There are a few different formats for a case interview. The format of your case interview will depend on the firm that you are interviewing with, and the specific round. Keep in mind that regardless of format, the same thinking process applies to all interview types.
The interviewer is looking for the answer to this one question: Do you have the skills to be a good management consultant?
An interviewer-led case interview features a highly-structured format where the interviewer controls the focus, tempo, and sequence of the problem-solving process. This format typically consists of five distinct phases.

Describe yourself/your experience in 1 or 2 minutes .
- Many interviewers will ask you to describe yourself in a sharply limited timeframe. Be prepared for this request and be sure that you are succinct and articulate. Remember, this person may be interviewing 12 people that day, and your job is to impress him or her quickly.
- When you receive this question, there is a good chance that the interviewer has not had a chance read your resume completely, and is interested to see what you select to present in those few minutes.
- Be sure to highlight your education, any key work experience and one other item that is interesting/relevant . There is no need to say why you want to be a Consultant in response to this questionâthat will come up later.

This is quite an unoriginal question to be asked and also rather outdated, but apparently, some consultants keep asking it .
I generally believe honesty is the best policy, and for someone at the start of their career whilst you may have a view of where you want to get to in 5 years, it is unrealistic to expect either
a) you know specifically what exactly you will be doing in 5 years
b) that you won’t change your perspective along the way
Having interviewed 50+ candidates both in and outside consulting, I would be skeptical of anyone who gave an answer that was too specific or tailored for consulting as being either ungrounded or disingenious e.g. saying they want to be a partner , principal or thought leader.
At the same time, you don’t want to be too broad or unclear e.g. saying you have no idea, as that wouldn’t send a great signal either.
A good middle ground might look like something like:
- You don’t really know what the world will look like in 5 years so couldn’t say specifically
- But you want to work in consulting to apply your current skills , develop new skills and also figure out what sectors / types of work you are good at and enjoy
- That said, you have had an ambition to be a business leader or thinker…

Recruiting contact, then phone interview, then multiple 30 minute video interviews. The recruiter was not organized nor did she have good background on the position. The interviews were not position based. They kept saying that they wanted to find good people and create positions for them. You really can’t do that in consulting. You have an offering, sell those offerings and then staff to work sold.
