How Should I Dress

USCIS does not have formal requirements for interview attire, and what you choose to wear for the occasion certainly wont affect the outcome of your application. Just keep in mind that youll be meeting face to face with a federal officer who has plenty of discretion on the outcome of your application, so its best to err on the side of caution and think business casual.

What I Was Asked For The Civics Portion

The six questions I was asked were:

  • What ocean is on the West Coast?
  • Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?
  • Who is the current president?
  • What party is the current president from?
  • What are the two political parties in the US?
  • What did Susan B. Anthony do?
  • After we were done with the test, my interviewer and I chatted about her desire to travel to Argentina, and what my plans were to celebrate after having passed.

After The Us Citizenship Interview When And Where Will The Citizenship Ceremony Take Place

If a citizenship ceremony is available, you might be able to attend it on the same day as your U.S. citizenship interview.

If not, USCIS will mail you a notice stating where and when you have to present yourself for your ceremony. You might have to wait a few months to take the oath.

You must attend your citizenship ceremony. If you cannot attend your ceremony, you must notify USCIS by returning the form N-445 to your local USCIS office with a letter explaining why you cannot attend your ceremony. In this case, you will be mailed another notice at a later date. If you fail to appear at your ceremony more than once, you may be denied citizenship.

How to PASS US Citizenship Interview and Test

This PDF from the Minnesota Literacy Council is one I highly recommend downloading before your interview.

It is separated into questions the interviewer will ask you and possible answers you can give him or her. It covers everything from straightforward answers to ones that may differ depending on your circumstances.

Next to those questions, you will see appropriate responses, whether it is an action or a statement you should say out loud.

After all of the basic questions, the PDF contains reading and writing tests that you will need to practice.

You can certainly practice this mock interview alone, but it would probably be more beneficial to give it to a friend and have them play the role of the interviewer while you answer questions and follow commands.

USCitizenshipSupport covers the reading, writing and civics tests, as well as basic commands and how to make small talk .

They provide quizzes, flashcards and vocabulary tests where you fill in the blanks of sentences.

The Commands and Small Talk sections each contain audio recordings of the sentences so that you can also practice your listening skills. Additionally, they provide you with sample responses to small talk questions like how to talk about the weather or how to respond during a greeting.

Applicants who are exempted from the English test may decide to take the civics test in their language. Therefore, they have to inform the USCIS early enough that they would be accompanied by an interpreter.

The interpreter must translate exactly what both you and the USCIS officer are saying without adding or removing any information in your favor.

What Happens When I Pass The Us Citizenship Test

In the event that you pass the US Citizenship test but before becoming a US citizen, as an eligible naturalization applicant you must take an oath of allegiance in a public ceremony, reciting this orally in front of those present.

During the naturalization interview, you will be asked to sign the naturalization application to acknowledge your willingness and ability to take the Oath of Allegiance and to accept certain obligations of United States citizenship.

Under certain circumstances, however, an applicant may qualify for a modification or waiver of the oath, for example, because of religious beliefs the applicant is opposed to bearing arms in the armed forces.

In such cases, an officer draws a line through the designated modified portions of the oath and the applicant is not required to recite the deleted portions.

Do Your Best To Prepare For The First Interview But Don’t Panic If Your Citizenship Is Not Approved Right Away

There are many reasons why an officer might be unable to approve an application for U.S. citizenship at the first naturalization interview. For example, you might have failed pass the English or civics test, or to include a relevant document such as a copy of your divorce certificate. Or, if you are helping a disabled relative apply for citizenship by requesting a disability waiver of one or more of the naturalization tests, you might have submitted the wrong edition of the Form N-648 that applicants must use to ask for a waiver.

Whatever the reasons, failing to gain approval at the first naturalization interview is not necessarily the end of the line. Here’s what to do if either you or your relative is facing this situation.

    Preparing For The Test

Could We Pass a US Citizenship Test?

There are two main components for your U.S. citizenship test: the English and the civics components.

You will have to complete three English test components, including speaking, reading, and writing sections. The consular officer will ask you questions about your citizenship application during the speaking test to determine how well you can speak and understand English. You do not have to understand every word perfectly, and it’s okay to make mistakes. To prepare, you should review your answers on the application before your appointment.

During the reading test, the officer will give you a digital tablet. A sentence will appear, and you will have to read it aloud. The officer will ask you to read three sentences until you read one successfully. USCIS provides a list of all the vocabulary words used in the test, which you can use as study material. It would help if you tried to avoid pausing for very long periods. It’s generally okay to leave out short words or mispronounce some words. However, you canât replace a word in the sentence with another word you know. These questions and answers are supposed to determine whether you understand the sentence’s meaning.

You should start studying as early as possible to get comfortable with all the questions and answers. You can also practice English by reading children’s books, watching videos or listening to audio, and taking practice tests.

What Happens If You Fail The Citizenship Test

If you fail in your citizenship test you will be given a second chance which will usually be scheduled within 60 to 90 days of the first interview. If you fail the test for the second time, your request for naturalization will be denied.

If you are denied naturalization, you will receive a written notice in the mail. You will receive instructions on how to proceed if you want to appeal the denial.

If USCIS has made a mistake you can appeal the denial. If the reason for denial was that you failed one of the exams or dont meet basic eligibility requirements your application will not be approved.

    If Your Application Is Continued

The results notice you receive at the end of your interview will indicate next steps. Usually, this means USCIS will send you an official Request for Evidence for the missing or unclear information or documentation, and/or theyll schedule a second interview to take place between 60 and 90 days from the date of your first interview.

During this second interview, the USCIS officer will review any new documentation or clarification you submitted in response to an RFE and/or re-examine you on any portion of the test you didnt pass.

What Next After I Receive My Citizenship Certificate

Congratulations on the completion the process and your new status, but while you bask in the euphoria of your newly acquired U.S. citizenship, there are a few steps you have to take further to formalize your new status fully.

It is strongly recommended by the USCIS that you update your social security record soon after your oath taking ceremony. You should proceed to the social security Administration nearest to you to update your record. You need to update your social security record because, without that, your eligibility forbenefits due to you as a citizen will not be established.

Apart from the social security update, another thing you need to get done soon after your oath ceremony is the application for a U.S. passport. Without the passport, you will not be able to travel abroad. So, it is always advised that you apply for and possess your U.S. passport before you plan your next travel abroad after your new status.

Having acquired your citizenship, update your social security records, and in possession of your U.S. passport, you can exercise all the rights as a U.S. citizen.
