It’s been a whirlwind year for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The couple, who stepped down from royal duties in January 2020 following intense pressure from the UK tabloid press, has since moved to the US and set up a new life with their son, Archie. Harry and Meghan have remained silent for the most part but controversy continued to follow them.
In an unprecedented move, the couple, who was officially cut off from the royal family on 22 February, sat down with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
In Oprah with Meghan and Harry, the Duchess of Sussex said: “As an adult who lived a really independent life, to then go into this construct that is different than I think what people imagine it to be it’s really liberating to be able to have the right, and the privilege in some ways, to be able to say, ‘Yes, I’m ready to talk’.”

In the opening minutes of her exclusive interview with Oprah, Meghan said that she never looked up information about Prince Harry before she got married. While she knew about the royals, discussion of the monarchy wasn’t something that was a part of the conversation when Meghan was growing up.
“I went into it naively,” Meghan told Oprah.
According to Meghan, her mother even asked if her late mother-in-law, Diana, had done an exclusive interview. She says she now knows about Diana’s famous interviews, but she didn’t specify any.
But Meghan said her lack of research was because Prince Harry was telling her everything she needed to know.
She also expressed gratitude that she hadn’t researched the family more as it helped her get rid of nerves before her first interactions with the Queen and other members of the royal family.

What Did Meghan And Harry Say In Their Interview
Following the programmes broadcast in the United States, we now have a better idea of what exactly the former royals discussed in their interview with Oprah.
There was much talk of Meghans experience of being a member of the royal family as she opened up about feeling suicidal, saying she just didnt want to be alive any more.
Meghan claimed she had sought help from senior officials but was turned away.
An allegation was also made that there had been concerns from within the royal family about what the skin colour of Harry and Meghans first child would be while the former actress was pregnant with Archie.
That conversation, I am never going to share, said Harry. At the time it was awkward, I was a bit shocked.
Harry went on to reveal that he feels let down by his father, Prince Charles, who he claims stopped taking calls at a certain point after the couple stepped down from official duties.
He explained: I feel really let down because hes been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like and Archies his grandson.
But at the same time, of course I will always love him but theres a lot of hurt thats happened and I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.

Conversations about “how dark” their baby’s skin tone would be. A rift between Prince Harry and his father so deep that Harry said his father at one point “stopped taking my calls.” And Meghan, Duchess of Sussex saying she “just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”
These were some of the shocking details described by Harry and Meghan in an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, the first they have given since they stepped away from official royal duties last year. They said they would have stayed had they gotten support from the royal family.
In one of the only lighthearted moments, the couple revealed their second child, expected this summer, will be a girl.
But Harry and Meghan spent most of the discussion trying to give their side of many of the tabloid stories that have circulated about them since they got together, including one about how Meghan had once made her sister-in-law, Catherine, cry.
While they had harsh words for their treatment in the press, the most disturbing parts of the interview centered on how they were treated by members of the royal family. In the final moments of their groundbreaking interview, Harry and Meghan discussed their different regrets with the iconic host, but both said they remained grateful that they made it “out to the other side.”
Meghan told Oprah that her regret was believing that the royal family would protect her, something she said would have made all the difference. If they had protected us, “we wouldn’t have left,” Harry said.
However, Harry also said that his relationship with Meghan saved him, while Meghan disagreed, instead saying that Harry’s decision saved their entire family.

Washington Post columnist Margaret Sullivan said Oprah Winfrey “proved herself to be the best celebrity interviewer ever”.
“Oprah best displayed her interviewing chops by relentlessly circling back to emotional or newsmaking comments like a heat-seeking missile,” Sullivan wrote in a Perspective column.
“Not much was allowed to simply disappear in a flurry of words, as happens far too often in interviews. Oprah did not let the couple get away with general hints or diplomatic niceties.”
Vox columnist Emily VanDerWerff also praised Oprah’s interview style, saying, “she was the only person who could conduct the Harry and Meghan interview”.
“Oprah excels at creating a friendly, warm atmosphere in which famous people feel as though they can share their innermost thoughts,”VanDerWerff wrote.
“It’s not clear how much the Meghan and Harry interview happened roughly as presented on television, or if it was edited to create a more coherent progression of its subjects thoughts .
“But Oprah’s genius lies less in the overall scope of an interview and more in the micromanagement of individual moments.
“An interview subject can say something shocking, and Oprah is skilled at guiding the exchange so that it plays out to its fullest effect, while giving the subject space to process their thoughts and decide whether they want to share more.”
I Saw History Repeating Itself Harry Says About The Way Meghan Was Treated
When Harry joined Meghan for their exclusive interview with Oprah, he immediately expressed that he was worried his mother’s story would repeat itself in Meghan. “I saw history repeating itself,” he said.
According to Prince Harry, he saw an intense correlation between his wife and his late mother, something he said was only escalated by racial tensions and social media.
He continued to ask for help, and only considered stepping back from the family when it was clear help wasn’t coming, even to the point where his own father wasn’t answering his calls.
Harry said he and Meghan talked very deeply about stepping back as senior members of the royal family to take a respite from the intense pressure from both the tabloids and the Crown. However, he says he did not blindside the “Firm” but continually discussed his plans with multiple people, including the Queen.
“I never blindsided my grandmother,” Harry said. “I have too much respect for her.”

How Did Oprah Get The Scoop
The same way she overcame childhood poverty in rural Mississippi to become the worlds first Black female billionaire: time, effort and a surfeit of natural charisma. In a video clip released on Friday, Oprah recalls that she first called Meghan to propose an interview in February or March 2018. According to The Times of London, the two met in person that March when Oprah found herself in London, as one does, and was invited by Meghan to meet her at Kensington Palace, as one is.
In April, Oprah invited Meghans mother, Doria Ragland, to her home for lunch and yoga. Approximately two months of acquaintance was enough to earn Oprah an invitation to Meghan and Harrys wedding.
Days after the couple announced their intention to step back as senior royals, Oprah released a statement denying rumors she had advised them on a course of action. Harry revealed to Oprah that the turning point between Meghan and the royal family happened after their Australia tour, when members of the crown got jealous over the “effortless” way Megan connected with the people and the commonwealth.
However, Meghan said that she did not receive royal training, and was instead up late and night googling protocols like the national anthem to prevent embarrassment.
“I just wanted to make them proud,” said Meghan.

Think you’d heard it all about the British royals and that infamous Oprah interview? There’s always more.
Oprah’s shocking March interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, aka Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, still is creating buzz. Now, an upcoming TV special will bring in body language, linguistics and forensic psychology experts to examine the interview and wring even more information out of the explosive chat.
The new special, called Meghan and Harry: Recollections May Vary, will air on streaming service Discovery Plus in the UK on April 30. The title comes from Queen Elizabeth II’s response to the shocking special, in which the monarch, now age 95, issued a statement noting that “while some recollections may vary, are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”

The special comes from the UK’s Shearwater Media, which has made similar shows that also try to learn more about people from their media interviews. Its show Faking It: Tears Of A Crime, analyzes the behavior, speech and body language of criminals, and is now in its third season.
“This is a new and different way to dissect the interview of the year,” Executive Producer Steve Anderson said, according to Variety. “What is revealed by facial expressions, physical gestures and patterns of speech? The answers are fascinating.”
