Great job! Your CV and application have been approved in the first screening phase of the recruitment process. Nowadays it is not uncommon for the second stage in the screening process to be pre-recorded video interviews, where recruiters send a list of pre-recorded questions for you to record answers back to.

Before we get into how you should answer these, it is important to know WHY this stage is used and the purpose of this video interview phase. The recruiters have at this point evaluated your background, education and work history etc. What they are missing at this point is a clear picture of your personality, energy and communication skills. Recruiters use pre-recorded video interviews because it makes it timewise possible to evaluate a larger pool of candidates to get a better feeling of the ones they want to invite to live interviews. Recruiters often have a very tight schedule, and they would not be able to conduct as many face to face interviews, group interviews or phone interviews as they would with pre-recorded video interviews.

There are a number different ways that companies use video interviews. You need to know WHAT to expect:

There are three main things you need think about:

Get Your Location Ready

Find a quiet space with no interruptions. If you live in a shared house, you may need to warn others to be quiet around the time of your interview.

Find somewhere you can sit that does not have anything distracting in the background. Make sure you have good natural light or use a lamp so that the interviewer can see you well.

If you can, use a computer or laptop rather than a tablet or mobile phone. Position it so the camera is at eye level.

It may also help if you:

  • use headphones to improve your sound quality
  • split your screen and have your prompt cards on one half and the interview on the other
  • close down any other windows on your computer and turn off your mobile phone

Describe Your Work Ethic

You may have tremendous skills to show off, but if timeliness isnt one of them, it could hurt your relationship with your employer. Its awkward for employers to constantly buzz workers for unmet deliverables.

So they want to know whether you have the bandwidth and agility to keep up with peak times. By asking about your work ethic, they are trying to gauge your availability and ability to deliver on time.

Make Sure You Have The Right Devices Available

If you have no other options, you can probably use your smartphone for this interview, assuming it has a camera. However, you will very likely make the best impression using a camera connected to a computer, assuming the computer also has a microphone and a speaker

Double-check with the interviewer if you need to use your smartphone.

When possible, test the connection to be sure it works before the interview regardless of device used.

In advance, test your microphone and camera to be sure that they work. Even perfect answers to the questions wont make an impact if they cant hear your answers or see you talk.

Can You Start Again If You Are Not Happy With The Results

Once again, its up to the recruiter to decide whether or not they will allow candidates to do so. Some prefer spontaneity but others will let you start again. Moutet said, We do not recommend going back and re-recording anything because we would like it to be as natural as possible. Its supposed to be a substitute for that first phone call, when you are on the phone you cannot delete what you have just said and start again! If you record the same bit two or three times, you will know what the question is in advance, so you will have a pre-prepared answer and it will no longer have the same impact.

Recruiters often allow it anyway, she said. They know that is a stressful and unsettling task, especially the first time, so offering people the opportunity to re-record it can be reassuring for the candidates.
