys products and services? But also, learn the companys history, mission, strategic plan, and current market position. Apply this to industry research as well. What challenges is the industry facing?

As you undertake your research, take time to identify what about the company and industry interests and inspires you. What do you admire? Also, identify questions that arise.

Tip 2: Research the position you applied for.

Tip 3: Become familiar with the technology.

The interview process for remote job seekers generally consists of a combination of telephone and video interviews, as opposed to in-person interviews. In addition, remote workers will be expected to be proficient in using a wide variety of collaboration and productivity applications. In order to maintain low anxiety levels, it is important you understand and are proficient with the equipment and software applications you will need to use.

    Tip 4: Prepare yourself physically.

    Tip 5: Prepare yourself mentally.

    Reasons Why People Fear Interviews

  • Lack of preparation
  • Technical interviews are unlike any other job interview. They are specialized, rigorous processes that test your coding skills, problem-solving abilities, and personality. These interviews can get even more intimidating when you do not know what questions to expect and arenât well prepared. â

  • Fear of failure
  • A recent poll by Interview Kickstart reveals 69% of the respondents stated fear of failure as a major cause of interview anxiety. Interviews expose us to either acceptance or rejection. You either get the job or you donât. There is no middle ground. So itâs natural to be fearful of rejection.â

  • Solving time-bound questions
  • Tech companies have a reputation for conducting incredibly difficult interviews. Google is rumored to be a company that asks potential employees complicated brain teasers and other tough, complex interview questions. Additionally, one is required to solve these questions within a short time frame. The pressure to be an excellent problem solver and think quickly on your feet is nerve-wracking.

Preparing for your interview will involve a variety of simple tasks that need to get done like printing your resume, picking your outfit, and ensuring that your car has gas in it. Avoid this unnecessary pre-interview anxiety by creating a list of all these tasks and setting appropriate deadlines for yourself. Think of all this as strategizing your time so that you can get the simple things out of the way and focus on the important task of achieving a positive mindset. The last thing you want is to be flustered, hungry, or lost on interview day.

Enter Confidently And Break The Ice

Complimenting the office space is a positive way to do it. Alternatively, you could comment on the weather or your journey or how nice their office are.

    Do A Grounding Exercise

I love using a grounding technique using our 5 senses. It helps to turn off the brain from anxious unwanted thoughts and be present in the moment. First position yourself in a comfortable position, then take 3 deep breaths. After that youll start to say 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This is a very easy technique that can be practiced from anywhere and its so helpful in reducing anxiety. Edelys Diaz, LMFT
