How To Record A Double

How to record a phone interview for a podcast (without using a phone)

If you have a guest with a little technical know-how, you can pull off the “double-ender” and get high-quality audio no matter where in the world your guest is.

A double-ender is when both the interviewer and the interviewee record their audio onto their computer or phone. Afterward, each track is sent to the host for editing.

To pull this off, you and your guest need a Mac or PC, a microphone, and a program to record your audio file, like Audacity or GarageBand. The best part of recording this way is you can have unlimited guests. Once the interview is over, just have each guest send you their tracks so you can edit them all together.

Benefit #: Easier Transcription

Using a call recorder can help to create an accurate transcription. How so? Instead of you having to write down every single word and then sending your handwritten notes to a transcription company where a person would have to read your writing and even guess at certain phrases, a call recorder captures all audio as accurately as possible. A call recorder also allows the transcriptionist to re-listen to certain parts of the interview if needed. Having a recorded interview means that transcriptions can be at least 99% accurate , which means your name wont be tarnished by quoting something that might not be correct should you choose to not use a recording app.

Job Interviews Are Business Conversations

In a recruiting context, this is typically not a big deal candidates are usually briefed that a call or video chat may be recorded, and typically consent with no flare-ups. As were currently living through the audio revolution and 2020 is arguably the Year of Zoom, we generally know that conversations and interviews are being recorded. Still, however, we need to think about it differently than we have been.

Key Points To Consider When Using Voice Recorder Apps

There are local legislative, ethical and privacy requirements to obtain consent before recording conversations with an app.

It is always important to ask permission from your expert prior to recording the conversation.

But, what do you do if an expert is reluctant to proceed?

Usually, this occurs if they are unclear why they are being recorded. I have only had one instance where an expert hesitated to consent.

With further probing, she didnt realise it was solely to ensure accuracy and the recording would be discarded after the article was written.

If you take the time to find out possible reasons for concern, it can help to continue with recording the interview.

I find it is useful to still take my own notes while recording the interview.

Typed or handwritten notes are an important backup to your recording and also allow you to note useful quotes during the interview.

Phone Interview Mishap #: Speaking Too Fast

While this phone interview mishap pertains mostly to interviewees, interviewers can also learn a thing or two from this section.

We mentioned earlier that interviews can be nerve-racking, and sometimes interviewees will speak too fast, too soft, or too loud. While there can definitely be worse things to happen in an interview, your tone and speaking speed can cause confusion to the interviewer as they might not know what youre trying to say, especially if youre talking too soft or fast. Speaking too loudly can be a bit off-putting and can even cause tension to the person interviewing.

How can you help to lessen this mishap? You can have a practice interview with a friend whos able to provide constructive criticism and you can even try to meditate or do a simple yoga exercise before your interview.

For interviewers, dont be afraid to ask your candidate to repeat his/her answers for clarity. You can even be encouraging in your response and questions which will help the interviewer to calm down. While interviews can be a formal process, if you play it cool, and let your interviewee know that this call is more of a get to know each other conversation that can also help to calm nerves.

    Ask For The Appropriate Individual

If a receptionist does answer your call, ask for the appropriate individual after you introduce yourself. For example, ask for the interviewer using their first and last name. If the interviewer answers your call, use this step to ensure you are speaking with the correct individual. Here are two examples for each case:

Example:“Hello, I’m Gemma Rutherford, and I’m calling for a scheduled interview for the accounts payable clerical position. May I speak with Jackie Renshaw, please?”

Example:“Hi, this is Gemma Rutherford, and I’m calling for our scheduled phone interview today. Am I speaking with Jackie Renshaw?”

Chit Chat With The Interviewee To Test The System

    Youll want to verify:

    • They can hear you
    • Audio and video look good
    • Internet connection is stable

Advanced tip: Once a 2nd attendee is in the meeting, you have two viewing options, and the recording will be whatever you select:

Gallery view : Its nice to see both people, but it wont fit perfectly in a 16:9 aspect ratio when you publish. Youll get a black box above and below in the output.

Default output resolution is: 1280 x 720, which is large enough for HD!

Speaker view . Its nice to have a full view of the speaker. But you can only see the speaker and the process is automated on who shows . The system does a really good job, but its not perfect. One potential issue with this view is that it sucks up more bandwidth, so the default output resolution is 640 x 720 unless you enable HD .

My advice: Its personal preference. For my video interviews, I mostly used the gallery view and didnt worry about the black boxes above and below. I also like having the higher resolution video output.

Note: for resolution issues, you can check out real time statistics to see what zoom is using.

    The Importance Of Phone Interviews

Phone interviews can make or break your candidacy for a job. While they are a good means for an employer to save the time and costs required to interview candidates in person, they are by their very nature impersonal.

In some cases, you wont even be talking to a hiring managera human resources staffer or an administrative assistant may simply ask you a preset list of questions and record your answers for later review by their superior.

These types of interviews thus come with their own special challenges. For one thing, a phone interview is likely the first time youll speak directly with a representative from the employer, and you wont be able to rely upon body language to build rapport. And, unlike emailing back and forth, a phone interview offers no chance to re-read and re-formulate your thoughts.
