What Has The Reaction Been To The Interview Itself

CBC News: The National | Meghan and Harrys Oprah interview Vaccine optimism | March 7, 2021

Washington Post columnist Margaret Sullivan said Oprah Winfrey proved herself to be the best celebrity interviewer ever.

Oprah best displayed her interviewing chops by relentlessly circling back to emotional or newsmaking comments like a heat-seeking missile, Sullivan wrote in a Perspective column.

Not much was allowed to simply disappear in a flurry of words, as happens far too often in interviews. Oprah did not let the couple get away with general hints or diplomatic niceties.

Vox columnist Emily VanDerWerff also praised Oprahs interview style, saying, she was the only person who could conduct the Harry and Meghan interview.

Oprah excels at creating a friendly, warm atmosphere in which famous people feel as though they can share their innermost thoughts,VanDerWerff wrote.

Its not clear how much the Meghan and Harry interview happened roughly as presented on television, or if it was edited to create a more coherent progression of its subjects thoughts .

But Oprahs genius lies less in the overall scope of an interview and more in the micromanagement of individual moments.

An interview subject can say something shocking, and Oprah is skilled at guiding the exchange so that it plays out to its fullest effect, while giving the subject space to process their thoughts and decide whether they want to share more.

Meghan Says Kate Made Her Cry In Bridesmaid Dress Incident Not The Reverse

Oprah asked Meghan about an incident reported in the British tabloids that her sister-in-law Catherine made her cry. But Meghan said the situation was actually the reverse.

According to Meghan, Catherine was the one who made Meghan cry about flower girl dresses, and Catherine apologized later and brought her flowers and a note.

However, the tabloid rumors were just some of many unfavorable headlines toward Meghan that she says were constructed to fit into a polarizing narrative of a “hero and a villain.”

While Meghan refused to speak unfairly about Catherine since she said she has forgiven her, she did make it a point to acknowledge that everyone in the royal family knew the true story and chose not to tell it.

On Friday, CBS This Morning aired a clip with the pair discussing Winfrey’s call to Meghan to ask for an interview prior to her wedding.

In 2018, the duchess told Winfrey “it’s not the right time”.

But Meghan said “so many things” had changed since then.

At the beginning of last year, Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping back as senior Royals on social media, with the couple’s resignation as working Royals being formalised last month.

“We have the ability to make our own choices in a way that I couldn’t have said yes to you then that wasn’t my choice to make,” Meghan said.

“So, as an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is … different than I think what people imagine it to be … it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege, in some ways, to be able to say ‘yes I’m ready to talk’.

“To be able to make a choice on your own and just be able to speak for yourself.”

A few days ago, another preview clip featured the duchess being asked how she felt about the palace hearing her speak out.

“And if that comes with risk of losing things … I mean, there’s a lot that’s been lost already.”

“I remember that conversation very well,” Meghan said. “I wasn’t even allowed to have that conversation with you personally, right.” She indicated that Buckingham Palace communications staff was present.

“I couldn’t have said yes to you then,” Meghan said. “That wasn’t my choice to make. Dating with me, or with any member of the royal family I guess, is kind of flipped upside down, he said of his and Meghan’s courtship. All the dates become dinners, or watching the TV or chatting at home. And then eventually once you become a couple, then you venture out to dinners, or the cinema and everything else. So everything was done back to front with us. We got to spend an enormous amount of time just the two of us, rather than going to friends’ houses or out for dinner where there were other distractions. There were no distractions, and that was an amazing thing. We went from zero to 60 in the first two months.
