Though the original novel set the stage for the spooky romance explosion that was to follow, the new TV series is another in a long line of tantalizing programs.

Though paranormal romance is a massive TV sub-genre, only the very best shows capture the same energy as AMC’s newest hit.

Interview With The Vampire

Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, or simply Interview with the Vampire, is an American gothic horror and vampire television series created by Rolin Jones, based on the 1976 novel of the same name by Anne Rice. It stars Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac, Sam Reid as the vampire and Louis’ lover Lestat de Lioncourt, Bailey Bass as teenage vampire Claudia, Assad Zaman as ancient vampire Armand and Eric Bogosian as journalist Daniel Molloy. The series embraces the homosexual elements of Rice’s work, which are only insinuated in the 1994 film adaptation of the novel. It is the first television series in Rice’s Immortal Universe.

AMC Networks announced in May 2020 that it had purchased the rights to intellectual property encompassing 18 of Rice’s novels, primarily The Vampire Chronicles, and the possibility to develop feature films and television series from the deal. AMC gave an eight episode order for Interview with the Vampire in June 2021. Interview With The Vampire: The Cast

The cast features Jacob Anderson as the brooding Louis and Sam Reid as the devilish Lestat. Changes were also made to the casting, as creators were seeking out a Black actor in their 30s to take on the role of Louis. He will be an owner of brothels rather than a plantation owner from the books. Young newcomer Bailey Bass will take on the part of the precocious young vampire, Claudia, who was previously played by then ten-year-old Kirsten Dunst in the 1994 film.

The cast also includes Eric Bogosian taking on the role of Daniel Malloy, the reporter to whom Louis narrates his life story. The show’s character will reportedly be much older than the source text. Christian Robinson and Kaylne Coleman also join the cast in reoccurring roles.

The series follows Nick Knight, an ancient vampire who works as a homicide detective in Toronto. His plans for making amends for centuries of killing are challenged when rival vampires roll into town and aim to do harm.

The urban environs of Toronto are the perfect backdrop for a modern vampire series, and there are plenty of screams to go along with the show’s procedural format. Though it only lasted a few years, no show before or since has been as clever with the vampire mythos.

Updating Interview With The Vampire For Today

Bringing Interview with the Vampire to TV involved building a universe, said Jones, who kept the other Vampire Chronicles in mind while planning everything from character details to the bigger picture.

The titular interview takes place in the present day the 1994 film, its screenplay written by Rice, also placed the interview in then-modern times. Like the novel, the new Interview with the Vampire is centered on Louis, who shares how he became a vampire with Daniel Molloy, a character first introduced to readers as an unnamed young reporter.

This Daniel, portrayed by Eric Bogosian, is an older seasoned journalist, but hes essentially the same guy, Jones said. The show alludes to an earlier interview between Daniel and Louis from the 70s a callback to the novel.

Louis, played by Jacob Anderson, has some new origins. In previous iterations, he was the owner of a plantation near New Orleans in the late 1700s, which is when he met Lestat. The new Louis, still prone to periods of melancholy, guilt and self-loathing, is a Black brothel owner in early 20th century New Orleans when his story begins.

Another significant character update involves Claudia just 5 years old when she was made into a vampire in the novel, though she was portrayed by an 11-year-old Kirsten Dunst in the film. AMCs adaptation ages Claudia further by making her 14 at the time of her transformation. This doesnt make her any more prepared for the internal turmoil that sets in.

Contrary to his book description, this version of Armand is a fully-grown adult when he is turned into a vampire. While he does not kill Claudia like he did in the book, he allows her to die by Santiago’s hands and only comes to Louis’ aid when he is nearly killed as well. Unlike the book, Louis and Armand do not get together with Louis parting ways with him after the fall of the Parisian coven. Louis is unable to accept Armand’s way of life, which meant forgetting his tragedies like they never existed, and also knows he had allowed for Claudia to die .

Amc’s Interview With The Vampire Is A Cheesy But Curious Series Adaptation

Previously tackled by Neil Jordan nearly 30 years ago, Anne Rices Interview with the Vampire now receives an episodic treatment from AMC this week . Adapted here by Rolin Jones and with the first two episodes directed by Alan Taylor , the expansive look makes one appreciate how encompassing this overview of a vampires life can be: about morality, legacy, and even how ones fear of death can inhibit one’s enjoyment of the present. These meditations come in a package that includes some cheesy writing and drawn-out storytelling, but that still might have enough positives for this series to leave its mark on the long legacy of Rices text.

Interview with the Vampire becomes a love story when Lestat de Lioncourt enters the picture, with his staggering, accented low voice and Brad Pitt-esque looks and a self-assured presentation as a classy outsider. It seems safe to assume Interview with the Vampire will return in late 2023 or early 2024, but nothing official has been announced yet. “Bulgaria. Romania. Paris. San Francisco. New Orleans. The first season will closely follow the first novel, Interview with the Vampire.It will focus on Louis de Pointe du Lac, a vampire who tells the story of his 200-year-old life to an eager journalist named Daniel Malloy, who is looking for a second chance to turn his life around. In the show, Daniel is placed in the modern-day as a college professor struggling in his personal life and career. He jumps on the chance to interview Louis to allow him to write something groundbreaking.

