Once he starts drilling the devil for the most common fears he uses against man, Hill quickly finds he has even cleverer ways of ruining us. The devil claims to first invade our minds with the principle of habit in order to then establish the habit of drifting.
Heres what drifting is, straight from the horses mouth:
I can best define the word drift by saying that people who think for themselves never drift, while those who do little or no thinking for themselves are drifters.
A drifter is the antithesis of a Stoic. Drifters let themselves be tossed around in life and allow externals to dominate their minds. They go nowhere because theyre not using their brains to think.
Later in the book, Hill explains how drifting eventually turns into a hypnotic rhythm, which keeps people busy with trivialities, and over time, drifting becomes permanent.
Unless we outwit the devil, that is.

What a creative approach for writing a book, especially considering its time. Even 80 years after it was written, Outwitting The Devil shines with simple ideas, packaged in stories we can understand, and repeated in fun ways so they stick. Napoleon Hill may have been a controversial figure, but in his writing, I sense he had his fellow citizens best interests at heart.

JK: Had you ever read a Georgette Heyer novel before recording Sylvester?
MATT: Im ashamed to say Sylvester was my first Heyer, but Ive since read 3 more. A friend of mine is a huge fan of her books, so I was very much aware of them.
JK: If not, did you have any preconceived ideas about the book?
MATT: I had previously narrated two Regency Romances, that I knew were written by an author whos a great admirer of Heyer, and who writes with a similar style meticulously researched, witty & sophisticated, which I greatly enjoyed reading The Devil You Know and Bless Thine Inheritance by the wonderful Sophia Holloway. I dont think I was expecting Sylvester to be quite as entertaining as I found it to be, or for the characters to be as fully realised as they are.
JK: Were you surprised when you read Sylvester? What did you think of the book?
MATT: Its always a delight to find that you enjoy reading a title youve been booked for, and to find yourself wanting to know what happens next. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that I immediately felt an affinity with both Sylvester and Phoebe.
JK: You did a wonderful job creating the different characters through their voices. Was that difficult to do? Is it hard for a man to do female voices?
