What Motivates You To Work

How Many Questions Should You Ask In An Interview? – Coaching Moment

It is a simple question but requires the interviewee to exhibit a great amount of thought and often unlocks valuable discussions from a candidate looking internally for what truly motivates them.

If they only answer at the surface level with something like I relish a challenge, this can convey that they are a less-than exceptional candidate.

You may need to probe further do extract a deeper understanding of their motivations.

Can You Provide An Example Of A Time You Worked With A Coworker You Didnt Get Along With

In my last position, my boss partnered my coworker Sarah and I together to work on a project. We often disagreed on how much time and detail we need to devote to aspects of the project. I realized Sarah had a different approach than I did so I allocated time for us to sit down with one another and get to the heart of our differences. Once I understood our strengths and weaknesses, we were able to more efficiently allocate our time. We collaborated and assigned tasks based on our strengths.

How you answer this question helps employers identify signs of a bad coworker. Its likely you wont like every single person you work with. Employers want to know that you can still be professional and respectful even when youre working with someone you dont like. Much like the previous question, be diplomatic in your response. Focus on the positives and dont take too much time explaining the flaws of a previous coworker. Provide examples of effective conflict resolution. Use examples such as honest open communication, acknowledging your own flaws, and finding compromises. Ensure your answer has a positive response and highlights your empathy and willingness to work through difficult situations.

There Are Some Things You Can Do To Make The Transition Easier:

  • Group the questions according to topic. For example, if you want to ask about writing skills, list all these questions together. Then, if a candidate answering one question touches on another question in your list, you can easily say Actually, I was planning to ask you about that. Tell me more about. This applies to similar skills as well for example, list organizational interview questions and leadership interview questions one after the other.
  • Ask prompting questions. Candidates will use their experiences, knowledge and thoughts to back up their answers. Most of the time, youll have something to ask about those thats relevant to the role. For instance, you can say something like You mentioned that you did this project with a team of designers. We actually have a great team here that youll be working closely with should you be hired. How would you feel about this?
  • React like you would in a social situation. If somebody told you at a party that theyre currently working on a cutting-edge face recognition program, how would you react? You might say something like That sounds fascinating. Tell me more or Whats the program like? Its OK to respond this way during an interview, as long as you make sure the conversation doesnt stray from the job youre hiring for.

So, what is this frequently mis-answered query?

Do you have any questions for me?

This may be the most important interview question you answer. And youd be surprised at the number of people who reply, Nope!

Thats a huge missed opportunity. You should never reply no to this question. Its your last chance to make a good impression, and its the interviewers way of gauging your level of interest in the job. A Cliche Interview Questions

You might have noticed that many of the common questions to ask in an interview are missing. These are questions were all familiar with such as Whats your greatest weakness? or Why should we hire you? The biggest problem with these questions is that theyre some of the most asked interview questions and candidates likely have prepared their answers ahead of time. There is plenty of content online for candidates instructing them how to answer these questions, meaning you may not get a truthful answer at all.

Plus, you cant be sure what exactly the answers to these questions indicate. Granted, if someone says I dont have any weaknesses or offers the covert brag of Im too hard-working, youll know they may not have the attitude youre looking for. But, most candidates will likely take the middle road naming a weakness thats small and unimportant. So, how do you compare answers of different candidates? You probably cant at least not confidently.

So, every time youre thinking of asking a well-worn, cliched question, consider a refreshing alternative not to catch the candidate off-guard, but to get a more genuine answer from them. Here are some examples:

Old question: Why should we hire you?

Better alternative: If you were hired, how do you think you could help with this project?

Old question: What is your greatest weakness?

Better alternative: Describe a time when you failed in your previous job.

Old question: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Just As With Questions Asked By The Interviewer To The Candidate:

BEST QUESTIONS TO ASK AT THE END OF AN INTERVIEW (Including the Question The Boosts Your Chances )

Good questions are open-ended, and thus cannot be answered with a “yes” or “no.”

Better questions are behavioral: they ask how things are done or have happened in the past, because current and past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.

The least useful questions are hypothetical, such as “what would you do if…?” The better way to get a useful answer is to ask the behavior “what have you done when….?” However, hypothetical questions can make sense if asking about something a person or organization has never experienced the answer would at least exhibit the thought process.
