Dont Be Afraid To Ask For Clarification If You Need It
Its okay to ask for clarification on something or ask the interviewer to repeat a question once or twice in your interview.
This is true in any job interview and especially a video interview.
If you didnt hear a question clearly, ask them to repeat it. If youre unsure what exactly theyre asking, ask them to clarify.
You dont want to do this 10 times in an interview, but its fine to do it a couple of times, and its a lot better than answering before youre sure what theyre asking.
If you follow the 10 tips above, youll feel more confident and relaxed in your Zoom interview and youll get more job offers!
At the end of the day, its just like any interview. You need to give great answers. You should ask great questions, too. Just make sure youre comfortable with the technology before going into the conversation so that you can focus on those tasks.
Pay Attention To Your Body Language
How you present yourself on camera during your video interview will automatically convey a lot about you to your interviewer. To present yourself as attentive and professional, maintain good posture by placing both of your feet on the ground and sitting up straight. Try to avoid slouching or gesticulating too much while you speak, big movements can be distracting during video interviews.
Additionally, remember that if you are looking at your interviewers face on your computer monitor then to them it will appear as though you are looking down. Instead, be sure to look into your webcam as often as possibleespecially when you are speakingto look directly at your interviewer.
Why Is It Important To Dress Well
It is said that people create a lasting impression of you after 30 seconds of meeting. So, that doesnt give you much time to state your case. Dressing well will mean you have already done 50% of the work before you open your mouth.
Like if you were meeting in-person, to nail any interview you need to be prepared. We would always recommend taking the time to learn about the company, the role and its requirements in advance as well as carefully planning your outfit to look at your very best for the interview. Nothing in that respect has changed, even though it is via Zoom.
The only difference is that the expectations of the interviewer will have changed when it comes to dressing. I dont believe every interviewer would be expecting men to be sitting there in their best suit and tie day in, day out. This art of formality is assigned to work environments like offices or meetings. Not for sitting at your kitchen table.
But, this doesnt mean you should be kicking off the Oxfords and presenting a nonchalant demeanour. Finding the right balance is key to making the best first impression.

Zoom Job Interview: Startup
As you could probably guess, your outfit for a startup job interview can show a bit more personality. “Your look can be a little more relaxed to reflect their company culture while still looking put together so you are taken seriously,”Sargeant PR Founder Cory Sargeant tells TZR. “I think a patterned top or dress with a nice earring would help you land the job!”
Both Oh and Lacey agree that a startup interview is a good time to bring in prints, colors, and textures â but with one caveat. “Make sure it’s not too distracting,” Lacey says. “Jewelry, again, can always help make something more traditional pop and reflect more personality.” As for Oh, she suggests paying attention to the shape of your top since you’ll be seen solely from the waist up. “I would consider playing with prints and colors and sticking with silhouettes that have interesting details and structure around the shoulder or sleeves. I love this printed Carolina K top and always find Ulla Johnson blouses have great volume that is appropriate for Zoom meetings.”
Prepare Answers To The Most Common Questions
Dont get so sidetracked by setting up the technology that you forget to prepare for the interview itself mainly, how you plan to answer the top interview questions employers ask.
Also, think about any potential concerns they may have about your background in particular and how youll address those.
For example, they may want to know why you left your last job so soon, or why youre looking for a different type of job than youve done in the past, etc.
Anticipate the questions theyre likely to ask, practice your answers, and youll feel more relaxed in the interview.
You can also record yourself delivering your answers in the environment that youve set up. Look at the video recording, see how you look and sound, and then make adjustments before going live on Zoom with the employer.

