Give A Little Personal History

It can be good to give a little personal history or insights into who you are when determining how to answer Tell me about yourself, as long as you do it right. Sharing what inspired you to make the career choice you made is OK, for example. Something like “I grew up in a one-stoplight town in the middle of nowhere and decided to go to West Virginia University because it was close to home and a good option for me” or “I love to play golf in my spare time” are acceptable. This is especially true if you’ve done your research and know that the interviewer has similar interests and can relate a bonus for you!

If you are new to the workforce, you may not have a choice but to use some scenarios that are more personal in nature, because you may not have many work stories or experiences to pull from. When I was interviewing for an internship in graduate school, I remember being asked something along the lines of “What’s one of the most difficult scenarios or challenges you’ve dealt with to date?” My answer? Marriage. It was the most honest answer I could give, and I explained why.

Even though I did have work experience, marriage was still the first thing that came to mind. I was able to make the answer work-related by sharing that marriage requires communication, compromise, teamwork, understanding, and more, all of which are requirements for success in the workplace. I received and accepted the offer and was later offered a full-time position.

Variations On Tell Me About Yourself

Since youre trying to get straight to the heart of what your interviewer is asking you, its important to listen for all the variations you may hear on the tell me about yourself question.

If the interviewer doesnt ask you to tell them about yourself straight out, they may ask one of these questions:

Walk me through your resume

This may sound like an invitation to simply repeat all of the information on your resume, but that is the absolute wrong approach to take.

Think of this question as merely a conversation starter. Even though they asked you to walk them through your resume specifically, you dont want to merely recite your resume bullet points and give them no additional useful information.

Tell me something thats not on your resume

Another very similar variation is:

Tell me something unique about you.

These questions are phrased in such a way that it may make starting the conversation easier. You probably can think of something thats unique about you, but remember you dont want to raise any red flags or go off on too many rabbit trails.

If you have a hobby, interest, or unique history that can be folded into a discussion about your job skills, so much the better!

I’m Excited To Get Started

Showing your enthusiasm about the job can demonstrate you are ready and willing to go forward with the hiring process. When the interviewer talks about the potential applicants to the manager or business owner, they may be more likely to present you in a more positive tone because of how eager you were to begin working.

I Am Very Familiar With What Your Company Does

Letting a prospective employer know that you are familiar with what a company does shows that you have a legitimate interest in the business and are not just wasting their time. Do your homework before arriving for an interview. Check out the company website for information about products and services. Search for the latest transactions and pertinent business news.

Be sure to let the interviewer know that you are familiar with the newest company acquisition or the latest product that was just developed. Explain how your skills and experience are a perfect fit for the employer.

Video Interview Body Language

Eye contact is very important during an in-person interview, and you want to convey that same level of connection during a video interview. Heres how: Avoid the instinct to look directly at your interviewer on the screen while youre answering a question. Instead, when you speak, you want to direct your gaze at the webcam. When you do this, your eyes are more likely to align with the interviewers eyes on the other end. When youre listening, you can look back at the screen.

Throughout the interview, keep your mood upbeat and convey optimism with your body language. One way to achieve this is to have good posture. Sit in your chair with your back straight and your shoulders open. Feet can be planted on the floor and arms can rest in your lap or on the desk.

When youre listening, nod and smile when appropriate to communicate that youre giving them your full attention. Use hand gestures when it feels appropriate and keep your movements close to your body. Avoid fidgeting or letting your gaze drift away from the device.

Consider What The Interviewer Wants To Know

Attempt to think of this question from the interviewer’s point of view to help you craft a response. Interviewers are primarily listening to see if you have the experience to do the job, have the ability to learn, and would be a good fit for the work group and organization. This is why focusing on work-related accomplishments and being yourself is essential.

    Why Interviewers Ask This Question

Lambart says the question Tell me about yourself isnt just used to ease someone into the interview its a way for the employer to assess your communication and interpersonal skills.

The interviewer is trying to get a sense of your organisational skills, and get some clarity around why youre interested in the role and the organisation. Thats why its so important to be prepared and organised in your response, and use a formula to create your answer.

The tell me about yourself question is a great opportunity to let the interviewer know why they should pick you, highlighting from the outset your most relevant experience, transferable skills and key achievements that ensure you stand out from your competition, Lambart says. Keep in mind that your answer could influence the direction of the interview and form the foundation of any follow-up questions. You dont know what questions will be asked afterwards, so this may be your only chance to demonstrate why youre the best candidate for the job. Lambart says research shows that an interviewer will often make up their mind whether youre the right candidate in the first few minutes. Therefore, you need to make this first response really count.
