What Is A Thank

How to Write a Thank You Email After the Interview & WOW Them!

A subject line is the information you type into the subject field of a message of thanks before emailing the hiring agent who interviewed you for a job. While the subject line only includes a few words, developing it is a key step for interviewees due to several reasons, including:

  • The hiring agent sees it first. The subject line is the first section that hiring managers see of your thank-you email, and they can see it before opening your message. If you made a good impression in your interview, seeing the subject line can be an effective reminder that communicates your professionalism and enthusiasm to the recruiter even if he or she is too busy to read your message immediately.
  • It can help you stand out from the crowd. Interviewers often have full inboxes with messages from job seekers, company emails, and messages from mailing lists. Consequently, its easy for a recruiter to miss an email in the inbox clutter. A great subject line can differentiate your thank-you email from other messages and motivate the recipient to read it quickly.
  • It can help you to build a relationship. An engaging subject line in a timely thank-you email can build rapport with the interviewer by capturing his or her attention, starting a conversation, and further solidifying the good impression you made at the interview.

Show That Youre Appreciative

After your greeting, its always best to start with an expression of gratitude. Thank your interviewer for taking the time to meet with you, and for considering you for the position. Remember to be genuine and include the specific job title, as employers or hiring managers may be assessing applicants for multiple positions at once.

And, if you have anything else you want to thank your interviewer for, you can do that here too.

Tips For Writing Thank You Emails

When in doubt, look to these five key elements to include in every thank you email:

  • Use the persons name. The best thank you emails are personalized and sent to one individual. Dont send one generic email out to multiple people, and dont send it without a personalized greeting like Dear Robert or Hi Robert. If you interviewed with multiple people, send a separate, customized email to each.
  • A brief sentence showing appreciation for their time and thanking them for meeting with you.
  • A comment on something specific that you enjoyed speaking with them about. Customize this part and make sure they know this email is written just for them, based on the conversation you had. This can also help remind them of a highlight from your interview.
  • Reaffirm your interest in the role. Tell them youre excited by what you learned in the interview, and that youre eager to hear about the next steps. If youd like, you can also remind them of why you feel youre a great fit for the job.
  • Dont forget to include any information or materials they might have requested during your interviews, like availability for start dates, or additional work samples from your portfolio.

    Formatting Tips & Tricks

There are an infinite number of ways you can write a thank-you letter. And while theres no one right way to do it, there are a few tips and tricks you can keep in mind while drafting your note.

    Email vs. Handwritten

Handwritten letters have a certain charm, but in most cases, a thank-you email is the best choice. Why? For one, an emailed thank-you can arrive instantaneously, while a postmarked note can take days to arrive. For another, handwritten letters might feel like a bit much. So when in doubt, send an email. Exceptions could occur if a) youre close enough that you can simply drop off a handwritten letter, b) youre applying to a very traditional or old-school organization and c) if you have a prior relationship with an interviewer .

    Length

Dont feel pressured to send a five-paragraph essay thank-yous should be short and sweet. Just as you dont want to spend too much time writing one, your interviewers dont want to spend too much time reading one. After all, theyve got their own jobs to stay on top of. Make your thank-you letter long enough to cover everything you need to say, but short enough that it only ends up being a few sentences long.

    Voice & Tone

When it comes to writing thank-you letters, professionalism is the name of the game. Avoid slang, typos, excessive exclamation points, emojis, etc. But you dont need to sound so formal that you come off as stiff. Opt for clear, concise language, not the longest word you can find in the thesaurus.

Its always great to create a conversation during an interview, instead of having it be more of a Q& A. Itll highlight any topic that was discussed in the interview unique to you. It was such a nice surprise to meet a fellow Trojan.
