When reviewing motivational interviewing training programs, we considered the largest and most well-known training programs in the United States. Then, we evaluated how their training programs are delivered, their accreditations, their affiliations, and their costs. We also looked for programs that offer continuing education or continuing medical education credits, because many professionals are required to earn credits on a regular basis.

Because finding the ideal training program is often based on personal preference, as well as your employer’s guidelines, it’s important that you evaluate the merits of each program against your own set of needs and requirements. The Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers is an international organization committed to promoting high-quality motivational interviewing practice and training. MINT maintains a website with information regarding MI research, practice, and training at the MINT website. MINT is made up of professionals from a range of backgrounds, including counselors, psychologists, physicians, nurses, dieticians, corrections officers, and more.

In order to join MINT, or become a MINTie, an individual must participate in a MINT or MINT-endorsed Training of New Trainers . These 3-day training are typically held annually and alternative between North America and other locations. The trainings are conducted in a workshop format and focus specifically on strategies to effectively train and disseminate MI. After completing a TNT, members are required to pay annual dues. Members receive access to special sections of the MINT website, can participate in the Annual MINT Forum, which is typically held right after each years TNT, can participate in the MINT listserv, and can identify as a member of MINT and be listed as a MINT trainer on the MINT website. Research shows that two-day workshops can produce small but statistically significant learning effects. However, skills deteriorate without opportunities for continued learning. Technology Assisted Motivational Interview is “used to define adaptations of MI delivered via technology and various types of media”. Clinical Conversations Training Program

This program offers MI as one of seven conversation topics from the Network of the National Library of Medicine. While the training program is geared towards those in a clinical setting, its intended to support training efforts around health literacy and related concepts and can be relevant in a WIC setting. The program is structured to allow trainers and training managers to embed brief trainings on conversation topics into regular meetings or training sessions, with each module under a topic designed to take about 10-15 minutes to deliver.

    How Mi Progresses Through The Coaching Experience

    There are four umbrellas of MI. Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning . Its important to note that not every MI session will include all four phases or proceed linearly. These four phases describe, in general, how the client-coaching relationship is formed.

    Step 1: Engaging or the process of building rapport and taking initial steps to build a trust-based relationship with a client.

    Step 2: Focusing or setting the agenda for the coaching experience. This involves identifying what the client wishes to achieve.

    Step 3: Evoking or exploring the clients motivation to make a change.

    Step 4: Planning or the process of collaboratively putting a plan of action into place. This occurs once the client has decided to make a change.

    Why Motivational Interviewing

    Motivational interviewing is the only standardized, evidence-based approach for facilitating behaviour change.

    MI is used in multiple settings around the world, including alcohol and drug rehabilitation, corrections and probation, behavioural health, youth work, medical settings and of course health care.

    • Refrain from the expert trap: Although a trainer should have expertise in MI, pose questions to the group to draw out what practitioners may already know.
    • Allow time: When posing questions or setting exercises, give practitioners time to process the content and respond.
    • Listen carefully: Reflect participants contributions to reinforce learning.
    • Affirm: Look for practitioner strengths and effort.
    • Summarize: Consolidate learning with occasional summaries of the content and learning.
    • Support practitioner autonomy: Acknowledge the right to decide to learn MI .
    • Normalize ambivalencefor learning and change: Express empathy for practitioners when they express discomfort, disagreement, anxiety, or being overwhelmed by new ways of working.
    • Be ready to roll with practitioner push back: Resist the righting reflex and the urge to tell practitioners they must or have to do something. Instead, model MI, listen carefully, come alongside, and respect autonomy.
    • Be prepared to demonstrate: While planned demonstrations are helpful, brief demonstrations can also be used to illustrate points so that participants can see and feel how something might work in practice.
