Dont be shy about following up if you need clarification. If an interviewer asks you a question and does not give enough information for you to provide a solid answer, ask for more context. We ask a lot of questions at Amazon, said Jackson. We want our candidates to feel comfortable with this because thats the environment and culture we actually have.
Quickhow many sides does a circle have? How do you lift an elephant with one hand? And what was the presidents name in 1992? If youre gearing up for an interview, you might think you need to prepare for trick questions like these. At Amazon, thats not the case. Though tech companies have a reputation for throwing out brain teasers during the interview process, we do things a bit differently here. We want to help candidates put their best foot forward, said Stacy Milgate, Senior Client Lead, Amazon Web Services. Our interview process is geared toward finding true examples of the work youve performed. Our candidate-first approach to interviewing means well do our best to ask fair questions and provide tools and resources to help you. However, its still important to do your research and prep work. Interview With Hiring Manager
This portion is either in person or via a phone call with the hiring manager, who would be your direct manager. The hiring manager is on your side. They have the biggest pain point, meaning that they really need to hire someone. Itâs in their best interest to be nice to you, and they usually are. That doesnât mean you wonât get tough questions. However, I ï¬nd that this ï¬rst meeting with the hiring manager is going to be one of the main chances where you get to ask speciï¬c questions about the role.
For this interview, you should be ready to sell yourself. Prepare fewer questions about the company culture, and more questions about what kind of goals the manager has, what projects you would work on immediately, and their expectations for the role. The hiring manager will usually be the âeasiestâ interviewer you come in contact with. Your conversation will likely be about the role itself and your career goals, along with what relevant experience you have for the job. You should use this meeting as a chance to learn as much as possible about the job. You want to ï¬gure out: What would I be doing on a daily basis and what will it be like working with this manager? Here are some good questions to ask them in the first meeting:

What Happens Behind The Scenes
Your recruiter is leading the process and taking you from one stage to the next. Here’s what happens at each of the stages described above:
- After the phone screens, your recruiter decides to move you to the onsite or not, depending on how well you’ve done up to that point
- After the onsite, each interviewer files their notes into the internal system, grades you and makes a hiring recommendation
- The “Debrief” brings all your interviewers together and is led by the Bar Raiser, who is usually the most experienced interviewer and is also not part of the hiring team. The Bar Raiser will try to guide the group towards a hiring decision. It’s rare, but they can also veto hiring even if all other interviewers want to hire you.
- You get an offer. If everything goes well, the recruiter will then give you an offer, usually within a week of the onsite but it can sometimes take longer
It’s also important to note that recruiters and people who refer you have little influence on the overall process. They can help you get an interview at the beginning, but that’s about it.

Engineering And Technical Interviews
The leadership principles and your culture ï¬t are critical to getting hired, but the greater your technical expertise, the more ï¬exibility Amazon will have on the âcultureâ piece. Amazon will give you either a surprise test during the interview or an actual engineering/ coding test . If you are applying for any position that requires the use of Excel , theyâll probably test your pivot table skills for 20-30 minutes as part of the interview process. Be prepared. If you are applying for a business analyst position, for example, they probably wonât tell you if there is a test, but depending on how technical it is you can at least expect they will test your SQL skills in the interview.
This may not necessarily require you to use any database management system, but will come in the form of a question like, âIf you have two SQL database tables that are not joined together, how would you create another table to join them?â For any positions that require programming skills, you can expect the coding test to come at the start of the process. This means it will either be your ï¬rst or second interview, right after speaking to an HR person/recruiter. This is not going to be an extremely complex test that will require hours of your time. It covers the fundamentals of the language so you should brush up on the basics. You can chat with a technical interview coach on Carrus to practice and review your code .
