More On Oprah’s Interview
Samantha Markle, her half-sister, released a book recently called The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister Part 1. Meghan Markle said she didn’t really have a relationship with Samantha, grew up as an only child, and hasn’t seen her in nearly 20 years.
Oprah also said she could tell it was painful for Harry to discuss his fraught relationship with his father, Prince Charles, noting that no one in the royal family — Charles included — stood up for Meghan and Harry and against the racist undertones of how they were covered in the press.
Archie Made An Appearance
Towards the end of the couple’s nearly two-hour-long interview with Oprah, the proud parents shared an intimate black and white clip of Archie playing on the beach with the family dogs, Guy and Pula.

Meghan’s Passport And Driver’s Licence
Historian Robert Lacey explained that Meghan handing in her driver’s licence would have been a requirement under security rules, as she “would not be protected” if she went driving by herself. Royal commentators said that her passport would still have been used when she was travelling internationally â only the Queen does not use one â but that it would have been kept with other royals’ personal documents in a safe and accessible place, which “really was routine, and probably anything would be accessible to her if she wanted it.”

Live Updates: Oprah Interviews Harry And Meghan
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an exclusive interview airing Sunday on CBS. Harry and Meghan are speaking out about their time in the royal family in their first interview since they ended their royal duties.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been busy ever since. The two have moved with their son Archie to California, they announced earlier this year that Meghan is pregnant with their second child. They have also signed production deals while vowing to continue living a life of public service as private citizens.
But there has been a split with the royal family since they stepped aside. And this week, Buckingham Palace said it is investigating allegations that unnamed staff members accused Meghan of “emotional cruelty and manipulation” after her marriage to Harry in 2018, forcing two aides to quit. The couple considers the public response part of a smear campaign.
“I don’t know how they could expect that, after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that ‘The Firm’ is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us,” said Meghan in a preview of the conversation. “The Firm” is a common nickname for Britain’s royal family.

Flower Girl Dresses Incident
Months after Meghan wed Harry, a widely reported story, damaging to her public image, was published in the British media that she had made her sister-in-law, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, cry in a dispute over flower girl dresses. In the interview, Meghan insisted that the actual incident had seen the opposite occur, with Catherine causing Meghan to cry. She added that ” apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note apologizing” after which she “forgave” her, but sources close to the palace told The Times that Meghan had “slammed the door in Kate’s face” when she took a bunch of flowers to Nottingham Cottage to apologize. Another source later told People that “both women were in tears over the incident”.Andrew Morton claimed in the revised version of his book, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, that Meghan had gifted Catherine and six of her friends with gold bracelets following the royal wedding, a move that was described as “an elegant peace offering”.
What Has The Reaction Been To The Interview Itself
Washington Post columnist Margaret Sullivan said Oprah Winfrey “proved herself to be the best celebrity interviewer ever”.
“Oprah best displayed her interviewing chops by relentlessly circling back to emotional or newsmaking comments like a heat-seeking missile,” Sullivan wrote in a Perspective column.
“Not much was allowed to simply disappear in a flurry of words, as happens far too often in interviews. Oprah did not let the couple get away with general hints or diplomatic niceties.”
Vox columnist Emily VanDerWerff also praised Oprah’s interview style, saying, “she was the only person who could conduct the Harry and Meghan interview”.
“Oprah excels at creating a friendly, warm atmosphere in which famous people feel as though they can share their innermost thoughts,”VanDerWerff wrote.
“It’s not clear how much the Meghan and Harry interview happened roughly as presented on television, or if it was edited to create a more coherent progression of its subjects thoughts .
“But Oprah’s genius lies less in the overall scope of an interview and more in the micromanagement of individual moments.
“An interview subject can say something shocking, and Oprah is skilled at guiding the exchange so that it plays out to its fullest effect, while giving the subject space to process their thoughts and decide whether they want to share more.”

Queen Celebrates Unity And Dedication In Commonwealth Day Speech
Queen Elizabeth II celebrated the “unity” and “dedication” of the British people in a speech on Commonwealth Day.
“Whilst experiences of the last year have been different across the Commonwealth, stirring examples of courage, commitment and selfless dedication to duty have been demonstrated in every Commonwealth nation and territory, notably by those working on the frontline who have been delivering healthcare and other public services in their communities,” Queen Elizabeth said. “We have also taken encouragement from remarkable advances in developing new vaccines and treatments. The testing times experienced by so many have led to a deeper appreciation of the mutual support and spiritual sustenance we enjoy by being connected to others.”
The Commonwealth Day broadcast aired on BBC and on YouTube, and featured not only the queen, but also appearances by Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William and Catherine. What Happened During The Interview
During the two-hour sit-down, Meghan and Harry spoke at length about their experience as working members of the royal family, in which race, mental health, and many more issues were raised. They also discussed the harsh treatment they faced not only by the British tabloids but from members of ‘The Firm’ itself.
Among the most shocking allegations was that there were concerns and conversations about how dark their child’s skin might be from an unknown member of the family. Meghan went on to claim “They were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security.”
Meghan also revealed that during her time as a working royal, she experienced suicidal thoughts and sought help from palace HR, but was ignored.
“I was told that I couldn’t , that it wouldn’t be good for the institution,” Meghan told Oprah.
During the second half of the interview, Harry joined Meghan, revealing that he felt trapped and didnt see a way out of royal life, until his marriage to Meghan. Without question she saved me, he said.
In another segment, Harry claimed that his “biggest concern was history repeating itself,” referring to his late mother, Princess Diana, who was notably hounded by the British press before being killed in a car crash in 1997, after her vehicle was chased by paparazzi.

On Valentines Day, the Duke and Duchess announced they were expecting their second child, and the pair are said to also discuss their hopes for their expanding family with Oprah.
In a preview released by CBS, Oprah made it clear that there is no subject off-limits, and in another clip, Meghan opened up about how she believed the Palace would react to her speaking openly about her life.

I Could Not Feel Lonelier Meghan Said About Her Time With The Royal Family
According to Meghan, she was silenced during her time as a senior official of the royal family.
In a quiet moment with Oprah, Meghan revealed she was under the belief that in exchange for not commenting on her life, she would be protected, something she found out was not true.
Meghan said it was important to make a distinction between some members of the royal family and the administration that runs the family. For instance, she said the Queen had always been wonderful to her, even going so far as to share a blanket with her during their first press tour.
However, she was forced to stay at home for fear of “oversaturation,” something that she likened to being in COVID-19 lockdown.
“It’s nothing like what it looks like,” she said.
Harry And Meghan Detail Royal Struggles From Discussions Of Baby’s Skin Tone To Suicidal Thoughts
Conversations about “how dark” their baby’s skin tone would be. A rift between Prince Harry and his father so deep that Harry said his father at one point “stopped taking my calls.” And Meghan, Duchess of Sussex saying she “just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”
These were some of the shocking details described by Harry and Meghan in an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, the first they have given since they stepped away from official royal duties last year. They said they would have stayed had they gotten support from the royal family.
In one of the only lighthearted moments, the couple revealed their second child, expected this summer, will be a girl.
But Harry and Meghan spent most of the discussion trying to give their side of many of the tabloid stories that have circulated about them since they got together, including one about how Meghan had once made her sister-in-law, Catherine, cry.
While they had harsh words for their treatment in the press, the most disturbing parts of the interview centered on how they were treated by members of the royal family. Harry said he had a “really good relationship” with the Queen, but said he was “disappointed” by his father and that, while he loves his brother William “to bits,” they’re on “different paths.”
More portions of the interview aired on Monday exclusively on “CBS This Morning.”
