Questions About Your Motivation And Goals

How to Answer Any Medical School Interview Question

  • What are your specific career plans and what led you to these decisions?
  • What do you feel is the purpose of medical school, and what do you hope to gain from this experience?
  • Why did you decide to choose medicine over other fields that involve helping others, such as nursing, social work, education, or psychology?
  • What will you do if youre not accepted to medical school this year? Do you have alternative career plans?
  • Where do you see yourself in 10-15 years?
  • What does success mean to you? After 20 years in the medical field, what sort of success would you like to have achieved?
  • Is there anything else you would like to share about you or your interest in becoming a doctor?
  • What Do I Do If I Feel I Have Been Asked A Question That Is Inappropriate

Although an interview typically is used to get to know an applicant better, some interviewers want to assess how well you function under stress and may purposely ask challenging questions to observe how you respond under pressure. How you communicate will be a critical part of the encounter however, this does not give an interviewer the right to ask you inappropriate questions in an attempt to challenge you during the interview. While interviewers are instructed by admissions officers and guided by federal statutes on what are unfair or discriminatory pre-admission inquiries, there may be an occasion when an interviewer asks an inappropriate question. You have the responsibility to report this to help prevent further occurrences. Medical schools have the responsibility to establish procedures that enable applicants to report such incidents in a confidential manner, and they should inform applicants of these procedures prior to interviews and assure them that reporting an incident will not bias the applicants evaluation.

What Specialty Are You Interested In

Be careful answering this question, as its a lot more dangerous than it seems. Its important that you appear open to learning all fields of medicine. If you do have a particular interest in a specific specialty because of family or a personal or academic experience, its okay to mention that, but make sure that you clearly demonstrate curiosity and an interest in all fields.

When Do You Hear Back From Medical Schools For Interviews: Uk

In the U.K., the majority of students apply to university through the UCAS application, which has a single, standardized due date for medical school applicants, usually in mid-October. Generally, UK schools do not have a rolling application process, so the wait is not nearly as arduous as it is for aspiring med students in the U.S., and there is a more straightforward timeline for interview invites and interviews.

For the most part, UK students will hear back from medical schools for interviews between November and March, with invitations usually coming out approximately 2 weeks before the interview. Many schools endeavor to send out invitations just before or after Christmas, though there are exceptions. For example, Buckingham has rolling interview invitations, and holds a few Selection Days each year, where MMIs take place. These generally take place in March/April, July, and September/October. Another exception is the University of Bristol, which sometimes begins sending medical school interview invitations a bit earlier, in mid-October. You can check with individual schools to see what their timeline for medical school interview invitations is, as these vary from institution to institution. The majority of students will know prior to the beginning of the new calendar year whether or not they have an interview.

Is It True That Medical Schools Reject Overqualified Applicants

In some cases, medical schools might reject candidates they believe will not attend their program, in order to give the spot to another student who is more likely to attend. This practice is called “yield protection” so that medical schools can preserve the real or perceived desirability of their program. That said, there is no way to know whether you will be turned down by a given school for being too qualified, so try not to heavily factor yield protection into your school list decisions.

Whats The Last Book You Read/enjoyed

This is quite similar to the previous question, as its another opportunity to demonstrate there is more to your life than the strict pursuit of medicine. The interviewer could ask you about a book, movie, or television show you enjoyed recently.

If you didnt enjoy the last book you read or program you watched, it could also be a good opportunity to flex your critical reasoning and analysis skills and discuss the specific reasons why you didnt enjoy it. Were the writers arguments weak? Did you not enjoy their writing style? Did you find the actors or plot unbelievable?

    Acceptance And Admissions Decisions

Making it to admissions decisions is the peak you have been striving for. It will mark the culmination of years of hard work. The feeling of acceptance is pure joy, as well as sheer relief. You will get there soon enough! Heres how to make the most of the last hurdle before medical school.

Medical schools begin sending acceptance letters mid-October. You may be contacted any time thereafter, so early applicants may receive acceptances in late October.

Applicants can hold multiple acceptances until the end of April. Each program will use school-specific procedures regarding acceptance deadlines. Applicants will likely be required to choose one program or respond to all acceptance offers shortly after April.

Another key component to take into account is the waitlist. Some schools may respond after an interview stating that you have not been accepted but rather placed on the waitlist. Though not the goal, being placed on the waitlist can lead to a positive outcome.

Waitlist acceptances can occur any time during the application season, but do not be surprised if they occur late. After the end of April, students will have to give up their multiple acceptances in favor of one, so you may receive an acceptance offer from the waitlist after this time.

How Would You Answer A Family Member If They Asked You To Share A Patient’s Private Information

This question is an example of a medical ethics question. Interviewers ask about ethics in an attempt to determine your commitment to integrity and your understanding of medical policies. To answer this question, you would need to understand the basic principles of patient confidentiality. When preparing for your medical school interview, it could be beneficial to familiarize yourself with common ethical dilemmas that healthcare professionals face.

Example:”If sharing the information they are asking for would violate the doctor/patient confidentiality agreement, I would politely tell them that I am not at liberty to discuss that topic in detail. If they are upset or confused, I would explain the nature of patient confidentiality and I would offer them any non-confidential information that I have concerning the patient.”
