A Guide To Writing A Memorable Thank

Sending a thank-you letter after an interview might seem old-fashioned, but itâs just as important to write one as ever. One survey from TopResume showed that 68 percent of hiring managers say that a candidateâs decision to include or not include a thank-you note after an interview affects their final hiring decision. But while sending a thank-you note has become expected, it’s not enough to simply send a note that says “Thanks for chatting with me” â you need to put some thought into it. In this guide, weâll show you how to write a thank-you note that will impress interviewers and increase your odds of getting a job offer.

Based On What I’ve Learned I Believe I Can Do This Job Well

Telling the interviewer that you believe you can meet the expectations discussed in the interview can make them feel that you care about the compatibility of you and the company. This shows that you took everything they said into consideration and only made your decision about your ability once you received all the information.

What To Do When You Are Declined A Position

You will not always get the job you want. Its hard to fit perfectly into a companys needs. So dont take it personally if you are contacted following a job interview and told you didnt get the job. Instead, treat this as a learning opportunity.

When a recruiter contacts you with the bad news, thank him/her again for the consideration but also ask a couple of questions. First, explain that you would like to improve your interviewing skills and ask for suggestions on how you can interview better in the future. Second, ask if there any qualifications or experiences that would make you a more appealing candidate.

You may or may not get specific feedback, but theres a chance you will learn something valuable for future interviews.

The Benefits Of Sending A Thank

Sending a thank-you email has a couple of important advantages over the old-fashioned, paper-and-ink variety of thank-you letter.

With an email, for example, you can do more than remind your prospective employer of your qualities and skills: You can actually show them by including a link to your online portfolio, , or professional social networking profiles.

You’ll also have the opportunity to mention anything you wish you had said during the interview, but didn’t get the chance to discuss.

Sending an email immediately after or within 24 hours of a job interview is crucial if the hiring manager will be making a quick decision.

Ideally, your note will reach the interviewer prior to a hiring decision and while your meeting is still top of mind.

Tips For Writing An Interview Thank

Here are additional tips for writing a strong thank-you email after a job interview and what to include:

  • Express Why You Want the Job: In addition to thanking the person you interviewed with, your thank-you note should reinforce the fact that you want the job, so view this thank-you as a follow-up “sales” letter. Restate why you want the job, what your qualifications are, and how you might make significant contributions.
  • Bring Up Anything You Wish You Had Said: Your message is also the perfect opportunity to discuss anything of importance that your interviewer neglected to ask. For example, if you didnt have a chance to explain why you thought that you would fit in well with the company culture, you might briefly state this in the email.
  • Revisit Any Issues Brought Up During the Interview: Finally, use your letter to address any issues and concerns that came up during the interview, including topics you neglected to answer as thoroughly as you might have wished. For instance, if you feel that you botched an interview question, you could explain your answer in more detail here.

Why You Should Thank Someone For An Interview

How To Write A Thank You Email After An Interview & IMPRESS THE INTERVIEWER

When writing a second interview thank-you note, it’s important to specifically state why you are the best candidate for the job. Since you made it to the second interview, the stakes are high, and you are definitely being compared to other highly-ranked candidates for the position.

Be Your Best Self On Paper

Your cover letter and resume were all about representing the best version of your professional self, and this thank-you note should be no different. Dont resort to overly familiar language just because youve met someone in person, but also dont suddenly become cold and dispassionate. Keep the same tone you would in any other email to the recruiter or hiring manager, and if theres a place to remind them of your passion for the role, go for it!

The only thing you should avoid in a thank-you is trying to sell yourself once again. Youre writing this note to show you appreciate someones time, not to tell them youre awesome. Remember that.

Reiterating Interest In The Job And Company And What You Bring To The Table

After thanking the interviewer, express your excitement for learning about the role and company. Reiterate your interest in the job. An interview is a time for the company to see if you are a good fit for the role, but you should also be attentive to learning if you think the company and role is a good fit for you. Not sending a thank you email could be interpreted as a lack of interest in the role. Its also important to align yourself with the companys mission, values, and culture.

It was a pleasure learning more about the role and company. I love the companys dedication to uplifting the homeless community in Los Angeles, a mission that is close to my heart as I volunteer at the homeless shelter twice a week.
Emphasize what you bring to the table. This is crucial. Now that you have interviewed and have additional context on the role and what they are seeking, you can specifically address how you are a great fit for the role. If they are struggling with sales, discuss your experience with winning sales. If the Marketing Director is struggling to keep up with her workload because of lack of support, discuss your experience with assisting high-level managers and executives.

What Should You Avoid In Your Thank

Okay, now you know all about what to include in your thank-you note after interview.

But what about the things you need to avoid?

We got you covered.

The first big mistake you can make is waiting too long.

As we mentioned, you should send your thank-you emails within 24 hours from the end of the interview.

Sending it out later can and probably would negate the effect that your thank-you email would have had.

Another thing you should never consider doing is copy-pasting the same email, or adding more people in the To: field.

