While phone interviews are usually more of a pre-screening and therefore more casual, you should still follow up with the recruiter or hiring manager you spoke with.

  • Thank the interviewer

  • Highlight how interested you are in the role use specific conversation points to reinforce your enthusiasm

  • Ask about the next steps

Dear ,

Id like to thank you for chatting with me about the job with . I enjoyed learning more about how youre doing things differently with .

It sounds like something that would be perfect for someone with my background in , and Id love to talk more about the opportunity.

This email can be shorter than an in-person interview follow-up. Its main purpose is to remind the interviewer you exist and that youre still interested in the position after learning a bit more about it.

Of course, if you were approached for a job, given a phone interview, and youre not all that interested, then you dont have to follow up.

How Long Should You Wait After An Interview To Follow Up

You should follow up five business days after your job interview if you havent heard feedback from the employer. Or, if the employer provided an expected date for feedback after the interview, follow up one business day after that date has passed.

For example, if the hiring team said that they would inform you about the next steps within three days of your job interview, wait four days, and then send a follow-up email.

The idea is this will help you avoid looking too eager and desperate.

Note that you should also send a thank-you email within 24 hours of the interview!

Dont use these follow-up templates to email the company a day after your interview employers need time to make their decision. However, companies appreciate a brief thank you before theyve even made a decision.

This Job Would Be So Good For Me Because

This is a trap thats easy to fall into. You want to talk about all of the ways that the role would positively impact your life.

Heres the brutal truth: prospective employers dont care. It might seem selfish or cold-hearted, but they want to know about how youll add value to their companyas opposed to how they can benefit you.

Resist the urge to rant and rave about all of the reasons that job would improve your life, and place the majority of your emphasis on what you bring to the table and how that contributes to any company goals.

What To Do Right After A Job Interview

Resist the urge to go straight to the pub. Of course, you should celebrate a bit, assuming all went smoothly. However, whether you feel you aced the interview or not, you should immediately look for an opportunity to write down some notes.

I know what youre thinking, I just spent days stressing over this interview, and now you want me to spend more time thinking about!? Yes, thats exactly right. But dont worry, it will be over soon enough.

While you interview its a good idea to take notes on what the recruiter tells you however, its also easy to miss jotting something important down if you are focused on being responsive. So, when you finish an interview, whether you go home straight away or sit down somewhere else, take a moment to reflect on any important information mentioned during the interview, compare this with your notes, and write down anything you may have missed.

The reason behind is that you will capture information that may help you prepare for a second interview or to help you make a decision should you be offered a job. Salary information, job responsibilities, requested references/portfolios/work samples, and even the names of all of your interviewers are good to capture on paper for future reference.

How To Write A Follow Up Email After An Interview

How To Write an INTERVIEW FOLLOW UP EMAIL! (The PERFECT Follow Up Email after a JOB interview!)

Weve all been there we interview for a job were excited about it, feel it went pretty well, and then play the waiting game. Days pass, then weeks, and we wonder, when should we follow up with the company and how?

This post is all about how to write a follow up email after an interview and includes a template you can use.

There are generally at least two follow up touch points in any job interview process.

The first form of following up is actually sending a thank you note to your interviewer.

This should be done immediately after your interview . I recommend sending the thank you note the day of the interview or the day after.

Then you wait a bit to hear whats next. The frustrating thing is that in many cases, time will pass and youll still be left wondering where you stand.

Thats when the second stage of follow up comes into play the kind of follow up where you really want to say Hey, whats going on with this job? Am I moving forward in the process?

In terms of timing, I usually recommend waiting to send this type of follow up email 1-1.5 weeks after an interview if you havent heard anything.

I have another post here about the 3-2-1 rule of following up after interviews that you should also check out.

But when you write the email, what do you say?

Here are The Preparys tips on how to write a follow up email after an interview:

What To Do When You Are Offered A Job Position

This depends a great deal on your situation. The recruiter goes through a tough process deciding to offer you a job, but you have a lot to consider as well.

You should realize that when you are offered a job, either by phone or by email, this initiates a process of negotiation. One of the basics of negotiation is that you never want to be taken by surprise since it can lead to an irrational decision. Therefore, when you receive the good news that a company wants to hire you, follow this process:

  • Let the recruiter do the talking Have him/her share as much information as possible regarding salary, benefits, starting date, etc.
  • Ask clarification questions If there is anything that you are unsure about, try to get some clarity.
  • Dont act too fast The emotion of getting offered a job may push you to want to accept right away. However, recruiters often dont expect an immediate decision. Therefore, ask when they need you to make a decision. Chances are you will have a day or two to think it over. But if the recruiter wants your decision sooner, try to negotiate at least a couple of hours.
  • Again, its important not to overlook the importance of all the post-interview steps discussed above. And frankly, each of these steps is far less cumbersome than the amount of effort you put into building your resume, writing your cover letter and preparing for an interview. So stay focused and see the process through to the end.

Yes You Should Send A Thank You Email

The post-interview thank-you email probably isnt going to make or break your chances of getting a job. But you should probably send one anyway, as theres more downside associated with foregoing the formality.

If you dont send one, the hiring manager may notice and subsequently doubt your enthusiasm for the position, said career coach Kirsten Nelson. A polite follow-up might not cinch the job for you, but it at least shows that you want to work there.

Theres even more downside if you dont send a thank-you email after having been interviewed for a customer-facing position, like a sales or customer success role. Hiring managers want to see candidates in these positions demonstrate initiative and follow-through, said Stephen Jensen, director of mid market atKeepTruckin.

With sales, you want follow-through, you want to evaluate their forms of communication because it gives you some indication of how that candidate will be at your company in the role, Jensen said. You want to see those built-in best behaviors.

Theres upside to sending a thank-you email as well. They help candidates stay top of mind with hiring managers, even after the interview process is over.

Shwetha Shankar, vice president of customer success, had once passed on a candidate for a role she was hiring for, but the persons thank-you email stuck out to her. So when a better-fitting role opened up down the road, the thank-you emailer was the first person Shankar reached out to.
