How to Use Motivational Interviewing with Personal Training Clients

The notion of the counselor drawing out a client’s ideas rather than imposing their own opinions is based on the belief that motivation to change comes from within. As such, it cannot come from the counselor.

No matter how much the counselor might want a person to change their behavior, it will only happen if the individual also wants to change. So, it is the counselor’s job to “draw out” their client’s true motivations for this change. Once these motivators are identified, the client can use them to make the recovery process easier or to help them keep going when they want to give up.

About the Instructor

Theresa Regan, Ph.D., is an adult neuropsychologist , parent of an amazing child on the autism spectrum, and certified autism specialist with the IBCCES. She brings validation, hope, and purpose to individuals and their families living on the autism spectrum.

With this mission at its core, she founded and directs the OSF HealthCare Adult Diagnostic Autism Clinic in central Illinois. Her books include Understanding Autism in Adults and Aging Adults and Understanding Autistic Behaviors.     Individual study and self-training offer the most convenient method of learning how to do motivational interviewing. This method typically uses study materials, such as books, workbooks, and online reading along with training videotapes. While convenient, much of the learning process for MI happens while youre doing motivational interviewing. With self-training, it can be difficult to develop the real-world skills needed to be an effective interviewer. However, you can still obtain a motivational interviewing certificate through self-training.

    What Mi Training Involves

    To begin your training journey in motivational interviewing, Miller and Moyers suggest that an openness to the collaborative, evocative, and client-centered spirit of MI can be important to how easily you learn it. Trainees need to be willing to explore the perspective that people are experts in their lives and will typically move in a positive direction when given the right support .

    Gaining competency in client-centered counseling approaches is central to MI, including accurate empathy, reflective listening, affirming, reflecting, and summarizing .

    The next steps involve learning to pick up on change talk and sharpening your perception of elements of clients speech that show a willingness, need, or motivation to change. Once youve mastered this, you can learn to reinforce and elicit change talk, while also responding in ways that reduce counter-change talk .

    Rolling with resistance is another key skill youll acquire. Rather than challenging or opposing resistance, which can actually generate more pushback, youll learn to roll with it. This could involve affirming the clients autonomy and reflecting their resistant speech with empathy .

    When a change plan is in place, the therapists next job is to help cement the clients commitment at the appropriate time, paying close attention to and eliciting the clients commitment talk .

    The Association for Psychological Therapies offers the following levels of accreditation for practitioners of Motivational Interviewing, intended to provide a clear and transparent record of the level competence you are maintaining and to be of high relevance to employers.

    The accreditation is given weight by over 125,000 professionals having attended APT courses and thereby gained APT accreditation in their course-subject at levels ranging from 1 to 5, from introductory to advanced.

    You might consider levels 1 to 3 as being where you are acquainting yourself with Motivational Interviewing. At levels four and five you might reasonably describe yourself as specialising in Motivational Interviewing.     What Should You Look For In A Motivational Interviewing Training Program

    When looking for a motivational interviewing training program, pay close attention to the qualifications of the instructor as well as the organization. Both should be skilled in using motivational interviewing as a practitioner and as a trainer. They also should be up-to-date on training themselves and be able to model and demonstrate the skills needed to practice motivational interviewing.

    Also, look at the learning objectives or goals of the training program to ensure they are in line with your goals. Another key element of evaluating motivational interviewing training programs is to determine what level of expertise the training is designed for. In other words, if you are a beginner, you don’t want to attend a training program designed for an expert.

    Finally, look for training programs that offer a variety of teaching methods, as well as plenty of opportunities to practice what you are learning. It is hard to get anything out of a program that only requires you to sit in front of a computer and listen to someone else talk. Consequently, look for programs that provide interactive quizzes or allow you to break out into small groups . The more that you interact with the training program and the others participating, the more information you will retain.
