Personality Tests As Interview Process Steps

WIN: RODE and RHINO ultimate interview set up!

Personality tests are used in some assessments. Although their results can partially indicate whether a candidate is a match when it comes to soft skills and company culture, these tests can rarely give an utterly accurate insight. And because of that, they cant be labeled as the most solid point of reference.

Nevertheless, if youre still keen on conducting them, the right way to squeeze them into the process is to place them as a second step.

In an ideal outline, the first stage should be a light-tech talk with engineers. After this initial screening, HR takes over. That way, when you have two convos going on, it is much easier to estimate both tech and soft skills simultaneously.

Include Your Intent For The Meeting

Since informational interviews can serve multiple purposes, it is helpful to explain why youre requesting to meet. Include if youd like to learn more about the recipients position or the company. You may offer a brief description of the questions you may ask, such as those relating to their career path, educational background or daily responsibilities. Describing your intent for the meeting can help them prepare for the interview so you both can benefit from it.

A Typical Interview Process In A Young Company Can Be Too Complex

Businesses that are aiming to grow and scale show different fields of interest when coming up with a hiring tactic. However, there is a visible paradox that depicts their ways. They are all after senior developers, ninjas, pirates, and other IT leprechauns. On the other hand they are often defiant when it comes to simplifying their processes. Multi-step screenings, whiteboards, and homework assignments sometimes seem to be getting out of hand.

Here is a massive disclaimer: not all young companies are like this. But those who are, think that they have solid reasons to dig deep into the applicants knowledge and background. Are they right? And how much does it cost?

As the complexity of the open position rises, the number of involved individuals grows as well. More people participating = more hiring costs. The math is simple. And the processes should be too.

    Set Up Informational Interviews

An informational interview is a meeting with an employer or professional within a specific industry.

These types of interviews are used to learn about the skills, training, and experience needed for an occupation. It’s also a way to learn about a specific company or industry. This allows you to evaluate how well your skills and interests fit with a particular career or employer. Informational interview can also help you get job leads and develop key contacts to tap the hidden job market .

Unlike a job interview, you are the interviewer in an informational interview and are expected to drive the interaction:

    • Keep your conversations friendly, but businesslike. Give a brief summary of your objectives. Then explain how your accomplishments support this objective.
    • Prepare plenty of questions to keep the conversation moving. Include questions about the occupation or business, but ask about other things too: Do they enjoy their work? How do they spend their day? Avoid questions that be answered with a simply a yes or no. See examples of common informational interview questions below.
    • Never ask for a job during an informational interview.

Effective Interviewing: What About Interview Room Set Up

Sometimes we have to do things we are not always comfortable with. Hey, really thats just life. This topic may seem elementary to the interview dynamic, but from training and research we see novices and experienced interviewers not doing what is best, and they have plenty of reasons/excuses.

Despite what some may ignore, the arrangement of interview room remains an important aspect toward success in your interviews. Strategizing how to maximize the set up is something we should always consider be it a victim, witness, or subject interview. This strategizing should be done before and throughout the interview. This dynamic applies to criminal investigations, administrative, audits, and any important interactions you intend to have.

When setting up a room for conducting an interview, there are a few basic rules the interviewer should keep in mind. Aside from making the interviewee feel as comfortable as possible, the interview room should also facilitate clear communication, including non-verbal. This means that physical barriers should be minimized between the interviewee that might block the interviewers view of them.

There are good reasons for this. Firstly, a physical barrier, such as a table, can act as a psychological barrier. In a situation in which open communication is sought, putting up barriers obviously goes against the goal. Those barriers serve to diminish the effect of rapport, which is something that must be maximized throughout the interview process.

    Prepare Questions For The Interview

While you are waiting for a response, you can prepare specific questions you want to ask them. It may be a good idea to rehearse the questions so that when you are in the informational interview, it sounds more conversational. Prepare questions related to the employees career path to show them your interest in what they do. If you want to know more about the company, you can ask questions about the culture, management, departments and what leaders typically expect from employees.

    Ask For The Appropriate Individual

If a receptionist does answer your call, ask for the appropriate individual after you introduce yourself. For example, ask for the interviewer using their first and last name. If the interviewer answers your call, use this step to ensure you are speaking with the correct individual. Here are two examples for each case:

Example:“Hello, I’m Gemma Rutherford, and I’m calling for a scheduled interview for the accounts payable clerical position. May I speak with Jackie Renshaw, please?”

Example:“Hi, this is Gemma Rutherford, and I’m calling for our scheduled phone interview today. Am I speaking with Jackie Renshaw?”

    Welcome Questions From The Candidate

Dont forget the welcome questions from the candidate. This is important not only so that the candidate has the chance to ask anything that will help them feel secure about the job that he or she is applying for.

It is also an important opportunity for you to see how invested the candidate is in the company and whether theyll be a good fit. Are they asking about day-to-day tasks? What about the big picture? This is a great opportunity to see if the candidate will be a cultural fit at your company.
