7 Ways to Improve Interviewing Skills

This translates into reviewing your skills, abilities and characteristics in detail and identifying those that apply to the potential future employer and job and also present them in a way that match their goals and needs. Imagine yourself in the actual position, what do you offer to the organisation? If you’ve reflected on this beforehand, it will make it easier to answer clearly and well during the interview. This gives an impression of good introspection. Try to remember relevant examples of applying similar skills in your previous job as it is always good to mention these during the interview.

It is of vital importance not to claim that you can do/know something that you do not. This is dishonest and it may ruin the whole interview process. Imagine that you state that you can speak fluent French and, during the interview, the panel decide to switch the interview language to French this will be a very awkward moment!

A poorly chosen email address, used for communication purposes in the CV and application form, can reflect on your professionalism. Keep it simple and select a professional-looking email address e.g. lastname.firstname@

Use Your Listening Ears

Obviously, youve prepared your answers to common interview questions. And, you have a game plan for what to say for less common questions. But, before you whip out an answer you really want to give, make sure youre listening first.

While you may think you know what the question is, make sure you dont half listen. That means listening to the whole question and not coming up with what you think is an awesome answer half-way through the question. For starters, you may not answer the entire question. And, worse, you may give the wrong answer to the wrong question.

Not answering the question thats being asked indicates that you not only need to improve your interview skills, but you also lack listening skills and dont pay attention to the details. Listen thoughtfully and carefully before answering a question, then make sure you answer the question directly and completely. And, dont be afraid to ask for clarity if youre not 100% positive of whats being asked.

What Is An Interview

You should consider an interview as the time to shine and to sell yourself in an efficient yet warm manner.

A job interview is essentially a meeting organised by a recruiter that is used to evaluate a potential employee for prospective employment. However, consider this meeting as a two-way process between the candidate and the interviewer. The interviewer wants to find out how well the candidate could do the job and fit in with their organisation and team and the candidate aims to show that they are the best person for the job and for the organisation but they also should aim to find out more about the work environment.

Job interviews are usually face-to-face meetings however, in recent years, telephone interviews and Skype interviews have become more commonplace. Interviews last approximately 45-60 mins, although telephone interviews may be slightly shorter.

Depending on the type of job you have applied for and seniority of the role, the interview panel may vary between three and 12 members. Usually, the more senior the job, the wider the composition of the panel.

Thank-you letters are an excellent way to show your interest in the position. Job Interview Tips

Here’s how to land the job of your dreams.

An interview is a business transaction wherein the objective of the hiring manager is to make a selection among job candidates called in for interviews. A candidate has two challenges: first, to convince the hiring manager that he or she is the ideal candidate for the position, and second, to outshine the others . The following are several suggestions.

First, prepare for the interview by working with a seasoned interview coach. An interview coach can practice with you certain mock-interviewing techniques, thereby helping you to not only answer difficult interview questions but also recognize traps and avoid saying the wrong things. As an interview coach, I need no less than five hours to get someone ready for the big test. If the result is to get the job, then the fee paid for such a service is merely a drop in the bucket.

Second, prepare your SARBs: situation/action/result/benefit. These are short vignettes about your experience, describing for the interviewer how you solved problems on the job and the results and benefits to employers. They are the tools you bring with you to the interview. If presented well, the examples will convince the hiring manager you’re the right person for the job.

Come Up With Thoughtful Questions

Most employers end the interview by asking you if you have questions you want to ask. Try to prepare thoughtful questions ahead of time to show the employer youre taking the interview seriously and want to work for them. Dont ask questions that the interviewer already answered in the job posting or throughout the interviewer as it may show that you werent listening. Instead, ask follow-up questions, such as, What do you enjoy about working here? or What are the challenges of this position?

Be Observant And Listen Closely To The Interviewer

It is important to remain attentive to what the interviewer is saying throughout the interview. You should try to pay close attention to everything the interviewer says to ensure you can answer each question appropriately. Try not to allow things going on around you to distract you from the conversation with the interviewer.

In addition to listening closely to the questions they ask, try to focus on how they respond to the answers you give to each question. You might be able to learn new information that will help you provide better answers to questions they ask you later in the interview. Doing this will show the interviewer you are interested in what they are saying and prove your ability to pay attention to detail.

