Pass The Phone Screenings

How To Pass A Google Interview

In the phone screening rounds, a recruiter will contact you to explain a bit about the interview process and the role youre applying to. The interview lasts 30 to 60 minutes depending on the role.

  • For Technical roles, such as software engineering, if the first phone screening goes well, you should expect additional rounds. These aretechnical phone screening that involves phone coding challenges to test basic problem-solving and data structuring skills, such as DOM manipulation, or CSS. If your technical phone interview goes well you may be asked to complete a take home coding project.
  • For non-technical roles, expect behavioral, hypothetical, and case-based questions related to the role. For example, if youre a product manager candidate, you might be asked How would you improve Google Maps, or If you could implement a new feature for Gmail, what would it be?.

Explain Why Youre Interested In Interviewing With Them

After walking them through your resume, youll probably be asked why youre looking to make a job change, and/or why youre interested in their company in particular. This is where the research youve done pays off. You should already have two specific reasons for wanting to interview with their company.

When explaining your reason for job searching in general, I mentioned one example of how to turn a negative into a positive in Part I. Here are 2 more examples:

If your current company has no room for upward growth, say that youre looking for a job with more room for upward growth. If you dont like your coworkers, say youre hoping to find a team thats more collaborative. See the difference? Youre saying the same thing without sounding negative.

Whatever you say youre looking for, be prepared for them to ask why you cant get that in your current company. Just answer by saying that you dont think theres an opportunity to get this, and you considered this before starting to look externally. Simple and easy. That should end the line of questioning.

Understanding The Tech Landscape

Just drilling interview questions isnt enough everyone does that. To get ahead of the competition, you need to know the tech industry: notable trends, major companies and competitors, rapidly-growing markets, etc. This industry knowledge will help you craft better answers and stand out as a subject-matter expert.

Its much easier to propose a monetization strategy for a new app, for instance, if you know how popular apps make money one example I like to cite is how the popular stock-trading app Robinhood makes money while letting users trade stocks with zero commission.

Also, if you can chat with an interviewer about the product they work on including features, competitors, trends, and business decisions you will leave an excellent impression.

To really impress at the Google APM interviews, you must be able to talk intelligently about common technologies such as machine learning, the cloud, and big data. You also have to know Googles products, strategies, and competitors. You cant learn this by just drilling interview questions.

In short, you have to think like a techie.

While preparing for PM interviews, I needed to gain a big-picture understanding of major technologies and business strategy trends but I couldnt find any resources to do this. So I decided to make one.

Understanding Googelyness How To Pass The Googliness Interview

There is a lot of confusion about Googleyness and how it shows up during the Google interview. It really starts with Googles motto Do the right thing, formerly Dont be evil. Specifically, some concepts you will want to consider when thinking about Googliness are:

    Positive

    Energetic

    Emotional Intelligence

Lets start by focusing on the motto Do the right thing. Google strives to hire people who are honest and kind, so the biggest item/concept to focus on, is being a good person. This shows up during the interview in a couple of ways. The first item is based on interactions, not only the way you interact with the interviewers, but the way you interact with the receptionist, the person serving you a coffee or lunch in the cafe, the people you pass in the hall, etc. Make sure all of your interactions are courteous, friendly, and positive. Second is your interview answers, these answers should demonstrate how you have done the right thing throughout your career.

A critical aspect of interviewing is the use of words, lets explore a few items:

Gender All workforces are made of hes, shes, and people that identify as gender neutral or non-binary. So it is important to not constantly refer to an Engineer, Salesperson, or CEO as he. It will instantly communicate gender bias and downtick your success rate, switch it up. It shows that when you are working with others you are always considering inclusivity.

A certain dose of intellectual humility

Now, dont let that put you off. If you are qualified and have the experience for the job, apply!

The one thing you have to do, though is, nail the interview. Is it easy?

No. Does it take time and preparation?

    Yes.

There’s been unexpected interest in the course. We’ve been working to address waitlist issues by increasing the enrollment cap and changing lecture halls to bigger and bigger rooms. Many students have enrolled off the waitlist in Week 0, and as student schedules stabilize, we expect further movement off the waitlist.

