You Cant Ever Go Wrong With A Tailored Button

Your virtual interview might not call for a super formal outfit, especially if youre interviewing for grad school. Feel free to go as formal as you wantbut depending on the program , you might be able to wear something on the smart casual end of the interview outfit spectrum!

For this outfit, I grabbed a tailored button-down shirt and half-tucked it into a pair of dark wash demi-boot jeans . The key to this outfit is the tailored top. Oversized boyfriend-style tops are in style right now but arent quite the right look for a virtual interview. If your shirts sleeves are fitted enough, you could also throw on a third piece, like a blazer, in a pinch!

My navy kitty flats make me so happy, which would positively affect my mood for the interview. And since the striped top has plenty of interest, I kept my earrings simple and stuck with studs.

Which of these three virtual interview outfits is more your style? If you have any more questions about or suggestions for what to wear for a Zoom interview, drop em in the comments!

Think About Color And Contrast

During a job interview, you want to stand out in all the right ways. Rosenfeld said that a great place to start is by matching the color of your eyes.

If you can repeat that on your body, whether it is a top, a blouse, a shirt, an appropriate piece of knitwear, it can be piecesthats a wonderful opportunity to amplify the authenticity of a person, said Rosenfeld. Eyes to me are always the window of the soul.

Skin coloring, makeup, hair, outfit, accessories, and background should all be working together in medium contrast, according to Rosenfeld.

For example, a woman with light hair and white skin may want to avoid white walls, or else shell blend into the background. However, shell also want to avoid too much contrastsuch as black walls and black sweaters against a white backgroundor the effect might be bobble-head syndrome, where the head almost looks as if its floating in space. Someone with darker skin already has the advantage of contrast against a white wall.

Why Is What You Wear To A Job Interview Important

According to one survey of hiring managers, 95% consider a job applicants interview attire to reflect their professionalism. So, even if you have a first-rate CV and referees, that might not be enough to win a job if you make poor interview outfit choice.

Rightly or wrongly, the hiring manager you interview with might interpret your interview attire as a signal that you arent as serious about the vacant job as you need to be to succeed in the role.

The professional attire you choose to wear for an interview can also influence how the hiring manager judges your alignment with the cultural norms of the business. An interviewer will consider the clothes you wear to be representative of the professional image youre likely to emit to your prospective employers clients, stakeholders and other employees.

Also consider evidence that illustrates that people tend to adopt the personas associated with the clothes they wear.

Our advice is that, if you want to project confidence and make a good first impression at a job interview, dress for success.

Research The Company Vibe

Before any interview, youâll want to research the company and the specific position for which youâve applied. At the same time, try to glean some information about their employee dress code. The old adage is that itâs better to be overdressed than underdressed, and in most cases, thatâs true. But showing up to a virtual interview in a suit when the other attendees are wearing T-shirts might feel awkward â and it might appear that you didnât bother to learn about the company culture. Knowing whether you should aim for informal, business casual, or formal business attire will help you determine specific clothing choices.

Be Smart With Accessories

How to Nail Your Virtual Interview

Accessories: The icing on the cake. While we love actual cake, we recommend a âless is moreâ approach when it comes to accessorizing for a virtual interview. Scarves are a great way to add depth to your look but try to avoid bulky fabrics or busy patterns. Keep jewelry subtle and distraction-free the interviewer should be focused on all the amazing things youâre saying, not on jingling bangle bracelets. If youâre a habitual hair twirler or are in between a bangs grow-out, you might want to consider an interview-style that will keep your hair away from your face. Again, clearing these small distractions will help all parties stay focused on whatâs important.

Wear Glasses But Adjust The Glare

It is not quite in the “what to wear” section but this is amongst one of the important Dos for a video interview. Candidates who wear glasses do not adjust the lighting in the room before going live which tends to spark a glare across the screen. Since you are talking with a window screen in the middle, you need to keep in mind this situation. You must keep the light source either above the head, or facing you, warm and soft, to avoid your glasses reflecting the light. Eye contact and eye movement is a very important non-verbal part of communication, so don’t leave them guessing about where your eyes are during the interview.

Ask About Dress Codes

Youve tried all your investigative techniques, but youre still left shrugging about the right thing to wear. Your next step? Why not just flat-out ask someone?

Dont be shy. Youd rather ask and look your best than guess wrong and feel embarrassed.

Of course, you want to show some subtlety. You dont want to send an email with the subject line What Should I Wear For My Interview? Instead, ask about the companys overall dress code. Your contact at the company will likely take the hint. Even if they dont, you can use the information you receive on general clothing guidelines to inform your selection.

How To Dress For A Zoom Job Interview

With more companies conducting job interviews over Zoom and other video platforms, choosing an outfit has become a whole new ballgame. What looks good in person may look like a sloppy nightmare in video calls. Job seekers are learning how to style themselves from scratch.

Joseph Rosenfeld is a personal stylist and corporate image consultant who has seen his clients struggle over what to wear in the digital atmosphere.

Its not just about how you want your clothes to show up on Zoom, although that is a part of it, Rosenfeld said. Its more of a story about your overall presence. Visuals are really important. Thats the prism through which everyone is going to receive your communication. On Zoom, you have just a little bit of real estate to do it.

What you wear is just one factor. Here are a few additional tips to help you ace a remote interview:

  • Prep for the tech part. Download any applications you need for the interview beforehand, and test your speakers and microphone the day before. You can test it out again the morning of your interview, too.
  • Show up early. Always join the call about five minutes early so the hiring manager isnt sitting there waiting for you, Heinrich said. This also gives you an opportunity to troubleshoot if you wind up with unexpected technical difficulties.
  • Do your normal interview prep. Youll be at a disadvantage if your interview preparation is only choosing an outfit and not researching the company and role. Your outfit will not get you hired, but your industry knowledge and skills will, Etkina said.

For A Virtual Interview At Big Four What Is The Appropriate Attire To Wear

I would go business professional if its an interview. So suit and tie would be my suggestion.

I had suit but the partner who interviewed me is in hoodies lol

dress shirt

Not a suit and tie?

I was in the nude.

Well I got the job strictly based on how I looked naked. So worked out very well.

I would err on the side of a dress shirt or collared polo shirt. If you want to wear a jacket I would say it is optional. Most of the time when I am interviewing folks I am usually still in my PJs but I put on a 3/4 zip company fleece with logo. It looks very generic on the screen. I look less at what the candidate is wearing, rather I look at whether they are sitting in a disorganized mess. Make sure you are in a well lit area free from distractions behind you. Stage your background to look professional. If you can, set up in front of a window so you have lots of natural light on your face or invest in a ring light. Do a test run with a friend to adjust your microphone, camera and lighting. my major pet peeve is when I am interviewing someone and their camera is so low it looks like I am looking up their nose.

At least a day before your virtual interview, check all of your technology to ensure it works effectively and can be used to communicate effectively. That means having a functional computer that meets technical specifications, downloading any necessary software and ensuring the connection is strong enough to sustain streaming video.

In the 15 to 30 minutes before your interview, check your internet connection and sign in to the video or phone meeting provided by the HR representative or hiring manager. Turn on the sound and video to ensure everything is in working order in time for your conversation.

Should you dress up for your virtual interview? To ace the process, should you break out your blazer, your tie, or your pencil skirt? Or stick with the pajama pants and Black Keys t-shirt that has made up the wardrobe for most of your other Zoom meetings?
