Before jumping ship to a new company, you inevitably need to test the waters during the job interview. The purpose of an interview is twofold: It shows the employer what you can do for the company, and it gives you an opportunity to assess whether your qualifications and career ambitions align with the position. Job interviews can be quick – sometimes lasting as little as a half hour – or long, if you meet separately with two or more people from the company. When both parties listen intently and speak accurately, there is much to gain from the job interview process.

This Ontario Company Will Pay You For A Job Interview And Here’s How Much

A Canadian company is attracting attention for a new policy that began this month where they will pay candidates who are offered a job interview.

FoodShare Toronto, a food-centric non-profit organization, said as of March 1 they will pay job applicants $75 per interview they conduct with the company.

“I think employers have gotten off scot free for far too long by expecting candidates to bear the costs of an interview,” FoodShare Toronto CEO Paul Taylor told CTV News Toronto on Friday. “We recognize that people sometimes have to take time off work to go for an interview. People have to commute, pay for transit or get childcare and we think employers should and should be paying for that.”

Taylor said the company will also pay candidates, at the rate of pay for the job they’re applying to, if they’re required to do any presentation or assignment as part of the interview process.

Taylor said paying candidates $75 per interview not only shows respect, but can also be the difference between an unemployed candidate being able to put food on the table that week.

“I feel like capitalism has really given workers a raw deal,” Taylor said. “And I think that’s one of the things that we’re also pushing back on. We want to inspire as much change as possible because I think many of the things that we’ve been convinced are unchangeable are absolutely changeable.”

As an organization working on challenging food insecurity, we recognize that sometimes people who are showing up for an interview are people who may be unemployed, says Paul Taylor, Executive Director of not-for-profit FoodShare Toronto, whose website lists centering food justice as a guiding purpose. We all have responsibilities to support the creation of healthy people and healthy communities, 1 says Taylor, whose organization also offers a minimum wage of $24/hour.

Whether the plan is practical or destined to become widespread is open for debate, but its popularity is not. Taylors March 7th tweet announcing the policy has been liked over 7,000 times, with more than 1,200 shares.

How Will I Get Paid For Surveys

After putting it lots of time and effort into completing the paid survey to the highest standard, you will want to know how and when you will receive your earnings. Most paid online surveys sites offer multiple payment options to their users, such as via PayPal, receiving an electronic or paper check or earning points that can be used for gift cards or prizes which may have a higher value.

It is important that you are aware that when it comes to receiving your earnings, many of the top survey sites will ask you to achieve a minimum amount before you are able to receive any of the money, prizes or gift cards.

In addition, you should also understand that some platforms may not offer you the opportunity to get paid for surveys unless you live in a particular country. For example, most will primarily focus on countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United States, and you may find that some only extend this to a few other European countries or more of an international community. Therefore when it comes to considering how to get paid for surveys, you need to ensure that the platform or organization that you use will pay based on where you live.

Addressing The Power Dynamics Of The Job Interview Process

Labour practices such as minimum wage are often seen as radical when first introduced, only to eventually become commonplace Taylor believes that paid interviews may be no exception. He believes that companies have taken the efforts of interviewees for granted and is hopeful for change.

Taylor says that the power imbalance between employer and employee is evident in the very nature of the interview.

A group of people sitting at a table asking questions, one after the other, of a candidate, and then leaving a few minutes at the end for them to ask any questions, says Taylor, who prefers a more balanced approach. I often think about interviewing almost like dating, he says, calling it an opportunity to get to know each other, not one person grilling the other.1

Paid Interview Policy Hits A Nerve

While many companies may be in no rush to follow suit, Taylor believes that the concept of paid interviews is one that resonates.

I think so many people have gone through this experience where youve put so much time and energy and hope, he says, noting that some job searchers apply to hundreds of jobs. Sometimes you dont even hear back, he says I think it just hit a nerve.

