Prince Harry, Meghan reveal struggles behind royal rift in Oprah interview

In a heartbreaking moment, Meghan revealed that she was having “methodical” thoughts about suicide while she was in the royal family.

“That was a very clear and real and frightening thought,” Meghan said. “I couldn’t be left alone.”

According to Meghan, she went to the “Institution,” meaning several senior officials, to receive help for her suicidal thoughts, or to be checked into a hospital, but she was told it wouldn’t be good for optics. After being rebuffed, Meghan said she reached out to one of Princess Diana’s best friends, but continued to have those thoughts, which she called a breaking point.

She also described feeling captive, as her license, passport, and credit cards were taken after her wedding and were unavailable to her.

Clearly emotional, the Duchess said her life in the palace was an example of why people should be kind, since you never know what people are going through “behind closed doors.”

Claim Of Being Financially Cut Off By The Royal Family

Meghan and Harry claimed in the interview that they were financially cut off by the royal family, with Harry saying that the royal family had, literally cut me off financially. In June 2021, accompanying the royal familys annual financial report on its financial activities under the Sovereign Grant in June 2021, Clarence House, Prince Charless residence, released an additional statement revealing that he had provided financial support to Meghan and Harry as they were departing the royal family. The statement claimed that Charles had provided them a substantial sum to support their transition out of the royal family. The statement also noted that such financial support ceased in the summer of 2020. Some media outlets argued that this meant that that the assertion in the interview had been false. However, other sources argued that their claim had not been false, since financial support, according to Clarence Houses statement, had ceased during the summer of 2020, and Harry and Meghan had, themselves, per the royal familys financial report, repaid the royal family $3.3 million in reimbursement for renovations to Frogmore Cottage.

Oprah Winfrey pulled off what has become a rare television event: the tell-all interview that turns into a cultural moment. On Sunday, an audience of more than 17 million watched bombshell revelations tumble out of the mouths of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry as they described their lives under the palace gaze in a two-hour CBS special that rivaled any of the royal dramas on the Netflix series The Crown.

Social-media discussion of the show has continued since the credits rolled, leaving many people who missed it wondering where they could stream it. For the next 30 days, the special will be available on CBS.com and the CBS app. But after that, it will not have a home on any streaming platform.

Thats because, from the start of negotiations, Ms. Winfreys company, Harpo Productions, the owner of the program, envisioned the special as something suited to a big broadcast network, three people with knowledge of the deal said. Harpo did not even attempt to sell the streaming rights to Netflix or Paramount+, the streaming platform owned by CBSs parent company, ViacomCBS, the people said.

Prince Harry and Meghan sit down for a chat with Oprah.

Oprah’s headline-making interview of American-born Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, and her husband, Prince Harry, was nothing less than explosive, and it continues to reverberate days later.

In the Sunday interview, Meghan said she endured “constant” suicidal thoughts and that no one in the palace would help her. She and Harry said a royal family member expressed concern about how dark baby Archie’s skin color might be. Harry said his father, Prince Charles, wouldn’t take his phone calls for a while, and cut him off from royal money. The two said the palace cut them off from royal protection despite death threats, some based on Meghan being biracial. It was a grim two-hour recitation that sent “American Twitter” raring to fight “British Twitter” after it was over.

Oprah also said she could tell it was painful for Harry to discuss his fraught relationship with his father, Prince Charles, noting that no one in the royal family — Charles included — stood up for Meghan and Harry and against the racist undertones of how they were covered in the press.

    Some Said Oprah Went Soft

Some commentators, mostly UK-based, speculated that Oprah went soft on the couple because of her friendship with them.

Royal biographer Anna Pasternak told the BBC that none of Meghans real behaviour was questioned.

It was a very soft-serving, soapy interview in Meghans favour, Pasternak said.

It was an absolute exercise in torching the house of Windsor.

Former Fox News and NBC host and journalist Megyn Kelly was one of the naysayers about Oprahs performance, tweeting that she wanted more from the interview.

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan also spoke out negatively against the interview and, when his backlash drew criticism from his co-host, he walked off the set of his own show.

Britains media regulator launched a probe after receiving more than 40,000 complaints about Morgans comments in regards to Meghan Markle.

Meghan And Harry Announce They’re Having A Girl

A baby girl will be joining Prince Harry, Meghan and Archie this summer.

Harry and Meghan announced their baby’s gender while talking to Oprah about their new life in California.

The couple announced they were expecting a second baby on Valentine’s Day 2021, exactly 37 years after Princess Diana announced her pregnancy, but waited until the interview to reveal the gender of the child. They have not announced a name.

The joyful news also comes in the wake of unbearable sadness, as earlier in the year Meghan announced that she had experienced a miscarriage in a New York Times Opinion piece. However, the two said they are excited and “extremely grateful” for the pregnancy, and the chance to have a daughter.

“What more could you ask for?” Harry said.

We’re going to be hearing more from Meghan than Prince Harry in the interview, but they’ve already revealed one big piece of information their second child will be a girl.

The world also now knows that someone in the Palace wondered how dark Archie’s skin would be.

Archie is the couple’s first child.

Meghan also said she was stunned when she was told Archie would not be a prince and would not receive security from the palace.

“They didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what the gender would be, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security,” she said.

The duchess also revealed how miserable she was during her brief time as a royal.

Here’s how CBS described the interview:

“Winfrey will speak with Meghan covering everything from stepping into life as a royal, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work, to how she is handling life under intense public pressure.

Well, never fear: Going where the audience is, CBS announced Tuesday that it will rebroadcast the two-hour event again Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific.

It’s a chance to hear Prince Harry talk about his desire to keep his wife and son safe, and to watch Meghan as she says that she “just didnt want to be alive anymore” amid the onslaught of constant criticism and racist and sexist remarks from British tabloids and online trolls.

Of course, the mystery of who the royal family racist is will be a little less challenging, as Harry already clarified Monday that neither his grandmother nor his grandfather had “concerns” about what color little Archie’s skin might be.

Impatient? Go to CBS.com, where you can see the interview, with commercials, at any time.

“Oprah With Meghan and Harry” was seen by more than 17 million people when it aired in the U.S., making it the top-rated entertainment special in the current 2020-21 season.

It has since garnered more than 49 million viewers worldwide, the network said. Britain’s ITV reported an audience of 12.4 million when it aired the interview Monday night in the U.K., which has one-fifth the population of the U.S.

    What Happened During The Interview

During the two-hour sit-down, Meghan and Harry spoke at length about their experience as working members of the royal family, in which race, mental health, and many more issues were raised. They also discussed the harsh treatment they faced not only by the British tabloids but from members of ‘The Firm’ itself.

Among the most shocking allegations was that there were concerns and conversations about how dark their child’s skin might be from an unknown member of the family. Meghan went on to claim “They were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security.”

Meghan also revealed that during her time as a working royal, she experienced suicidal thoughts and sought help from palace HR, but was ignored.

“I was told that I couldn’t , that it wouldn’t be good for the institution,” Meghan told Oprah.
