In-text citation

Because the name of the interviewer appears in the in-text citation, it wont always be clear whom youre quoting. Its important to clarify in the sentence when youre quoting the interviewees words.

For interviews published in other source types , follow the relevant format, listing the interviewer as the author in each case.

From the Purdue University Owl& APA Style websites on citing a personal communications in APA format:

Personal interviews, emails, phone conversations, text messages, live speeches, and social media messages are all examples of personal communication. No personal communication is included in your reference list instead, parenthetically cite the communicatorâs name, the phrase âpersonal communication,â and the date of the communication in your main text only.

Here are two examples of how to create in-text citations for personal communications.

A. P. Smith also claimed that many of her students had difficulties with APA style.

Follow the MLA format template. List the interviewee as the author, followed by the title of the chapter in which the interview appears. List the title of the book as the title of the container and the author of the book as an other contributor. Then list the publication details and the page range for the chapter:

Bechdel, Alison. Alison Bechdel . Outside the Box: Interviews with Contemporary Cartoonists, by Hillary L. Chute, U of Chicago P, 2014, pp. 15576.

Note that this example is an exception to our guidelines for citing a chapter in a book by one author. You would normally create an entry only for the book, not for an individual chapter. But since, by convention, the interviewee is considered the author of an interview, the chapter containing the interview is cited separately. If, however, you cite several interviews in the book and your discussion focuses on the work of the interviewer, then you might create an entry for the book as a whole and key your in-text citations for the interviews to it.

Place the title of the larger work in italics. If the interview appears as an independent title, italicize it. Determine the medium of publication and fill in the rest of the entry with the information required by that medium. For books, include the author or editor name after the book title.

Note: If the interview from which you quote does not feature a title, add the descriptor Interview after the interviewees name. You may also use the descriptor Interview by to add the name of the interview to the entry if it is relevant to your paper.

How To Cite A Lecture Or Speech In Mla Format

Any time you use a fact, a figure, or other information from a source to support your position in a piece of academic writing, you need to cite the source you used for that information. This is true no matter where you got the information, be it a book, an article, a television show, or a live speech.

Citing a source notes information that came from a source other than your own observations or insights. It involves crediting that sources author and publisher and including any other relevant information about the people and/or groups who created that source. If a piece of information you cite in your work came from a lecture you attended or a speech you listened to, your citation needs to credit the speaker, their platform, and when relevant, any others who contributed to the information you referenced.

Keep in mind that when youre citing a review or an article about a speech or lecture, youre citing a secondary source about the speech. Thus, you need to cite the article according to MLAs guidelines for citing articles, not speeches.

    What Are Personal Communications

The category Personal Communications is used in situations where you are taking information from a source such as an email thread or an interview you conducted with someone else. In this case the work isnt published anywhere, someone else couldnt find and read the full interview or email on their own.

Sometimes you may find interviews with people in journals, magazines, newspapers, websites, etc. In those cases dont use the Personal Communications category. Instead, cite them according to where you found the information.

For example, an interview in a magazine would be cited like a magazine article. That way anyone reading your assignment could easily track down the interview for themselves by finding the same magazine article.