Taylor believes that balancing the scales will require candidates to stand up, employers to step up, and government to pass legislation. According to him the reward is worth the payout. $75 will not break our budget, he says.1

How To Avoid Paid Surveys Scams:

As the Internet has become an increasingly part of daily life, scams have become more difficult to recognize. Unfortunately paid surveys are no exception. Cybercriminals can set up a website or survey quickly and easily. Instead of actually providing you with compensation, these sites obtain your personal details for fraudulent activity, and alarm bells should ring if you are asked to pay money in order to receive the opportunity to earn from paid surveys.

Here are some tips to help you avoid paid survey scams:

  • Ensure that you check all reviews before you sign up to a website, in order to confirm that it is reputable.
  • Ensure that if a paid survey has an unusually long qualification process, that this is avoided.
  • Remember that surveys should only ever be paying you you should never have to pay money in order to complete them.
  • If a minimum pay out seems highly unobtainable then you should not complete them.
  • We all know the saying If something is too good to be true, then it normally is so please bare that in mind.

We ensure that sites must offer:

  • Free membership
  • A sign up process that is simple
  • A user experience that is good
  • Surveys that can be completed
  • Cash or redeemable points rewards
  • A Privacy Policy and a Terms of Service
  • An easy and clear way to unsubscribe from mailings
  • The opportunity to contact support if needed

Alternatives To A Working Interview

Respondent.io Review: $100-700/hr for your Opinion?

There are different ways to assess a candidates skills and working style. You could consider partnering with a temp agency to help fill roles without the commitment of a full-time employee.

You could also pivot to a take-home assessment, simulation, or technical skills assessment. Make sure youre explicit that the take-home project is just that: a take-home project. Be clear about your expectations, including how much time the candidate should spend on the project. Also, be clear that this project is for sample purposes only .

Is User Interviews Worth It

Is User Interviews worth your time? Its certainly not passive income, but for the work involved, Id say the pay rate is pretty strong.

For the remote research projects, theres no commuting time or cost, which is an advantage over some other side hustles.

A few drawbacks to consider would be:

  • Youre not getting paid for time spent doing screener surveys. These are generally short , but can add up and get frustrating if you dont get selected.
  • Theres a limit to how much you can reasonably expect to make on User Interviews. Given the nature of this side hustle, its not going to replace your day job salary.
  • Most studies only pay out in via gift cards. Again, Amazon credit is almost as good as cash in our house, so thats a non-issue for me.

Still, User Interviews is an interesting and viable way to make some extra money.

Finally, consider the opportunity cost. What else could you be doing with your time?

If youre confident you could earn better than the $50-200/hour these projects pay doing something else, by all means, go do that instead!

Types Of Studies On User Interviews

User Interviews specializes in remote market research. This means that most conversations take place over the phone or via webcam video chat.

There seems to be more of a business-to-business focus on the site. By that, I mean I tend to see more studies related to specialized work software, skills, or experience than general consumer studies.

That said, theres still a healthy variety of projects on User Interviews a non-techy person can qualify for.

The four main types of studies are:

  • 1-on-1 Interviews
  • In this section, Ill give a brief explanation of each.

Pay Job Candidates For Interviews Say What

Independent LinkedIn Specialist – Trainer, Author, Career Development Practitioner, Gigster, Business, Social Media Marketing Consultant, Network

By Sue Ellson BBus MIML MAHRI MPC CDAA ASA WV SPN AH

I was listening to a great webinar run by Kenneth Lang for the Wayne, New Jersey, Passaic County job support/networking group today and it was mentioned by one of the guests that job candidates should be paid for their time to attend interviews.

I immediately thought – YES, YES, YES.

Let me tell you why. I have been in recruitment, both within a company and working for a recruitment agency and I can assure you there are many practices within the recruitment role that could do with some improvement.

For a start, why would you drag more than six people in for a job interview for one position? If your recruitment skills cannot reduce your ‘best’ candidates to a reasonable number per position, I would suggest that you need to improve your technique.

In the second selection phase, online assessments, phone interviews, online video interviews can all be used to quickly go through a filtered list of job applicants.

But for the third stage of ‘possible candidates,’ interrupting the lives of more than six people is a waste of time, energy and an awful lot of money – from the agency, company or job candidate perspective.

Are you valuing the candidate’s time? If you have chosen more than six applicants as candidates, then I would argue, absolutely not!
