Tell Me About Yourself
In polling hundreds of different companies & HR departments, this is by far one of the most frequently asked questions in any job interview. Your interviewer will use this as an icebreaker, ideally to put you at ease and get you speaking openly and honestly.
While you definitely want to be prepared for this question, you certainly dont want to make your answer sound memorized. Keep in mind, while this question may sound like an invitation to share your life story, you can be assured your interviewer has very little interest in hearing about everything youve ever done.
The person giving the interview has a job to do as well respect their time. Unless you are asked about something specific, focus on your education, your work history, relatable hobbies and outside interests, as well as your current situation.
Be sure to start chronologically and tell a linear story. Start where you feel is sensical, then work your way up to the present.
Have Some Examples Ready
While many candidates tell their interviewer that they posses certain desirable qualities, the proof as they say, is in the pudding. Spend some time in advance of your interview coming up with concrete examples of prior work achievements and how they demonstrate a desired ability. Be prepared for the recruiters questions and to anticipate them based on job position requirements. Instead of simply saying I am well organized, trying attaching an example or strategy. Dont Be Afraid To Close The Deal
Once the interview is over, the likelihood is both you and the interviewer have a good idea of where one another stand. As you stand up post interview and engage in a final handshake, be upfront. Confidence here can go a long way. If you believe you nailed the interview, be bold:Im going to be straight with you – I think that went really well and I think Id be a great asset here. Where do I stand as of now?. Alternatively, if you dont think it went wellyou probably have your answer already.

Are You Willing To Be On
What you want to hear: Hardships can happen at any time, and Case Managers may have to work beyond typical job hours. A willingness to work weekends, holidays, and be on call shows an understanding of the position and their desire to excel in patient care.
Red flag: Be cautious of a candidate who doesnt immediately recognize the importance of prioritizing patient care emergencies over personal commitments. Hesitation when answering this question is a red flag.

Questions To Ask The Employer
Interviewing is a two-way street. Often, nurses are so excited and nervous about answering questions well during their interview that they forget that they should ask questions to their potential future employers.
After all, how do you know if the job is an excellent fit unless you ask about the details that are important to you!
Most of the time, when you reach the end of your interview, employers will ask interviewees if they have any questions about the position. This is a great opportunity to show that you have done your research on their facility and expected job duties and demonstrate how excited you are about the position.
Depending on time, you may want to consider limiting your questions to two or three questions. Most nursing administrators set aside an allotted amount of time to interview each potential new hire, and you dont want to be disrespectful of their time.
Many of these questions may also be great to ask after you have the job and work 1:1 with a preceptor or other helpful nurses. Experienced nurses are great resources for questions once you get the job!

Sample Nurse Interview Questions: Time Management
Nurses are masters at multitasking – for example, managing multiple patients, administering medication on time while maintaining detailed notes. Tell stories about your punctuality, ability to meet deadlines and how you remain organized through it all.
1. Talk about a time you worked in a fast-paced setting. How do you prioritize tasks while maintaining excellent patient care?
Give an example of a time you had to prioritize your tasks quickly. Explain your thought process in detail and why you chose to complete the duties in such an order.
Working in an ICU setting is extremely fast-paced and it is essential to prioritize your tasks for the day. At the beginning of the shift, I make a to-do list with everything that needs to be accomplished. I put the must-do things at the top of the list and the things I would like to do at the bottom. Administering medications are placed at the top of the list and washing a patients hair is further down. While I would love to accomplish everything, it just isnt possible.
2. Describe your experience with a very ill patient who required a lot of your time. How did you manage this patients care while ensuring your other patients were adequately cared for?
Talk about the patients care and why they needed much of your time. What was the illness, trauma or injury? How did you ensure that this patient received quality care? How did you manage your other patients?