The Best Ways To Improve Your Job Interviewing Skills

Job interviews put a lot of pressure on the applicant. Job seekers need to effectively be able to communicate why they are the best candidate for the job, how they fit within a companys culture, what value they bring to the employer, among other things. These reasons alone are enough to make anyone nervous as they are not everyday topics. In addition, the interviewer needs to be able to give a good first impression and keep it from the very first interaction to the end of the interview. Yet, actively preparing, practicing, and improving your interview skills can help the interview process be much easier and more enjoyable. Here are the best ways to improve your job interviewing skills and make the next interview a breeze.

  • Practice professionalism
  • Make your professionalism and confidence come out naturally. An effective way to accomplish this is by having practice interviews with family, friends, or by recording yourself. Practice your introductions, answering common interview questions, your body language, speech, and your farewells. Keep acting in a professional manner even after your mock interviews, so this type of behavior can become second nature and easily come out during your job interviews. The less you think about the way you act during the interview the smoother the interview process will be allowing you to portray an approachable and confident persona.

  • Know your professional story
  • Become a researcher
  • Practice positivity
  • Practice showing interest
  • Be Humorous But To A Certain Level:

The person taking the interview may have some sense of humour. But before or during the interview, it is unknown to the candidate. If any kind of joke is made by the candidate it can be considered as an offensive joke thus showing an unprofessional attitude. This can lead the interviewer to think that the person isnt a proper fit for the job and so competitors can go ahead. So if anything is unknown, it is advisable that the candidate doesnt say anything offensive.

    Before And After The Interview

There are some critical steps to take before and after the job interview to set yourself up for success.

Before the job interview, you should do the following:

    • Make a checklist. Using the above tips, make a checklist of areas you want to improve before your interview. Schedule time and enlist help for question-and-answer rehearsals. Practice your body language and breathing.
    • Review your resume. While reviewing your resume before the interview, look carefully for errors, vague ideas or confusing phrases. A second set of eyes never hurts, either.
    • Get specific about the position. Give some real thought to the specific attributes you know you can bring to the position youre applying for. Similarly, understand and be ready to articulate exactly what about this company or organization appeals to you.
    • Prepare real-world anecdotes. Have some anecdotes ready to illustrate how youve used specific skills or talents in the real world. Its one thing to say you can do something its better to show ways youve already done it.

After the job interview, you should do the following:

Be Prepared For An Interviewer That Will Try To Put You Off By Their Questioning

It rarely happens but the interviewer may try to see how you respond under pressure by employing an aggressive line of questioning, or ask incoherent or non-sensible questions or questions that betray a lack of understanding in the topic. Don’t ever let your temper get the better of you and make sure you remain calm and polite.

To show you have the qualities the business is seeking, prepare anecdotes that explain how you showed these essential qualities in past jobs.

Clarify Interview Questions During The Job Interview

INTERVIEW TIPS: Look Beyond the Resume

Most people are hesitant to ask an interviewer to clarify a question, according to Sara Sutton, CEO and founder of the job listing website FlexJobs. They may be concerned the interviewer will think theyre being inattentive. However, ensuring you thoroughly understand the question can help you give a thoughtful, relevant response. Try to paraphrase the question and say, Is this what youre asking?’ Sutton advised.

You also can use question clarification as an opportunity to turn the tables on interviewers and ask them questions. By treating the interview like a two-way conversation and asking intelligent and thoughtful questions, candidates can gauge whether the company is a good fit for them, according to Dana Leavy-Detrick, a personal brand strategist and career consultant at Brooklyn Resume Studio.

Candidates should pose questions that will ultimately provide them with deeper insight into the companys values, culture and even challenges, Leavy-Detrick said. For example, candidates can ask an interviewer how they mapped their career path with the company. They can also ask interviewers to describe a typical day or highlight qualities that make someone successful in the organization.

Did you know?: Hiring managers often ask common interview questions, like What is your greatest strength? However, they cant ask illegal job interview questions about race and sexual orientation because of the potential for discrimination.
