Question: Will I Get Help From The Franchisor To Run My Franchise

Solved: Focus Groups Use Which Of The Following Methods? A...

Answer: The whole point of running a franchise is that you have the freedom of being a business owner combined with the support of an experienced franchisor. The founder of the business will want to make sure their franchisees are in the best possible position to maintain profitability. This means theyll usually provide all franchisees with a good amount of training and support.

But remember, youll still be responsible for operating your franchise unit. So, its vital you have the core characteristics of a successful entrepreneur business acumen, determination and leadership skills.

As Dave Thomas, founder of the US fast-food giant Wendys, said:

“What do you need to start a business? Three simple things: know your product better than anyone, know your customer, and have a burning desire to succeed.”

When youre choosing between franchise opportunities and compiling your questions to ask a franchisor, make sure you bring up training and support. As a general rule, the higher the franchise fee, the more exhaustive the induction programme is. So with a few exceptions youll get what you pay for when it comes to extra guidance.

As A Franchise Manager What Is Your Management Style

Answer tips:

Try to avoid labels.

Some of the more common labels, like progressive, consultative, persuasive, can have several meanings or descriptions depending on which management guru you listen to.

The situational style is safe, because it says you will manage according to the situation, instead of one size fits all.

Answer samples

In my experience delegating responsibility and authority is crucial. A team needs to be able to develop and grow as individuals and a whole, not be held back by low expectations or ego.

I believe in building a team. Each member of the team should be clear on their role, know where they fit in and feel as though they can depend on one another. I also believe in real-time feedback. If you do something wrong you should know it immediately. Regardless of right or wrong, the further removed feedback is in time, the less effective it is.

What Kinds Of Support Do You Offer Franchisees

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

It is the duty of franchisors to offer support in the form of training and mentorship to their franchisees. The level of support offered can vary widely, from written materials only to hands-on personnel and even financial support at times in the form of incentives or assistance. Franchisors want to ensure that their franchises succeed, so the more support they can offer, the better.

Get A Feel For The Franchise

Talking to franchisees can also give you something you won’t get anywhere else: a feeling for what it’s like to run this business day to day. Thinking solely in economic terms is a mistake if you end up with a franchise that doesn’t suit your lifestyle or self-image. When you envision running a restaurant franchise, for instance, you may be thinking of all the money you’re going to make. Talking to franchisees can bring you back to reality–which is a lot more likely to involve manning a fry station, disciplining teenage employees and working late hours than cruising around in your Ferrari.

Many franchisees and franchising experts say there’s no better way to cap off your research than by spending time in a franchise location to see what your life will be like if you buy. Buyers should spend at least one week working in a unit. This is the best way for the franchisor and franchisee to evaluate each other. Offer to work for free. If the franchisor doesn’t want you to, you should be skeptical about the investment.

When all your research is completed, the choice between two equally sound franchises often comes down to your gut instinct. That’s why talking to franchisees and visiting locations is so important in the selection process.

Be Aware Of Potential Challenges

Do your homework. Be sure to thoroughly research the industry youre interested in and have a good understanding of challenges that could lie ahead. A potential franchisor will also want insight into how you would deal with difficult situations, whether its an internal staffing issue or industry shift that could affect the franchise network as a whole.

Most established franchisors have contingency plans for large shifts in business but are interested in your take on how you would pivot your own strategy if you bought a franchise. Interviewer: I mean, isnt $1 million to build a McDonalds, to buy a McDonalds?

Nick: Yeah, I think its a million to buy in, but then youve got to build the store, youve got to have theyou gotta furnish it.

Interviewer: Oh, its a million, plus

Nick: Yeah. I dont know exactly what McDonalds is, but with Chick-fil-A, its a very low barrier to entry financially. So that piqued my interest. But then also just seeing the values that Chick-fil-A has, closed on Sunday, really involved in the community, very big focus on leadership development as far as developing our team members, whether theyre team members that stay with us for the long term or developing them to be better members of our own community and they go elsewhere. A lot of those aspects really caught my interest, saying, wow, this is a pretty incredible company.