You need to make your thank-you emails personalized.

Otherwise, they not only lose their effect, but they can backfire.

Last, but not least, dont forget to write a thank-you email to each interviewer you met.

You should also make the habit of asking people for their business cards.

It is a great manner to take on, and it is also a great way to keep track of all their names and contacts you can use for your thank-you emails.

What To Say In Your Thank

What you say and how you say it are even more important than the manner in which you send it. A standard thank-you note should accomplish several things:

  • Thank the person for the opportunity to interview with the company.
  • Plug your skills: “The job is a good fit for me because of XYZ and my past experience in XYZ.”
  • Finally, recap some of the conversational highlights.

Interviewers have short memories. A thank-you note is your final chance to make yourself stand apart from all of the others who want the same position.

How to Write a Thank You Email After the Interview & WOW Them!

Yes, you want that job. But, you still need to avoid these types of phrases that place even more of a burden on that employer. You can be enthusiastic about the opportunity without making it the thing thats solely responsible for your happiness and well-being.

Emotional threats like this one wont do you any favors. On the contrary, they only make you seem desperateand perhaps even a little unstable.

Why Is A Thank

A thank-you email after a Zoom interview, just as with an in-person interview, is a great way to follow up with the hiring manager and express your gratitude. It shows the hiring manager you’re passionate about the position and the potential to work with them. If the hiring manager had a lot of video interviews, sending a thank-you email also reminds them about your experience, what you discussed during the interview, and why you’re a good fit for the role.

Send The Email Within 24 Hours

When it comes to sending your thank-you email, dont delay.

Do that within 24 hours, Nelson, the career coach, recommends.

If you interviewed in the morning, send it that afternoon. And if you interviewed in the afternoon, send it the following morning. A prompt note shows that youre responsive, a strong communicator with follow-through and that youre excited about the role.

If you wait two or three days to send it, though, the hiring manager might get a different impression of you that youre slow to respond or not too interested in the position.

Send A Unique Note To Each Interviewer

In instances where there are multiple interviewers, write an individualized note to everyone that spoke with you. Assume that your notes will be shared among the interviewers, so make sure not to repeat any content. Crafting unique notes for each recipient can show them that you value them and their contribution.

When To Send An After Interview Thank You Note

40 Thank You Email After Interview Templates á? TemplateLab

With any important piece of writing, planning is half the battle. Should you follow up over email, in a handwritten notecard, or on social media? And what should you write?

There are two vital factors to consider when writing a thank-you note after an interview: speed and specificity. Thank yous are not better late than never. In fact, most interviewers expect an email or letter within a day. That means time is of the essence, and you need to work quickly! As one Glassdoor recruiter puts it, it is vital to send a thank you email to your interviews within 24-48 hours.

Even though you must write quickly, you also need to personalize each thank-you note to the interviewer. Gone are the days where I would look at a template thank-you note and consider it worth my time to read. As Valerie LeClair, Grammarlys Director of Recruiting, once described to me,

Write from the heart! If a candidate is going to write a standardized, impersonal note, there is no reason to even send it.

But dont panic! Take a deep breath and reflect on your interview experience. Now, ask yourself these idea-generating questions:

  • How did the interview go? Did anything weird happen?
  • Did I flub on a question I know I have a better answer for?
  • Did I forget to ask the interviewer one of my questions?
  • Is there something additional this interviewer should know about me?
  • Did I discuss anything interesting? Find any similarities to my interviewer?

Use Correct Spelling And Grammar

One of the fastest ways to disappoint the recruiter is bad spelling and grammar. Not only is this sloppy and lazy, but it also shows the recruiter you don’t care and aren’t willing to take the time to ensure mistakes are avoided. Yes, we all make mistakes, but there is no excuse for language mistakes in a thank-you letter. Microsoft Word has an excellent proofreading tool and should be utilized. After writing the letter, check it using your computer’s proofreader. Next, read the letter out loud to catch any mistakes missed by Word. Keep in mind, Word often misses similarly spelled words and usage. For example, manger is mistaken for manager, and to is mistaken for too. Double check your information as well. Hiring managers take offense to misspelled names and incorrect addresses. Make sure it’s Stevens and not Stephens.

Thank You Email Length: How Long Should Your Message Be

Some samples above are more formal while others are more casual. Youll notice that theyre all relatively brief, though. In my experience as a recruiter, a short thank you email after the interview is best. On average, I recommend 85 to 150 words.

And thats true whether youre writing a thank you email after a phone interview, Zoom/video interview, or a second/third in-person interview.

Its also true whether youre writing to thank a recruiter, HR person, hiring manager, or anyone else who spent time interviewing you!

Your message could go up to 200 words if youre very far along in the hiring process and have spent multiple hours interviewing with people from the company, but Id still aim to be brief and concise, rather than sending a full page.

Use your best judgement, though. You know your industry and prospective employer, so think about what type of message theyll appreciate. The advice above is simply what works best for the greatest amount of people, on average.
