How To Ask For Interview Feedback

Unfortunately The Team Felt You Were Not A Cultural Fit

How To Ask For Interview Feedback

The goal of experienced HRs is to reduce employee turnover. One of the many strategies for that is selecting people whose personalities and work styles will fit and/or complement those of other team members.

If you received this type of feedback it can mean two things:

  • Or they thought that you might not enjoy their workplace culture .

In both cases, you shouldnt take this personally. Some people thrive in fast-paced environments others dont. Next time around, try to put a greater emphasis on your soft skills and ability to adapt to different work styles.

Demonstrate Your Sincere Interest In Constructive Feedback

After the introduction in your feedback request letter, you can write:

I am writing to request any feedback that you might have for me based on my application and interview. Any suggestions or observations that you are willing to share will be instrumental in my professional development, and will help me determine where to put my focus.

The above statement is genuine, and an HR practitioner will more than likely take the time to craft a genuine response to your request.

How To Send An Engaging Follow

After a job interview, it’s only natural to want an update on the hiring process, particularly if you feel it went well. However, there are several potential pitfalls to avoid when sending a follow-up email after the interview. If you come across as pushy, sloppy or too informal then you could damage your chances of landing the job.

The Interviewer Kept Going Through Your Resume Over And Over

Its normal for an interviewer to ask, Walk me through your resume, or look through the document while asking questions about your prior responsibilities.

However, if they kept looking at your resume and asking you about the same piece of experience over and over, they might have had concerns about how your skills would fit their job and team.

It could also be a sign that the interviewer was new or inexperienced, though. So if this happened in an initial interview with HR, or with someone who is lower down in the companys structure, it might not be a sign that things went badly.

How You Should Ask For Feedback

Always Get/Give Interview Feedback, It Matters

Youre asking someone to:

  • Potentially have an uncomfortable conversation.
  • Take the time in general to have a conversation with someone theyre not hiring.
  • This means youll want to approach the conversation in a way that is gracious, open and not entitled.

First, thank the interviewer for their time and consideration. Then give them the option of providing feedback . Something along the lines of, If you do have any feedback for me, Id love to use it to make myself a stronger candidate for the future is a good way to approach it. If you dont tread lightly, you could come off as sounding defensive or basically arguing, Why didnt you hire me for this job?

When You Have An Update For Them

How to Request Feedback After an Interview

Your job search cant stop to wait for one employer to respond. If you have an update, such as a job offer from a different company, you may want to let your interviewer know. This could be to let them know that you are withdrawing from consideration, or it could be to use the job offer as a negotiating tactic.

    Hi Catherine,

I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to interview for the Customer Success Manager position last Monday.

Since our meeting, I have received an offer for a similar position at a different company. While their offer is appealing, I am especially interested in the work your company is doing and I would love to hear back from you before I respond to their offer.

Please let me know if there are any updates regarding the status of my application.

I am very enthusiastic about the prospect of working with you and if there are any concerns I could clear up, dont hesitate to reach out.

    Thanks,Taylor Smith

Don’t Miss: What Questions Will Be Asked In A Job Interview

When You Should Ask For Feedback

The more a company has gotten to know you, the more helpful the feedback will be. If a company turns you down after a phone interview or initial screen, theyve only spent a limited amount of time getting to know you. Chances are there was something on the surface that made you not the right match for that job whether it be your skill set, a culture fit or many other reasons. No harm in asking, but dont be surprised if the answer isnt very insightful and seems pretty basic.

Id say the most meaningful feedback youre going to get is when youve gotten to a second or third round of interviews and then get rejected.

If youve gotten past the first round, it means your skills and work experience are viable for the job so the reason for not getting the job could be a little more interesting. Knowing that reason is a lot more likely to help you the next time youre interviewing for a similar role.

A week ago you interviewed for a job with a local technology company. You spent three hours answering and asking questions with interviewer after interviewer. You figure you did pretty well, so you’re surprised to find the following message from the company’s recruiter in your email inbox the next day:

“We appreciate your interest in our company and thank you for the time you spent interviewing with us, and giving us the opportunity to learn about your skills and accomplishments. However, we have identified a more highly qualified individual for the role. We wish you the best of luck on your job search and your future endeavors.”

