How To Thank For The Interview

Use Key Facts From The Interview In Your Thank You

How to Write a Thank You Letter after a job interview

There are a few important facts youll need to take away from your interview, so you can get your thank you letter right.

First and most importantly, you’ll need to know who interviewed you. What was her name and how is it correctly spelled? Does she go by a more formal name on her business card? What was her title? This is where exchanging business cards is handy.

If you dont have business cards or for some reason that exchange didn’t happen, check the company directory or website to glean this information. The information may also be available from emails sent prior to the interview.

Other people may have entered the interview room briefly or joined you for a tour of the office or facility. It is good to exchange business cards with these people as well. You can mention them in your note to your main interviewer. Depending on the length of time you spent with them, you may want to send those individuals a thank you note as well.

It never hurts to be in the good graces of multiple people at the company with which you are interviewing. You never know who will lobby for you to be the top choice. Be sure they have your contact information on your card and send them a thank you letter if you feel it is appropriate.

You may also want to take a mental note of what you liked best about the workplace, and any hobbies or interests you had in common with the interviewer. These can make good additions to personalize your thank you note.

Do You Need To Send A Thank You Email After An Interview

Its recommended that you send a thank you email after each job interview you attend. Doing so shows the employer that you appreciate their time, and just as importantly, that youre still interested in the position. After attending an interview, the employer isnt sure that you still want this job .

So its important to write a thank you message and to reaffirm your interest in the position and tell them that youre eager to hear about the next steps. If you dont say this, they wont know!

Address The Note Correctly

When addressing your interviewer, be sure to use the correct name, spelling and prefix. You’ll want to avoid any mistakes, so double-check that the email address is correct as well. Even if you’re on a first-name basis with the interviewer, it’s important to display elevated professionalism in the thank you note. Using “Dear Mr./Ms. ” is always a safe bet when addressing them.

Decide Between Email Or Paper

Most businesses will accept an emailed thank you, but be aware of the company and its values. For example, more traditional organizations may prefer a handwritten thank you note. Though usually unnecessary, most of the time a paper note will seem more personal, and it will likely set you apart from other candidates. The mail service could delay your note, so consider dropping it off in person to ensure it gets there promptly.

If you’re unsure, you can always send both an email and a paper thank you note. In this case, send the email as soon as you get home from the interview, then mail the formal letter as soon as you can after that.

Before You Send Proofread Everything

Email templates are only as good as the effort you put into filling them out and proofreading them.

Go over every detail and make sure it actually makes sense for your situation. If not, sending that thank you email or letter will do more harm than good.

Example: In the third sample email earlier in this article, it says, thank you for taking the time to meet with me.

If you had a phone interview, you should say, thank you for taking the time to talk on the phone with me.

Right?

Otherwise, its going to sound a bit odd, and they might suspect you just cut & pasted from a template. Not good!

So be careful, take your time with these sample emails, and make sure every single word makes sense.

Keep It Short And Mind Your Structure

In the same vein, dont suddenly write a novel about how much you love the company or the person you talked to. You may have many things to tell this recruiter or hiring manager, but try to stick to one main point, question, or fun fact.

Personally, if Im reading a thank-you email longer than five sentences, Ive probably started to wonder if the time to read it was worth my investment. Knowing how to write a thank you email after an interview is a valuable skill. Trust me.

Should You Send An Email Printed Note Or Handwritten Card To The Interviewer

Once upon a time, only a . But these days an email is acceptable as a thank you for a job interview. But remember not to be too informal use formal titles and proper salutation and signature.

A typed and signed letter is also good and even a handwritten card might be a nice touch depending on the interviewer and the type of job you applied for.

No matter how you compose and send your note, be sure to proofread it, and check for any spelling errors or typos. A simple mistake could be a big strike against you.

The best part about using an email is speed and accuracy of delivery. While any form of communication can go astray, if you have already exchanged emails you can be sure your thank you note will be received by the interviewer. A printed note or card can be more personal in touch but might take longer to reach the interviewer, especially in a larger company with a big mailroom where pieces of mail exchange many hands.

Mention A Specific Moment From The Interview

How to Thank an Employer After a Job Interview

As hiring managers interview a lot of candidates, usually back-to-back, it’s good to remind them about your interview by mentioning specific moments. Think about a topic or question that interested you, maybe a personal connection you made, so the hiring manager knows exactly which interview you’re referring to.

Example:I really enjoyed talking about your trip to Japan. I’ve added your recommendations to my bucket list and can’t wait to visit!

End The Email Reiterating Your Gratitude

The last sentence of your email should reiterate your appreciation for the interviewer’s time and consideration. This brings the thank-you email back to its original purpose. Then, end with a brief and respectful salutation.

Example:Thanks again for taking the time to talk to me yesterday. It was great meeting you!

Kind regards,

What Is A Thank

A subject line is the information you type into the subject field of a message of thanks before emailing the hiring agent who interviewed you for a job. While the subject line only includes a few words, developing it is a key step for interviewees due to several reasons, including:

  • The hiring agent sees it first. The subject line is the first section that hiring managers see of your thank-you email, and they can see it before opening your message. If you made a good impression in your interview, seeing the subject line can be an effective reminder that communicates your professionalism and enthusiasm to the recruiter even if he or she is too busy to read your message immediately.
  • It can help you stand out from the crowd. Interviewers often have full inboxes with messages from job seekers, company emails, and messages from mailing lists. Consequently, its easy for a recruiter to miss an email in the inbox clutter. A great subject line can differentiate your thank-you email from other messages and motivate the recipient to read it quickly.
  • It can help you to build a relationship. An engaging subject line in a timely thank-you email can build rapport with the interviewer by capturing his or her attention, starting a conversation, and further solidifying the good impression you made at the interview.

  • How did the interview go? Did anything weird happen?
  • Did I flub on a question I know I have a better answer for?
  • Did I forget to ask the interviewer one of my questions?
  • Is there something additional this interviewer should know about me?
