Sometimes hiring managers are pretty bad at accurately describing the culture on their teams in part because they have a vested interest in seeing it a certain way and in part because they have an inherently different vantage point than their staff members do. For example, Ive heard incorrigible micromanagers tell candidates that they like to give people a lot of independence and autonomy and they probably really believed that about themselves. So take managers descriptions of culture with a heavy grain of salt , but theres still value in hearing what they do and dont emphasize.
But asking about what types of people tend to thrive versus those who tend to struggle can get you more revealing information. Youll often learn what that manager really cares about in their employees, or which traits will set you up to clash with them, or whos likely to bristle at their management style.
8. What do you like about working here?
You can learn a lot by the way interviewers respond to this question. People who genuinely enjoy their jobs and the company will usually have several things they can tell you that they like about working there and will usually sound sincere. But if you get a blank stare or a long silence before your interviewer answers, or the answer is something like the paycheck, consider that a red flag.
What Software Development Process Do You Use
The most popular software development processes are agile, Scrum, waterfall, or a hybrid model. Most companies use a hybrid model so its important to understand the details as itll dramatically impact your day-to-day experience.
Here are some details to inquire about:
- Estimation of development work Who is involved and is work estimated using hours or T-shirt sizing? How are disagreements on estimates handled?
- Code reviews How are code reviews done and who does them? What kind of feedback is given during code reviews?
- Code changes Can the application be tested locally? How soon does code in the repository get deployed to production?
- Deployment How frequent are deployments to different environments? Is there continuous deployment?
- Process changes How has the software development process changed over the past year? What challenges is the team currently facing?
These additional details will give you a good sense of the engineering culture, the quality of the code, and how open to feedback the team is.

You may have thoroughly researched the companys profile before coming for an interview. But, that much information shouldnt be sufficient before entering the organisation. Its better to properly grasp information from the horses mouth to know the insights.
Asking questions related to the company will help you understand their work more accurately. For example, you may ask them to brief you about the companys achievement, working environment, or visionary statements. It sounds like you are interested in knowing in-and-out about the company and making your judgment in your mind.

Knowing the values of the company and individuals who work there can help you make a decision when the job offer comes through.
You don’t want to work for someone or something you don’t believe in.
Prior research and this simple question can help get the information you need to make a great decision.
Is There A Policy On Outside Employment
Side hustles are more ubiquitous than ever these days. According to Woodruff-Santos, this is an area where you have to use your best judgment. If your side hustle or business could potentially compete with your day job, you might be required to disclose that, she says.
Even if your side business is completely unrelated to your day job, if theres a certain time of day you need to focus on it, you should be upfront about it to ensure your potential boss is flexible with you using that time.
If you do bring it up, its important to also make it clear that youre determined to provide the same level of great work for the company that you would otherwise. You have to try to do that carefully because you dont want to give the impression that you are not fully committed to the job, Woodruff-Santos says. But I think the pandemic has changed the way Americans work and earn money, and forward-thinking hiring managers shouldnt be intimidated by an employee who has other stuff going on.

Ask the hiring manager when the last time was that the team experimented with a new programming language, framework, or technology. Find out how the experiment came about and what the outcome was. Was it a success or a failure?