You thought you nailed the interview. And, there’s nothing of value in that rejection letter that provides you any insight into the company’s decision to cut you loose. Is it okay to reach out to the recruiter or the hiring manager to ask why they took a pass on you?

Absolutely, you can ask for feedback. Just don’t expect a meaningful answer.

Or for that matter, any answer at all.

Why don’t companies usually share useful information about the interview with you? There are several reasons:

So what do you do if you would still like to get feedback on your interview?

What To Do Next In Your Job Search:

Whether you think your interview went well or badly, the best thing you can do is keep job searching and applying to positions .

    Keep your momentum going.

The biggest mistake I see job seekers make is they get one or two interviews scheduled and stop applying for jobs, and they just hope those first couple of employers that they talk to will be interested.

This is a big gamble and often leads to job seekers going months without a job, because theyre waiting and doing nothing each time one employer shows interest.

So keep sending out your resume to employers and applying to relevant positions. Dont stop applying for jobs until youre sure youre being offered a role that you will accept.

This will lead to a faster job search and help you feel much more relaxed, too. Youll have more prospects and more interviews, meaning less pressure with each one. You dont need one single interviewer to be interested when youre going on five interviews in a week.

Youll seem much more confident in each interview because of this. So thats why I encourage you to keep sending out your resume.

You can always cancel an interview or two if you decide to accept an offer, but its better to have too many opportunities than too few.

Step one of learning how to ask for feedback after an interview is to figure out where you’re going astray. Ask yourself:

    • Are you interviewing for the right jobs? Just because you’ve been chosen for an interview doesn’t mean you are a viable candidate.

    • If you are indeed interviewing for the right kinds of jobs, how prepared have you been?

While these two points may seem obvious, they explain a large portion of poor performance in interviews. Also, remember that you are being judged on different facets of your performance, such as:

    • your interviewing manners and interview attire

    • your level of preparedness

    • the quality of your answers and how well they match the job requirements

    • the way you deliver your interview answers, as well as your confidence and poise under pressure

    • your overall package

Mistakes To Avoid When Sending Post Interview Thank You Emails

Now you know the basics of how to send a great thank you email after the interview. Lets cover a few mistakes to avoid now, though.

Some of this will be review if you read everything above, but I want to make sure you dont do anything that could cost you the job!

First mistake: waiting too long to send it. You really want to send this within 24 hours after your interview.

Next, dont ever copy and paste the same exact email to send to multiple people. They will compare and it looks sloppy/lazy. It takes a lot away from the impact your thank you email will have.

Dont ever put multiple people in the To field of the email either. You should be sending one email to one recipient at a time.

    Otherwise, it looks lazy/rushed.

And another big mistake: Thinking you dont need to send an interview thank you email because the person you met wasnt the official hiring manager.

Id recommend sending one any time you had a face-to-face interview with someone.

Everyones opinion can count and the hiring manager can ask everyone what they thought of you. Dont pick and choose who deserves a thank you email. Send it to everyone youve met face to face and play it safe!

One more minor mistake: Not asking for business cards after you meet each person during a day of interviewing.

Getting business cards from each person you met with during the interview is the easiest way to keep track of names and email addresses so you can thank them later via email.

Is It Best To Send A Thank You Email Or A Note/letter

High risk work licence: Interview feedback sample email to hr

I get asked this frequently: Whats your opinion on sending a thank you email, versus mailing a thank you letter after your interview?

For most people, I recommend email. There are three reasons why:

  • You can make sure it gets delivered at the exact time you want
  • Its easier and takes less time
  • Its more modern and simpler for the company
  • However, in specific cases, you may want to send a thank you letter in the mail after an interview.

A paper thank you note/letter might be better if youre in a very traditional industry . Or if youre interviewing for a very high-level position .

But for most job seekers, I recommend sending a thank you email.

One more option to consider: You can write a personalized thank you card and then send a picture of it digitally, either in a LinkedIn message or in an email. Thats a good way to stand out and give a more personalized feel to a digital message.