That said, we are constrained by room sizes, especially during these unfortunate pandemic times. We must ask that you only attend lecture if you are currently enrolled in the class. Please see theSyllabus to learn more.

    Top 30 Google Interview Questions

Every year, Google receives about 3 million applications. Thats only a little less than the entire population of Silicon Valley, which comes in just above 3.1 million.

    Holy cow, right?

You know what makes that statistic even more intimidating only about 0.2 percent of those applicants are hired. Now, that doesnt mean you should panic. After all, 0.2 percent of 3 million is 6,000 people. Thats a ton of hiring. Plus, not every applicant is actually qualified. If you are, your odds are probably much better than that statistic shows.

Beating the odds isnt something youll do by accident. You have to be ready to nail any interview question they throw at you. If you fail to impress, youll probably get passed by.

But youre here, right? So, that means you dont want to be complacent. Youre looking for an edge, and thats a great thing. Without any further ado, come with us as we explore what it takes to stand out during your Google interview.

    Pass The Hiring Committee Reviews

    How to Pass the On

Congratulations! Youve passed the toughest on-site interview rounds. At this point, some candidates move directly to the hiring committee but some candidates go through the team-matching phase.

In the team-matching phase, youll meet prospective managers to discuss the team youd be joining and the type of work you would do. If a team wants you, theyll tell your recruiter and it will be added to your portfolio, which will then be submitted to the hiring committee.

Once that is done, your performance will be evaluated by a hiring committee, consisting of several Googlers who review a candidates performance throughout the entirety of the interview process.

In the day or two leading up to the hiring committee meeting, the reviewers read the candidates packet and make a recommendation on whether or not to hire the candidate. At the meeting the reviewers discuss their feedback and if all members agree an offer will be extended.

Think Of Two Reasons Youre Interested In The Company

Use the company research youve done to come up with a business-related reason youre excited about them. It could be a new business model, new clients, new partnership, etc.

Actual example: I recently had a phone interview with a tech company that was built as a review/info website. They recently started handling transactions instead of sending the buyers out to other websites to complete the transaction. I read this in the news and mentioned it as an exciting development and a really good business move. The interviewer was extremely impressed that I had read the news, and understood the implications. Total time spent researching: less than 3 minutes.

Along with one business reason, try to come up with a secondary reason too. Maybe community involvement. Or company culture. Almost every company has a blurb about their culture on the website. Read it and mention what you read as a secondary reason for being interested.

Youll seem extremely well-prepared and well-rounded for having two very different reasons.

    Getting Noticed By Google

Google receives more than two million resumes but hires only around 4000 employees every year so its not easy to get noticed by recruiters for interview calls. Take the referrals through some connections working in these companies or you can take the help of LinkedIn and online coding platforms to increase your chances for interview calls. Below are some points that will help you in getting the call for interviews

  • Try to make a single-page resume and include only relevant things. Make it short, precise because none of the recruiters has more than 15 seconds to scan a CV. Write down only those things you are comfortable with, do not fake anything because the interviewer can spot that easily during the interview. If you are mentioning your project then mention the complexity of your project as well. Check the link Resume Building Resources and Tips for the guidelines to prepare your CV.
  • You can participate in or which is a coding competition hosted by Google. If you reach Round 2 in Google Code Jam, you might be contacted by Google.
  • Keep your Linkedin, Github and other profiles updated, hiring managers uses these tools like LinkedIn, alumni databases, and professional associations to find out suitable candidate.

What If I Dont Get The Job

It wont be the end of the world.

Ive put the time and dedication into my studies for the goal of getting hired as a Google software engineer, but even if I fail, Ill still be armed with the skills and knowledge required to work as a software engineer at any company.

Wherever I end up, Im going in as an entry-level software engineer. Im not going in with 15 years of software engineering experience because I simply dont have it. When it comes to this stuff, Im the equivalent of a fresh CS grad.

But I have the enthusiasm of a new grad, too. This is a new world for me. Im just getting started. Im not afraid to make mistakes. I know I will. I also want to learn everything I can and be an excellent addition to any team.