Sample Nurse Interview Questions: Adaptability
The nursing profession is one of constant urgency, crisis, and uncertainty. Tell stories of challenges and follow up with key takeaways and learned lessons.
1. Tell me about a time you were under a lot of pressure. What was going on, and how did you get through it?
Tell a story about a time you were stressed and under pressure to perform. Explain the situation and why you felt pressured. Describe step-by-step the actions you took to make it through the situation. What was the result? What did you learn? What might you do differently now?
I was the most senior nurse in the unit by over a decade. I had to not only handle my patient assignment but I also was to act as a resource to the other newer nurses on the unit. I had to make sure my time management was great as well as my ability to drop everything and help someone else. I had to stay organized otherwise I would not have been able to assist others.
2. Describe a time when your facility was undergoing some change. How did that impact you, and how did you adapt?
Talk about a time your facility changed. Maybe they were acquired by another facility. Perhaps they transitioned to a new computer system. Describe the change and the steps you took to adapt to such change.
3. Tell me about a time when you didnt know the answer to something at work? How did you go about finding the information?
5. Tell me about a time you failed. How did you deal with this situation?
I Like What Im Hearing But Weve Got A Ton Of Great Candidates Why Should We Hire You
An easy question to answer well with one caveat dont slam your fellow interviewees. On the one hand, you have an opportunity to really stand out from the pack. Alternatively, You shouldnt assume the skills of other applicants. Focus on your own strengths, and if the interviewer hasnt given you an opportunity to mention that one slam dunk quality about yourself, now would be the time.
Is there a wrong way to answer this question? Consider the responses below:

- I need the money
- Your office is really close to my house
- Ive always been interested in what you guys do
Notice any commonality here? All of these answers demonstrate a benefit to you. While every employer assumes that these sorts of things play in on some level, these are not the reasons they are going to hire you.
In summation, clearly illustrate what in specific has made you a good employee, and how you envision yourself contributing to and benefiting the company.

How Do You Deal With A Patient Who Is Upset
Patient care is the central focus of most healthcare employers. They need to know that you deal with patients appropriately before they decide to hire you. The best way to answer this question is to use a real-life experience that you have had with a patient who was upset in the past.
Example:”If a patient is upset, I listen to them before I respond with compassion and patience. I know that patients often get upset or frustrated when they are in pain or irritable because of their medications. What you want to hear: At some point, a patient in discomfort may react in frustration or anger. Does your candidate have the interpersonal and communication skills to calm the patient and get to the core issue? Depending on the situation, a great candidate with appropriate training will find ways to empathize with a patient and draw on the appropriate resources for appropriate assistance.
Red flag: Find someone who wont take things personally when engaging patients. This position requires working with people during extreme hardships, and emotions can often run high. A calm, compassionate, and professional demeanor works best in this role.

Speak about specifics that relate to the position you are applying for. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can.
If you are being asked this question from your employer then you can explain your experience. Tell the employer what responsibilities you were performing during your job. You can tell what programs you developed and what modules you worked on. What were your achievements regarding different programs.

Are You Willing To Work Weekends And Be On
As a case manager, your duties go far beyond the typical nine-to-five work schedule, especially if you work as a patient liaison in a hospital. There may be times when you need to explain the options to patients in emergency situations. Your willingness to work weekends and holidays as well as remain only a telephone call away will show your employer that you are ready to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I understand that weekends and holidays are part of the job description. I know that patient illnesses and injuries do not wait for convenient times to occur, so I will be available as needed at any time is a phenomenal answer.

This question is aimed at assessing how you would handle a poorly performing nurse.
Tip #1: State how you would deal with cases of underperformance

I would begin by talking to the nurse to understand the problem. If underperformance is caused by carelessness or complacency, I would issue a warning and make the nurse understand that such acts wont be tolerated. Otherwise, I would create a performance enhancement program and implement it to help the nurse enhance performance.

I lead by example rather than commanding my subordinates. I make sure to explain expectations, coach and train nurses, and motivate them to remain productive. I also listen to their needs and concerns and address them accordingly.

What Are Your Weaknesses
Another tricky one. The purpose of this question is to see how you view and evaluate yourself.
One the one hand, if you suggest you dont have any weaknesses, your interviewer will almost certainly see you as a lair, egotistical, or both.
Dont fall into the trap of trying to present a positive skill in disguise as a weakness, like I work too hard or I am a perfectionist. Any experienced interviewer will see through this in a heartbeat.
Additionally, revealing that Im not really a morning person and have been known to come in late raises immediate and obvious red flags.
The trick here is to respond realistically by mentioning a small, work related weakness and what you are doing or have done to overcome it.

You wont compete with many people for a Case Manager jobtypically two or three other candidates. But you still have to convince the hiring managers of your readiness for the job, right attitude to work, and that you deserve the job more than the other candidates.