How To Dress For Video Interview Success
We got used to video interviews during the pandemic. They’ve become the norm, and it’s a good bet they’re here to stay. If you have a video interview coming up, you need to do some serious video prepand that begins with what you should and shouldnt wear. So how do you dress for video-interview success?
1. Choose your shirt carefully
The most important clothing is what can be seen on the screen, so be sure your top half at least is not too casual. Dont wear just any old shirt. Aim for one that is unremarkableboring is better than loud. You want your interviewer to focus on you, not what youre wearing, so keep things minimal, neutral, and professional. A classic button-down shirt or blouse is a good option. Avoid bright colors, dark colors, and busy prints. The safest choice is to wear white, light blue, light gray, or another light color, providing the color doesn’t disappear into your backgroundfor example don’t wear white if a white wall is in the background.
The clothes you wear don’t have to be formal, but should be both professional and camera-friendly.
2. If you wear a blazer, leave the t-shirt in the drawer
3. Mind what you wear from the waist down
It can be tempting to not put too much focus on what youre wearing off camerafor example, to wear shorts or sweatsbut this is a mistake. Dress up head to toe to get into the right frame of mind and make the right impression.
4. Don’t over-accessorize
A final note
16 Polka Dot Chiffon Blouse
When it comes to zoom meetings, it doesnt get much better than this. This top is everything we recommend: its light blue, which is a refreshing color. It features a cute pattern. It has a partial v-neck which is feminine without being revealing. It features three-quarter length sleeves. Lastly, its not overly structured and fits loosely but well! We also love the addition of a bright pink lip which helps your features stand out.

Alright, alright, we know. This isnt exactly work meeting attire. But! There are plenty of fun occasions that crop up via the magical airwaves of Zoom, and when it boils down to it, its 2020 and we are pretty sure there are no rules anymore.
After all, where else are you going to wear your most slaying looks these days? Instead of letting them go to waste, why not whip them out and have some fun with them? On the one hand, your clients or coworkers might appreciate a healthy dose of fashion goodness. On the other, so will literally anyone you have a Zoom meeting with.
So, go ahead and liven up the party with a bright pink vinyl jacket or trenchcoat just skip the booties, as they will likely go unappreciated tucked under your desk. Youre welcome!
Choose Your Interview Outfit
As mentioned earlier, you should dress professionally the same way that you would for an in-person interview.
I recommend picking out an outfit ahead of time, too. Make sure its wrinkle-free and looks clean and new. By doing this ahead of time, youll have one less thing to worry about or stress over on the day of your interview.

2 White Blazer & Blouse
If you happen to have a well-decorated background then a white top and blazer are a great option. This is a chic, comfy, but stylish look that doesnt require constant fidgeting or adjusting in order to look good.
The v-neck is a great pick as well: it shows just enough of the neck to show people you have one, but its not so low-cut that it is unsuitable. A blazer is instantly business-casual. You can go for leather or vinyl leggings for a comfy fit and skip the shoes because there are in fact some benefits to video-conferencing and we dont intend to forget them.

Have A Tech Backup Plan
Since you’re relying on technology which can be finicky just when you need it most have your computer plugged in and charging.
You’ll also need a back-up plan, in case you have issues with your Wi-Fi internet connection. If you have an unlimited plan on your phone, you can connect your computer to its hotspot. Or you can download the Zoom app on your phone and have the meeting there. While this isn’t ideal, it should work.
Get Your Camera Up To Eye
Elevate your camera so that it sits at your eye-level. This way you are not looking down at me, or up at me neither are great. Plus if youre looking down, it tends to emphasise chins so pop a stack of books or a couple of boxes under your laptop or screen if your camera is too low!
I use this laptop table on top of my desk .
You can see in the images above the top picture my camera is at eye level, whilst the bottom one its slightly below. Its much more pleasant to be speaking to someone on the same level as you!

You can also prepare questions you have prior to the interview, so you definitely have something to ask. Appropriate questions could be about the company’s culture, this role’s responsibilities or what the interviewer enjoys most about the company.

How To Change Your Zoom Background
As you may know, Zoom enables you to use a premade background during video calls. Even if youve never tried Zoom virtual backgrounds, youve probably seen them in action in screenshots or videos.
Zooms virtual background feature is available for desktop clients and iOS. Sadly, if youre using Android or the browser version of the platform, youre out of luck .
Keep in mind that for the best possible results, Zoom recommends you use a green screen. Since most of us dont have one of those lying around, a clear wall with uniform coloring is a viable alternative.

- Be yourself! Dont let technology get in the way of showing your interviewer what makes you a unique asset to their team.

- Set your Zoom name to your formal name and add your pronouns.
- Set your camera at eye level so you dont need to slouch to make eye contact with your interviewer.
- Wear earbuds during your interview to ensure your voice can be heard clearly by the interviewer and likewise, you dont miss a word they say.