How ‘mayfair Witches’ Connects To Amc’s ‘interview With The Vampire’

The supernatural universe is expanding! Mayfair Witches is the second installment in AMCs Immortal Universe franchise and it shares a few connections to the networks Interview With the Vampire series.

Like Interview, Mayfair Witches is based on books by the late Anne Rice, who died at age 80 in December 2021. The show follows Dr. Rowan Fielding , a neurosurgeon who learns she is the heiress of a powerful family of witches. The cast also includes Harry Hamlin as patriarch Cortland Mayfair, Jack Huston as the sinister spirit Lasher and Tongayi Chirisa as Ciprien Grieve, a new character created for the show.

Daddario hadnt read anything by Rice before taking on the role, but she knew that fans would have high expectations for the show. Ive been part of book adaptations and Im well aware, as an avid reader myself, fans have a deep love of the story and characters and want it to be true to the books, the White Lotus alum told The A.V. Club earlier this month, adding that she ultimately read Lives of the Mayfair Witches before and during filming. The idea is to go in with the best intentions and try to be true to the story its why theyre adapted in the first place. Its how we approached it.

The Baywatch actress went on to reveal that a crossover with Interview is an intention, but hinted that fans shouldnt expect it in season 1. The first episode of Interview, however, included a brief nod to Mayfair.

Interview With The Vampire: Everything Else We Know

A first look image for the show was released in July 2022, teasing fans with just a glimpse of Reid as Lestat. While fans of the books were ecstatic at their first look into Interview with the Vampire, some were also concerned regarding the series’ faithfulness to its original source. However, showrunners Rolin Jones and Alan Taylor assured that the series will live up to the expectations of Rice’s fans.

In talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jones said:

“We know how much this book and the ones that follow mean to their massive fan base. We feel you over our shoulders as we tend the Savage Garden. Louis and Lestat are coming out of hiding, and we canât wait to reunite them with you.â

Despite the reassurances, the trailer revealed at Comic-Con revealed a few changes to the source text. One of the more noticeable is that the series is set in 1910, whereas the books are set in 1791. The shift in the timeline is quite exciting given that, as per Rolin Jones, the series will focus on a second interview that Molloy has with Louis, forty-odd years after the first. According to Eric Bogosian:

“The script is very clear that it’s forty-something years later, and Daniel is no longer the boy who was a novice journalist, just starting out, making tapes of this vampire interview.”

The network behind The Walking Dead and supernatural horror drama NOS4A2 just got a lot scarier.

AMC announced Thursday that it has greenlit Interview With the Vampire, a series based on author Anne Rices 1976 debut novel, which is part of the book series The Vampire Chronicles.

The first eight-episode season is expected to premiere next year on both the AMC network and AMC+.

Last year, AMC landed the rights to the 18 titles in Rices Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches series as part of a deal with the author and her son, Christopher Rice, both of whom will serve as non-writing executive producers.

AMC plans to build a multi-show universe around the Rice books. The acquisition may shape up to be a fruitful one the pair of book series has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.

Interview centers on Louis de Pointe du Lac, who tells his life story to a reporter simply referred to as the boy. In 1791, Louis meets a vampire named Lestat de Lioncourt, who transforms him into a vampire. Throughout the novel, the immortal Louis comes to terms with his new vampire self, but he still expresses repulsion toward Lestat and his lack of compassion for the humans upon which he preys.

Rice composed the novel shortly after the death of her daughter Michele, who served as an inspiration for the child-vampire Claudia in the novel.

It’s going to be a bloody long hiatus

Sad news for all of us who love gloriously off the wall television: Interview with the Vampire recently concluded its first season. Not many other shows are able to achieve its balance of high camp and thoughtful reflections on humanity and memory, which means that the wait for Season 2 is going to be unbearable. There’s still so much more ground to cover from Anne Rice’s book series, especially if those Graduate-esque final moments of the season finale are any indication. The good news is that AMC has high hopes for the show’s continued success, having officially renewed the series for a second season.

Parents need to know that Interview with the Vampire is a horror-drama that looks at vampire life from the perspective of the vampires. The series is based on Anne Rice’s 1976 novel of the same name. It follows the story of Louis de Pointe du Lac from before he becomes a vampire to modern times. The series is updated from the source material in order to more overtly explore themes of racial and sexual identity. Violence and sexual content are all heavily featured in this version of Interview, and things get especially gory when the vampires “feed” on humans.

Staying True To The Spirit Of The Vampire Chronicles

Even with some changes to the original storylines, the Interview with the Vampire team did not ignore the source material rereading and seeing what was in the crevices and the cracks helped them make the show, Jones said.

There are subtle references to characters from later novels and even a quick shoutout to Rices Mayfair witches . Characters that did not appear in the film do appear here. And perhaps the most important detail for the diehard fans Lestat and Louis are lovers, in a move that takes the famed subtext of Rices earlier vampire novels and simply turns it into text.

What Interview with the Vampire hinted at in the 70s was progressive for its time, Jones said, adding that by the later books, its as if there was this great romance that was never really written, but we all kind of agree it happened.

While Jones did not sugarcoat some of the more toxic dish-throwing aspects of the vampires relationship, he saw tremendous opportunity in how he could depict it in an updated adaptation.

Between Rices writings and the 1994 film, which has its fans and critics alike, Jones acknowledged that the series main cast had big ghosts behind them. But he praised Anderson who he pointed out is in nearly every scene and Reid for their stamina, as well as the range of their performances.
