What Happens If I Fail The Written Citizenship Test

- all in-person citizenship tests
- Were now inviting some applicants to take the citizenship test online.
- If you cant or dont want to do the online test, you may wait until in-person tests resume .
If you do not pass the written test, but you meet the other criteria for citizenship, we will schedule you for a second test. This second test will usually take place 4-8 weeks after your first test, but the delay may be longer. If you are not available to take the test on that date, you must let us know.
If you do not pass the second test, we will send you a notice telling you to appear for a hearing with a citizenship officer. During this hearing, the citizenship officer may assess whether you meet all the requirements for citizenship. During an oral interview, the citizenship officer may:
- test your knowledge of Canada and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship
- ask questions about your residency in Canada and/or
- assess if you have adequate knowledge of English or French.
If you are asked to attend an interview, but applied for citizenship with your family by sending your applications in the same envelope, your application will be processed separately from your family’s unless you want them to be processed together.

Where Does The Interview Take Place
Your appointment notice will indicate which USCIS field office you must go to for your interview. The ZIP code you provided in the Current Physical Address section of your Form N-400 determines each applicants USCIS field office .
IMPORTANT: Every time you move to a new address, you must notify USCIS within 10 days of relocating by submitting Form AR-11 or completing a change of address form online. Updating your address helps to ensure that you wont miss important notices from USCIS, including your appointment letter.
Preparing For The Test
There are two main components for your U.S. citizenship test: the English and the civics components.
You will have to complete three English test components, including speaking, reading, and writing sections. The consular officer will ask you questions about your citizenship application during the speaking test to determine how well you can speak and understand English. You do not have to understand every word perfectly, and it’s okay to make mistakes. To prepare, you should review your answers on the application before your appointment.
During the reading test, the officer will give you a digital tablet. A sentence will appear, and you will have to read it aloud. The officer will ask you to read three sentences until you read one successfully. USCIS provides a list of all the vocabulary words used in the test, which you can use as study material. It would help if you tried to avoid pausing for very long periods. It’s generally okay to leave out short words or mispronounce some words. However, you canât replace a word in the sentence with another word you know. These questions and answers are supposed to determine whether you understand the sentence’s meaning.
You should start studying as early as possible to get comfortable with all the questions and answers. You can also practice English by reading children’s books, watching videos or listening to audio, and taking practice tests.

What Happens If You Fail The Citizenship Test
If you fail in your citizenship test you will be given a second chance which will usually be scheduled within 60 to 90 days of the first interview. If you fail the test for the second time, your request for naturalization will be denied.
If you are denied naturalization, you will receive a written notice in the mail. You will receive instructions on how to proceed if you want to appeal the denial.
If USCIS has made a mistake you can appeal the denial. If the reason for denial was that you failed one of the exams or dont meet basic eligibility requirements your application will not be approved.
If Your Application Is Continued
The results notice you receive at the end of your interview will indicate next steps. Usually, this means USCIS will send you an official Request for Evidence for the missing or unclear information or documentation, and/or theyll schedule a second interview to take place between 60 and 90 days from the date of your first interview.
During this second interview, the USCIS officer will review any new documentation or clarification you submitted in response to an RFE and/or re-examine you on any portion of the test you didnt pass.
